Wishlist, Inventory & pending pages to be improved

Next on my major todo list is to redo the wishlist, inventory and pending pages.

The main reasons for working on them are:

- over the past 4 years, all these pages have accumulated more and buttons and functionality. They're cluttered.

- the ability to sort books by author/title/date-added is frequently requested

- large numbers of books occur frequently on these pages, and it can be tedious to handle them with the current way things work.

--

I developed a new kind of "table view" for BookMooch for the forums section. You can see it on this page:
http://bookmooch.com/m/forums_all

This "table view" allows:
1) easy re-sorting
2) filtering the view with a drop-down menu
3) using the drop-down menu as a replacement for navigation buttons (thereby reducing clutter)

My intent is to use the technology behind the "all forums" page on the wishlists, inventory and pending pages.

I'd love to have any feedback you have on this idea, and any things you like, dislike or want to see changed or added to how the table view works.

On the pending page, my intent is:

1) to separate the "you are receiving" things from the "you need to
send" things, moving them onto separate pages. It'll be another click, but it will keep things tidier.

2) to remove most of the details about each pending item from the overview page. Instead, you click on the book title on the table, and a new page appears with all the mooch transaction details. This should make the overview easier to read, to show more pending items (and let you sort by recipient, author name, or whatever) and allows me to show all the pending details rather than somewhat arbitrarily hiding some of the details.

I'd also love to hear any suggestions about other improvements to how these pages could change. I'll be working on the wishlist page first, because that's the easiest.

I'd love to be able to easily identify moochers who don't ship internationally. I find it very frustrating to agree to ship to someone overseas to then have them turn down a mooch of mine because they won't ship to my country.

Ok, I'm new but here's what I've noticed.

My only wish for wishlist is that I could condense/combine the listings for same title/author that have different ISBN, but I can't see how to do that with the current system. And since I love the rest of the current system.............

For Inventory, can we separate out books that are already promised? It really confused me at first to find books I had promised and packaged still in the inventory. How about an option to "vacation" without having to remove the entire list?

The separation for pending receiving/pending sounds great. The extra click won't bother me at all.

Oh, but what about a way to sort wishlist by category??? That would make it easier for me because of the variety of things I like.

I simply LOVE the "table view": it's much more streamlined and user-friendly. Now that I think about it, another thing I feel a little uncomfortable with is to have both the inventory and the wishlist spreading on multiple pages. I'd like to have the possibility to opt-in a single-page view, if not for my visitors at least for me: it would be cool ^_____^

The idea "to separate the "you are receiving" things from the "you need to send" things, moving them onto separate pages" is wonderful, so just keep up the good work!

OK - here's my wish-list for changes:

Firstly - I would be exceedingly happy with a table view for everything if I can get the details, for all the stuff I want to be able to find, IN the table...for example if the "books mooched" page (which it doesn't have now) would show in the table the member I have mooched from - as in the 'books given' page details that does show this now - if you make it possible to customise - as mentioned - that would possibly appease everyone. As long as it has all the options available to be viewed. :)

Secondly - as suggested before, here and on other forums, a place to write notes within a mooch request; be it either yours or one someone is requesting from you, then that would be most helpful - as in it is an angel-mooch and who it is for etc; or a copy of the email I sent to this person - copies of emails sent would be good to have somewhere!

Thirdly - the ability to delete, or edit, in multiples, to save a huge amount of clicking.

I, personally, would be very happy to have pending broken down into 'give' and 'get' pages but I understand if others do not - it depends on the length of these. I usually have a lot of 'sent' pending due to shipping times.

The other option I would love is the ability to see condition notes on mooches I need to get help obtaining WITHOUT trawling through long inventory lists - I don't seem to be able to get the 'search this inventory' to work in showing me the condition of the book quickly BEFORE I ask for angel help, and speed is often of the essence here.

