Ads are here

After two months of no interest from advertisers, suddenly BookMooch is quite popular with them, with four ads submitted to me this week.

However, with success sometimes comes trouble. One of the advertisers, under the guise of a free Starbucks gift card, was actually trying to get people to sign up for a $9.99 recurring charge on their mobile phone. Apparently a few people got caught by this, and complained to the admins. I'm really sorry about that, and suspended the ad as soon as I heard about it. It ran for a day and a half before being halted. It was my birthday yesterday (42!) and I was (unusually) out all day having fun, which is why the ads didn't get halted within a half day.

Thankfully, unlike with Google advertising, I have the ability to remove any ads with the advertising company I use. I also get same-day rejection rights on ads before they appear on BookMooch. Unfortunately, while I had reviewed the Starbucks ad, I didn't see anything shady with it, and so I let it through -- apparently the shadiness came after the initial signup page. I'm going to be more careful now.

There are three ads currently in rotation, and all look much more like the kind of thing we want on BookMooch. One ad is for a new book from Macmillian, another for a new book from Random House.

Great!

The feedback from my original blog entry "BookMooch Blog" about accepting ads was that people were quite positive about book related ads, and so I'm quite happy to *finally* be getting ads for new books.

The other ad in rotation today is from http://www.50summersteals.com/ which *appears* to me to be legit. However, there's only so much I can tell by looking at a page, so please, if you think that an ad on BookMooch is shady, please email tech support http://bookmooch.com/m/email_support and voice your concern. I have the ability to "pause" an ad while we investigate, which is what I'd do if any ad needs scrutiny from us.

On the positive side, this week's advertising raises $1371 for BookMooch, which goes a long way to paying for the $2000 booth we rented at the American Library Association conference last week.

If you find the ads annoying, you can opt-out of them with a setting at the bottom of your profile:
http://bookmooch.com/m/profile

A few people have complained that the ads appeared again for them even though they opted out. I haven't been able to cause that to happen in my own testing, except if I leave the member section (http://bookmooch.com/m/) and go to the non-member section (without the /m/ on the url), in which case you have left the member area, where BM shows ads all the time. If you do not want to see ads, first opt out of them, and then be sure that you're in the member section (where every page starts with bookmooch.com/m/)

When you use the Recent feed & click on a link, you are thrown onto a non-member page, & there you are - stuck with an ad again.

Maybe I need to go back to using Firefox, so I can block them on my end.

I thought these wouldn't bother me, but I find them quite distracting.

I was getting the strange space at the top yesterday as well in IE and kept getting a message to install Adobe. I think it had something to do with the html of that Starbucks ad. Today, with that ad gone there is no white space and no Adobe requests.

I don't mind the ad's themselves, however, I am finding that they are making the page load funny in IE. There is a huge space at the top of the page the size of the top ad, if that makes any sense.

Are you still having that problem now? I am testing with IE6 and IE8 and don't have that problem.

When you use the Recent feed & click on a link, you are thrown onto a non-member page, & there you are - stuck with an ad again.

I've fixed that, thanks for pointing it out. Now, links on the "Recent books" feed default to logged in, and redirect you to the non-member page only if you hit "cancel" when asked for your name and password. If you're already logged in, everything just works as you'd expect.

Maybe I need to go back to using Firefox, so I can block them on my end.

It is the case that AdBlock on both Firefox and Chrome, effectively removes the ads from BookMooch and from other sites.

I thought these wouldn't bother me, but I find them quite distracting.

In which case I do recommend "opting out" of the ads on BM, and let me know if you find any other cases where you get redirected to the non-member section and the ads show up again.

This is the time for me to plug one of my favorite add-ons for my browser of choice:

Firefox.

The add-on of course is AD-Block Plus. The Ad in question would not have come through no matter what your settings. It didn't for me. I since have fixed my settings, to not allow ads in BM. When I am fully gainfully employed again, I will get back on the "I give a little program".