I am not sure how you could deal with very, very long inventory / wish-lists but I find the 'next page' and the 'all' tabs not as efficient as I'd like - and I have a fast speed download, so it must be horrendous otherwise.

And, as always, I'm very grateful for all your work - should I ask for the pony here too? LOL!
:) :) :)

Yes, I second Lyn's comments.
Note to self field for each book's listing in the pending page (mostly to be used for angel-ing) & copies of emails sent within the system to be sent to the sender, as a record of what was offered or promised to the moocher.
& I like the idea of separate GIVE & GET pages.

Thanks John.

Now that we can tell how long it's been since we sent a reminder (thanks for that, BTW), it would be really great if we could tell how long it had been since we accepted a mooch. Many of us aren't in a situation to send books right after we agree to send them, and currently there's no way to tell which requests are oldest.
Carol

Since I periodically glean the list and often list many editions of the same book, would it be possible to remove title more than one at a time?
Ed Hahn

I would love to have the wishlist be easier to edit, like in multiples, as one person above put it. I love the unlimited wishlist, but editing it one at a time is too time-consuming. My wishlist has many items I would like to remove now but I just don't have time to fix it when each item deletion requires a page reload or opening a new window.
Belanna

I'm perfectly happy with the pending page, with everything in one place, but I am probably in the minority.
To Carol: if you hit "details" on the upper right hand corner of the pending page, you will get all the dates.
NinaBryna

Separating out-going and in-going mooches sounds great. :)

I like the "show details" -button as it is now in pending page (and many other pages too). I think its handy to see all the details in one page or few pages. Don´t actually like the idea of going to a separate page for each book to see the details.

Is it possible to include book covers to the table view? The plain table isn´t so visually attractive, at least for me the cover pictures are quite important.

vivir
I like a lot of the ideas all ready given above. I would like to see you retain the "details" button on each of the give/get pages so that I can tell the details for each mooch with a single click. That makes it easier to determine exactly how long the transactions have been pending and other details.

What I would really love to see is a way to sort the indvidual pages based on different criterias. Such as sorting the wishlist so I see only a particular author. Or sorting the pending by the member I am mooching from. I would also love to see the "pending" page be sortable by mooch date. I get frustrated by members that have a lot "pending" mooches but will not take the time to make sure that the books they send out first are the ones that were mooched from them first. Especially when my books have been pending for over a month and the fist book they mail out is one that was mooched less than a week ago!

And while loading the whole inventory/wishlist to view on a single page is nice now, it does get long. And I know my wishlist is no where near as long as some of the wishlists my friends have! The ability to navigate through the page with a "search in page" feature might be nice here. And the ability to link and hide "related" books, i.e. different versions of the same book, would make the wishlist easier to navigate. I would also LOVE to be able to delete multiple books at a time from the wishlist. It does get to be a pain when the same book has 3 or 4 different versions and I need to remove the others once I receive one version.

It would also be nice to be able to have a button where you can easily look at your "friends" wishlists and/or inventories. As I know these friends read the same type of books I do, it often gives me new authors to check out. It's a good bet that if they like them, so will I.

These are at the top of my "wishlist" for improvements. I want to thank you for keeping Bookmooch the best book trading website out there. I am sure the amount of time spent on Bookmooch is tremendous and we all want you to know that we all really appreciate the efforts you go to to keeping the website up to date and constantly improved.

John, if you can fit it into your improvements schedule, could we please have a TBR list. That could then show what TBR books are on another BMer's WL, as a guide for possibly what to read next...

how about being able to sort others members inventory by genre. that would be helpful
shauns
It will be nice that the pending page will be reorganized.
What I missed most was the ability to go quickly to a particular part of the pending page.
In my first days at BookMooch, I really have been searching for a button/link at the top of the page enabling me to move to 'books which have been send' or 'waiting to receive...'

What I would like too, is a checkboxed list of genres, and - as shauns mentioned above - the possibility to sort other members inventory by genre.
I know that the books are sorted according to Amazons liking, but that sorting is not always clear, and I know some members add tags when hand-entering books, but with pre-defined genres it can be (a bit) easier to find for 'still unknown books' in the genres someone likes.

Ann v.Roy
What Shauns said, sorting inventories by genre, would be really helpful. For moochers who like to search inventories to make multi-mooches, especially when somebody is offering a deal and has a huge inventory, this would really help cut down the browsing time invested. When looking through a large inventory for additional books to mooch, it can be hard to slog through pages and pages trying to suss out the titles that might be in an area of interest. The only way of doing that now is either to know every title you are looking for and search them individually, or to try and think of keywords, which won't work if a book on that topic doesn't have any of the keywords in the title and there isn't a description in the listing. A keyword search often comes back with a lot of results that aren't on the topic, eg, if I want to check if they have any books on wolves and I search for wolf and wolves, I am more likely to find novels with metaphorical titles than I am to find the nonfiction types of books I am looking for. But if I could check the nature section or whatever, it would be easier to find books on wolves, and I might find a related book I didn't think to search for too, like one on ecosystems or another interesting animal and so on. If I want a book on war it might be easier to browse the books in someone's history section than to think of every possible keyword that might be in the title of a book on war and search for it, then rule out the non-relevant titles with that same keyword. I imagine this is even harder for people looking for fiction, because you typically couldn't get a list of say, the person's science fiction or historical fiction or international fiction inventory by doing a keyword search for science fiction or historical fiction or international fiction, etc.- that's really unlikely to be in the title, lol.

On a related note it would be super awesome if the topics list where you browse and search in topics could be divided into subtopics. For example, if you are looking for books on a less popular religion, the topic religion & spirituality is kind of broad to just browse in.

Belanna

I totally would love the ability to see topics broken into subtopics! It would make finding the kinds of books I would like to mooch so much easier.

Is there a way to combine multi mooches together? I rarely mooch or send out just one book, and in the current system I have to individually mark them as sent or received. Would it be possible to combine them into a list (maybe with a drop down menu)? that way we could reduce the amount of emails sent too that can be a bit overwhelming if you mooch 12 books at once....
Liz
Hmm...not sure if this is something the system could do automatically or we could individually do, but it's a problem that's popped up in my wishlist. The wishlist is prompting me to mooch a book, but the person who has it won't ship to my country. Is there a way to reject/cancel this without losing my place?
Cereusy

I agree with the Moocher who would like to be able to remove the Mooch button on the WL for a book that is in a foreign language or that the sender will not send to you or that is just in too poor a condition to want. It does however need to be there initially in case we wish to use the Angel network.
Many thanks John.
Great work.

Edited to say - the last letter of the security author is often missing and I have to guess - don't know if that's just me??

All improvements however small are in my opinion exactly that--an improvement , and all the work John does makes our membership with this community a fantastic place to be.
My biggest frustration is browsing for a book, and being thrilled to see that it's listed on someone's inventory, only to have that dashed to discover that the moocher is possibly inactive.I appreciate that not all moochers log on as often as most of us, but I really do think that if a moocher has not logged on for more than 60 days then their account should show "on vacation" and their inventory shown as 0.
I know this has already been brought up several times, but this must be a frustration to most of us. Sometimes the days inactive amounts to many months and occasionally more than a year.To give the inactive moocher an opportunity to re-activate their account, an email should be sent to advise them of the reasons for the action taken.
This could be repeated every couple of months, and then the account closed if no response after 6 months with their accumulated points given to charity. If this were made clear in the terms and conditions, then there would be no reason for complaint from those moochers.
I would be interested to know just what percentage of BM's membership relates to "inactive" members.
Keep up the splendid work John--we all think you are great.