Unfortunately, I was the one duped by the starbucks ad and then posted the warning. Just to let everyone know that I contacted bm administrator and did receive a quick response. As soon as it happened, I also contacted my cell phone co. I had to wait until the charge appeared and then they did remove the $9.99 charge. I'm glad that this was addressed so quickly and the ad was removed. Thanks.

I can confirm this in FF5.

I use Adblock, and with Adblock turned on I do not see the large white space ( nor the ads) but with Adblock disabled I see the large white space above the links ( and the ads of course)

Happy Birthday to you John!*hands john a bunch of balloons*
Hope you had a great time having some fun and celebrating YOUR day !
Thank you for doing all that you do here on Bookmooch , it truely is a awsome site to have found and I am spreading the word to everyone I talk to about the site (which is just about anyone who will listen )
My son was killed ten months ago in a horrible car accident , he was only 15 and it has really destroyed me in so many ways. The only peace I find is moments in a book and when I found your site it became a "safety zone" if you will for me, so Thank you again for all that you have done and continue to do for this site ((HUG)) Celena

John,

First and foremost, a belated happy birthday to you.

Aside from the scam aspect of the Free Starbucks gift card advertisement, I could not see how that ad was book related; IMO, it should never have qualified to be seen in the first place.

Then, too, I smelled the scam right away. I've never yet seen a high amount gift card like that given away legitimately - that is, without strings attached. I clicked through to their sign-up page, and in the fine print, the word "participation" gave me a second clue that the offer was a scam. Don't worry; I didn't give them any information...

The 50 Summer Steals ad looks legit to me... and it's definitely book related, so I can't disapprove of that one.

One thing that might be helpful is if you could tweak the ads a bit so that we have the option to see graphics in them or not. I prefer to have only text ads, so I'm currently blocking graphics in the ads - first and foremost, the animated graphics have got to go - secondly the static ones.

My reasoning behind the blocking of graphics is that they slow down the page load times... especially when the connection is slow and/or if the ads are new. And, for the curious, I do have DSL... but it's not always what it's cracked up to be. I still get slow connections sometimes.

The bad part about blocking the graphics, is that I have to block them individually, in case there might, in the future, be some ad that might inadvertently be blocked if I chose to block things in bulk.

Please could you make a small programming change so that clicking on an ad opens the ad in a new tab or window, and doesn't take us away from BM. Thanks.

I use Firefox with the Adblock Plus add-on. It automatically blocked the new ads -- the ads did not appear on any BookMooch page. But ads about books are worth seeing, so from the ABP icon I selected "Disable on bookmooch.com" and I can now see the ads (on the Browse, Add, Pending and Member Home pages).

The ads do not appear to cause any page slowdowns for me, and I'm pleased that the ads have been vetted by John and the BookMooch community. BookMooch is the only site whose ads I'm willing to unblock.

I clicked on the Penguin and Macmillan ads, and briefly explored the publishers' sites. Terrific -- more book ideas!

Happy Birthday, John!

Hi and Happy Birthday to you! Just wanted to say thanks for sponsoring a booth at ALA and hope you had a positive experience. I'm a librarian and in these tight budget times we have been using your service to flesh out things that go missing. Sorry I wasn't able to say thanks in person somebody has to stay and run things, but a colleage of mine said she stopped by and relayed my thanks.

Hi John and a belated Penblwydd hapus!
I blocked the ads when the Starbucks one appeared as the flashing was likely to trigger my migraine (my Dad became epileptic so I take care with flashing sites). The ads. now appear momentarily as I log in but once logged in disappear.
If we are back to books only then I will unblock them, as it is quite interesting to see them.

Happy Birthday John!

I have been a member for about 4 years(?) now and just LOVE it! Thank you for all your hard work. I got rid of all my kids beloved baby books (had no more room for them anyway) and loved the idea that I was able to pass them on to other families to enjoy with their little ones. Now I am getting Cliff notes, Shakespeare and other college bound classics for my two high schoolers. Your site has saved me a TON of money. That means a lot since I am a single, recently widowed mom on Social Security trying to make ends meet. To think it all started when a school (how could they?) was THROWING out over 200 sci-fi paperbacks. I couldn't stand to see them go into the trash and felt I HAD to find a home for them. I did a search on how to recycle books and found YOU! I have been in love ever since! Keep up the good work!