Thank you for the great work you've done for Bookmooch. I've given out many bookmarks to other readers. :)
My main problem is...I'd like the main, large, wishlist to have a tab that list books alphabetically. Then, you could click on the title and have another tab listing the people wanting that book.
I like the current style of searching for books I want by author name, like the way personal wishlists are, and i like the way personal inventories are listed.
Thank you again.

I agree with the list by catagory ie mysteries since I love those the best or author such as John Grisham.

It would also be nice down the line if members could do something like a box o books feature with another member without points. Person A picks x number books from person B. Person B picks x number books from person A. This way we save points or still trade if we are out of points.

As others have mentioned, I would like to be able to mark multiple books sent at once as well as remove several books from the wishlist at once.

I also agree that inactive users should be removed or at least have their inventories hidden.

I would appriciate being able to sort inventory by date added and pending list by date requested. I actually like being able to see all the pending on one page but I'm sure it will be fine the other way too.

I think BookMooch is fantastic. I would appreciate it if you could fix the Greek fonts since book titles that are searched for or e-mails that are written in Greek are illegible.

Also, after 5 months, books can be listed as lost, but what happens if a book comes after those 5 months? Could we have a page for our lost books where we could change their listing from lost to received.

When I search by country, a list of names in alphabetical order is opened. I would like to be able to have an option where a list of only the books in my search show up. Now, I'm forced to open each and every name and see what books each one has in his inventory.

Thanks for the good work, this site has changed my life :-)

Regarding pending changes to the wishlist view. I hope that it will be possible to have seperate filtered views for "entire wishlist," "only wishlist items that are moochable," and "only wishlist items that are moochable and in the same country." I spend TONS of time going down my wishlist and clicking each book that has a number of copies next to it, and then maintaining these lists in a separate text file offline. So if these filtered views were available it would be GREAT! Thanks!

I'd love to be able to see the timeframe given when a mooch has been accepted. I've often sifted through my emails to see when a moocher said they would mail before sending a reminder, so I would love to be able to see that on the pending page.

Thank you for the pending improvements.

For those of us with larger inventories, I would love to see a column where we could list where our books are to make it easy to locate to mail. For example, I have books in boxes labeled 1-13 (adding more tomorrow). I have printed out the list from your site, but (1) the font is WAY TOO SMALL for those wearing bifocals, LOL and (2) no place to note where the books are stored. It would be great if this was a column where we could add our own notes (box 1, box 3, etc.) and save the notes.

A feature that I would like to be implemented on the inventory-pages (and it shouldn't be too difficult with a table-layout) is the possibility to sort according to the languages the books are published in...

Members from a country with another primary language have often a 'mixed' inventory, with books in English and in (an)other language(s). (I have English, Dutch and German books, and could add some French.)

Since English books are most asked for, they rapidly move from the inventory, and the few remaining ones don't 'stand out' in those mixed inventories and are difficult to find.
(When you brows an inventory with 100+ books, most of them in, let's say, Finish or Italian, the three English books are maybe just books that might interest you, but after seeing one page with only books in a language you don't know, you'll leave that inventory without finding that gem that would be so precious to you!)

> I, personally, would be very happy to have pending broken down into 'give' and 'get' pages but I understand if others do not - it depends on the length of these. I usually have a lot of 'sent' pending due to shipping times.

John, Lman's wish points out an even more obvious way to declutter the "pending" page: Have a separate page for the "already in the mail" items. I for one don't like the jolt I get when I momentarily think I forgot to send an item when I scroll too far down the page.

Leela4

I think that many of us have large wishlists that we would like to delete items from but don't have the time that it takes to do so one at a time. It would help so much to be able to make changes to more than one item at a time.

Thanks for your hard work and improvements! I have one request on improvements - I realize others have said this doesn't bother them or it is actually helpful, but we could maybe have an option to display/not display books available but reserved for another or from someone not willing to send to my country? I get excited when I see a copy of a book on my wishlist is available only to be disappointed because, more often than not, it's not available because it's reserved for someone else, the person is not willing to send to my country, etc.
Andrea
When I had joined BM only a short time, I found it disappointing too, to see that there were books available that were on my wishlist, only to discover that the owner didn't send abroad.
But soon I discovered the Angel-network.
If books that won't be send to your country aren't shown anymore, the activities of the angel-network will decline soon I think...

So I hope that it will never come to a point that I can't see anymore that a book from my wishlist is available, simply because the present owner won't send it directly to my country.
Maybe some kind of code? 'M' for readily moochable books, 'A' for books that are available, but won't be send internationally ('A' for 'Angel'!)

In response to Ann v. Roy, I can understand why you would want to see such books displayed, but I was thinking maybe we could have an option/setting on our wishlist to display (or not display) books that fall under won't send/reserved for someone else/etc.?
Andrea
Sorry to be a serial commenter on the topic, but most often when I click "mooch" and the book isn't available, it is because it has been reserved for someone else. The option to only display the book when it is truly available (i.e., not reserved for someone else) means I won't have to continually click on it to check and see if it is no longer reserved and therefore truly available now - it would simply show up as available on my wishlist once it is no longer reserved!
Andrea
Love the table view. Thank you for considering making that the view for other pages. It would be even more wonderful if we could take bulk actions on the page, for instance if we could remove items from our wishlists and inventories by clicking a box beside items that should be removed.

Another superduper features would be to sort by availability. As someone said above, there are a number of books listed as available that I can't request (not to my country, acct has been on vacation for a year, etc.) and at least seeing all the ones that have availability together would allow me to not get my hopes up as I scan through the list... I could see "oh yeah, that's the ones that..." in a birds eye view.

Do we really need to see the Amazon button on the wishlist page? I see the benefit of the individual book pages, but not the wishlist overview page.

--
Not related to the new table view, I echo others who have said there should be a way to stop seeing the people who've been inactive for ions. And When someone mooches a book then cancels, is there no way the system could stop showing that as a transaction on the book page? I've been confused a few times when the book wasn't sent but the page still shows it was so it looks like I've had 2 copies of the book...

Thank you so much for your dedication to this site. It's amazing and inspiring.

I am still on dial up, so anything to keep from sitting for five minutes waiting for pages to load would be helpful. It gets really tiresome waiting and waiting and waiting! So the way it is now with as few pictures as possible, is wonderful. I also like the ability to either go through the pages or click, ALL, and just go through the entire list without a lot of waiting for pages to load. To me the pending page the way it is, is no problem, accept for the pictures of the books take so long to load. Again less clicking and less loading equals less time spent waiting. I only wish that there were an option to turn off the pictures so the load time of the pending page would be quicker.

Thanx, Carson

Thank you, John. I really appreciate all your hard work that makes BookMooch.com possible.

My suggestion: Allow adding "All Editions" of a book to one's wishlist. There are so many versions of books nowadays (hard cover, large print etc), but I believe many users, like myself, don't really mind the version as long as we get the book.

Thanks and regards,
Felicia.

When I enter a title on wishlist , edition is often important to me. I would like to specify that I want only a hardback edition. Or , could indicate that a paperback copy is wanted.I have attempted to do this but have had mooches offered which do not match my wants.

Could you add a subcategory for children's books "picture books".?

I actually like the way the pending/to receive page looks now--it's easy to use and cute. I doubt anyone has so many transactions at one time that they wouldn't fit on one page.

The wishlist page could be improved so that one wouldn't need to click through so many pages to see books, so I like the look of the table there.

Thanks for your hard work on the site!

Since you asked...
I think the pending page is fine...I would not want a separate page. I do agree that having all the details is not necessary. All I care about on the pending page is that my first click into the "pending" part of the web site shows me books that I have to send an the name and address to which I have to send them, and mooch requests that I have to respond to. IMO those two items should be on the first pending page.