I would appreciate it if you could remove the ads being shown on the login page, so that they don't appear to members at all before we're able to log in.

I was never in favor of ads, and am opted out, so it's rather annoying to have one pop up there even briefly.

Something in the ads, which I opted not to see at all but which have been flashing up briefly every time I log in, is throwing me out of my browser again, just in the past hour. It worked fine between 7 and 8 AM MDT, but I've had my browser shut down twice in the last five minutes. Please fix it so the ads appear nowhere at all when I try to log in.

I have a couple of requests.

1. Could you implement a way to limit 'related editions' and 'recommendations' by language? I know there aren't that many books here in languages other than English, but it's still frustrating to see numerous copies of a book I'm looking for that I wouldn't be able to read. Several times I've nearly requested one before I read the full description.

2. When you hide a book in Recommendations or remove one from the Wishlist, I wish it would remember where I was. It's frustrating to have to rescan the list to remember where I was, or try to remember which book I just hid so I can continue searching. This actually should work in someone's inventory as well. When I mooch a book from someone I'd like to go back to the same spot in their inventory so I can continue to check for books I'd like.

3. A minor suggestion, sort of 'would be nice'.....to be able to mark books in someone's inventory temporarily, so I could choose which ones I would prefer to mooch. If someone has 100 books in a genre I like, it's frustrating to mooch one, then find out two pages later they have a book I've needed for ages. I suppose most people wouldn't mind if I mooched 5 or 6 at one time, but I feel like I'm being greedy doing that.

Thanks John, for providing this service. I love BookMooch and recommend it every chance I get. I don't hit the second hand bookstores as much any more but have been thinking that I should take a handful of BookMooch bookmarks next time I go, and place them in random books. :)

@ Sherry Marie
1. Is surely down to people learning or taking the care to list correctly. If the right edition does not exist either I put a big coloured note in the condition notes or I add it manually with the right details.

2. When I want to remove books from my wishlist (often different editions of a book I have mooched) I open the remove book button in a new window by right clicking, remove and close and I'm on the original list which I can refresh or update to give the new info whilst leaving me at the point on the list where I left it!

3. Many people prefer multi-mooches, it saves on postage. If one book is 260g and one 180g then in the UK for internal mail that will go as the same price together as the heavier alone, less packaging, less trips to the PO... People can always say 'No' - try asking!

@ Gill & Mark
Thanks for your response. I really appreciate the suggestions. re:2..I use right click for so many other things but never thought about it for this page. re:3..I almost always mooch two books from everyone for that reason, but as I said, I feel like I'm taking advantage of them if I ask for more. Although I know I sure wouldn't mind if someone did it to me.

1) When I post a book to my inventory I often check the names on the wish list -- most of the time these are people "on vacation" "last entry 2,832 days ago -- possibly inactive (really?!!). OK I'm exaggerating but not by that much. I am opposed to "forcibly vacationing" members for various sins of omission or commission, but there should be a time limit (say a year's silence?)to enable removal of some of the clutter and save us (at least, me) a lot of time.
2)To change the subject, thanks for the tip about right clicking on the WL to get back to the same place.
3) A mild complaint: I live in a non Anglophone country, and most of my mooches are international (@3 points); but no sooner do I re-post a book than one of my countrypersons promptly mooches it (@ 1 point) and, of course, I don't refuse, but my points are slowly shrinking. The fact that local postage has gone up, and is now almost as much as surface mail abroad (our post office has actually lowered postage abroad), is just salt on the wound.

That said, Book Mooch is stillthe only game in town -- I'll just have to post more books.

It is the thing that worries me about BM, that readers in minority countries especially minority language countries are being discouraged from participating in Bookmooch.

You might however think of adding a clause to your status (that people see when they mooch a book from you) asking for your fellow countryment to mooch more than one book at a time, which would at least reduce your postage costs inland marginally.