I wish the save for later page was easier to access. I spend a lot more time on there than I do on my wish list page -- I only move things to the wish list page after they've been on my save for later for a while, so I rarely want to access my wish list page without first going to my save for later page. But as it is now I always have to go to the wish list first.

I wish the mooch history pages were sortable by moocher/giver and also by author or title. When I want to remooch a book, I like to find the original mooch transaction and then just click "give" to list it. It's hard to do right now.

I wish my wish list page did not show books available when they are only available from other countries.

I wish the wish list page did not show books available (for months at a time...) and then give me this message when I click to mooch it: "Sorry, this book is no longer available because another member got to it before you did. Or, if in another country it may not be available due to the owner's inability to afford international postage. If in your own country, it has most likely been reserved by an international member who got to the book first and has placed a hold on it awaiting approval to mooch it from the owner."

I wish all web sites asked their users for comments and actually listened to them the way John does!

In answer to your doubts...I have three pages of pending at the moment - I've seen many, many more; many more!!!
It depends on each individual's activity but more on their location and shipping times - I have both: lots on the go and long shipping times - hence pages and pages of pending. If I hit the 'show' details' on my 'sent' it becomes closer to 5 pages!!!!
Hence the preference for customising pages into 'give' and 'get' by some of us.

I recently had a book on my wishlist. I mooched it. I marked it received but it never left my wishlist. Is this not automatic? I just manually removed it from the wishlist. Can this be made automatic? When you receive an email saying the book is available and then you mooch it once you mark it received can it be taken off your wishlist?

I think the idea of a "category" option on the wishlist page is a good idea. Also-I like to read a lot of books by the same authors. And it's kind of time to comsuming to have to manually add a bunch of books by one author, one at a time. It would be nice to have is a way to automatically add any books by any one particular author would by nice. And then you could select or deselect any books you already have by that author to not be added to your wishlist.

I just looked at the changed page on my wishlist and it looks like it can be sorted alphabetically by title or author's first? name? Rather odd option for sorting I think. I just viewed the inventory page. I have to say im not too happy with it. I liked how you could view ALL of the book details together, not having to click on the title and then seeing it. Is there anyway for you to change it back? The new way is just too time consuming and i think moochers will be put of by it, since i was. Thanks!

I hate to seem ungrateful,I love bookmooch, but I am not happy with the new inventory & wish list formats. As an old lady, I am naturally conservative, but this new format seems more cluttered and harder on the eyes. Also, could the alphabetisation of the titles bypass the definite and indefinite articles at the beginning of the title? And I believe others have mentioned that one would prefer authors to be alphabetised by family names, please.
Relax, John. Rest on your laurels and don't confuse old ladies.

I love the ability to sort by "count" so books that are available are at the top. I love the ability to easily hide related editions that you don't want. I do find that it loads quite slowly, and I miss the pretty colours;)

I love the fact that you are still always trying to improve Bookmooch for us, thanks for all you do!

I love all of the improvements that you do, but here is my improvement wish. On the pending page--I sometimes order/accept more than 1 book from the same person and I know I'm not the only one. I have been known to order as many as 10 books from 1 person and have shipped as many as 20 to one person. Well, my wish is when we go to receive/accept/ship, isn't there a way to make it so that we can group it and click one button? I hope this is something that can be considered.

Thanks for all the hard work, John. I don't know if I've missed something somewhere, but is it possible to see what I have in the "ask me first'" category, (as moocher) as I am sometimes inclined to mistakenly request a book twice whilst waiting for the response! If not, perhaps you can add it to your ever expanding list of things to consider.

Uh. did these changes affect the "clear inventory" option?
I selected to delete all books from my inventory a few weeks ago (I could not send off anymore), and apparently they've popped back up. I now have two books I am supposed to send, that I cant for a long while.
and yes, I did check afterwards to see if they actually cleared.

these are awesome! Is there a way to see all the related editions that are moochable in the list format? Or do you have to go to each individual one? Thanks!