Perhaps too offering to angel the occasional book from abroad to your country might encourage others to 'import' English-language books as well, and you would be eligible for points from the angel charity.

Like you I think that people should be removed from wishlists after a set time - I'd keep it down to something like three months!- to give the loyal Bookmoochers more of a chance to get the books they want, rather than be 'pipped at the post' by someone who only uses Bookmooch as a way to be notified of and get hard-to-find-on-other-swap-sites books that they then dispose of on those sites!

Thanks for all the good advice. You are always a voice of reason crying in the wilderness. Despite my years with Book Mooch, I don't know all the ins and outs. How does this angel business work. Someone in the U.S. from whom I mooched a book once asked whether he could send, along with the book I had requested, a book for someone in my city. I said OK, and when the books arrived, I just phoned the lady and we met for coffee and I handed the book over. Could you explain the angel business to me?
Thanks again and for agreeing with me on the WL business.
Best wishes from Jerusalem.

@Nina
the best thing is to look it up on the Bookmooch Wiki section on angels, as that gives clear advice and links. You can find a lot by looking at the About tagon your Home Page and then choose the Wiki link. The page you want can also be accessed directly by following this link:
BookMooch_Angel_Network

I am just an inveterate key-puncher and look in all the nooks and crannies for how a site works! Hope it helps, otherwise mail me and I'll do some more research.
The angel charity can be found via the charity link on the home page too, and that should tell you all about what the angel charity was set up for and what it does.

I have a question.....is it possible to set up 2 distinct inventories for 1 account? I have homes in FL and VT and I just can't be taking the books back and forth with me any more. I'm looking for a way to show VT book inventory when I'm residing in VT (most of the summer and during ski season) and show the FL book inventory when I'm in Florida. Any ideas on how I can do this?
Stefani
I know someone who has two accounts that they switch back and forth from when they are in Canada or in the UK. You could open a second account with the gmail or yahoo account. I don't know of any way to have a second inventory on one account. All you could do, I guess is empty your inventory before each switchover (a pain) or put a note in the condition note which books are available which months.
Cara
I actually thought of that - I have a business email address I can use...but the problem will persist. both accts will be active. But I like your idea about a distinguishing note in the condition box. I could identify where the book is against account address (which I do change when I move from house to house). So unless I hear otherwise, I'll probably give it a try. thanks for the idea.
Stefani
@Stefani,
You can put whichever account you are not currently using on vacation while you are not there. Or put in your status message that you are not in the State and any books mooched will not be mailed until after a certain date.
Cara
Hi Stefani, I am mailing you privately but as for notes in the condition box - if you do I suggest using some code like this: before the note and after it in order to make it stand out. That is achieved by putting FONT COLOR = MAGENTA or some other colour like RED, GREEN, CYAN, BLACK, BLUE, instead of MAGENTA between <> before and BLACK instead of MAGENTA etc. after what you want to show up well. I found in years of sending letters to officials, that colour spotting achieved very positive reactions in terms of visibility!

If you are considering having two accounts for this reason, I would strongly suggest you email admin. and inform them of your reasons for doing this and give them details of the accounts.

Considering the time you have already been on Bookmooch there should be no problem, but as additional accounts is something picked up as possibly fraudulent use of Bookmooch you would be advised to inform them of your wish to do this!

tennantfamily

Since I'm getting ready to close up the Vermont house, I'm going with the suggestion of opening a second account for the Florida house. And the Tennant's suggestion about letting admin know about it, is a sound one. thanks to all

I chose not to see the ads. and wish to tell you how grateful I am to you for giving us that option.
Your mention of the library conference booth prompts me to ask whether you would consider doing some sort of promotion for Bookmooch in the other big English-speaking area of the world: Australia & New Zealand. I have been looking at a all the areas represented on Bookmooch and of all the ones currently 'successful' for Bookmoochers it seems to me that the Antipodes are sorely unrepresented numerically.
I do hope there is a possibility that this may be considered in the near future.
