Wishlist bug fixes

There were quite a few comments to the latest wishlist changes. I've made a few more fixes.

The highlights are:

  • you can now show up to 2000 books per page if you want to (up from 500)

  • BM user names in the title are now hyperlinked to their bio page on wishlists, inventory & pending page (this feature will be enabled in a few hours)

  • RSS feeds should now work

  • there is some confusion around the "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:" feature -- this feature should only be enabled by Angel moochers, I don't think it's generally useful for others

  • people with very large wishlists (over 1000), sorting by count, may experience a small sorting bug if their "books per page" is set small (say, 20 books per page). The workaround is to show 100 books-per-page if you have a very large wishlist.

Below, you'll find my replies (in detail) to your comments:

Can you make it so we can see more than 500 books per page? The 1,000 page had been loading fine for me, and now part of my wishlist is being cut off.

Done. You can now choose to display up to 2000 books at a time. If anyone needs to display more than that at a time, please leave a comment.

I would respectfully cast a vote for a quick link next to their name, if possible, as before, from inventory / wish-list page to member's bio page (always good when mooching to see status or global mooching conditions - i.e. they won't actually send to me *heh* quickly!!)

Good suggestion, thanks for that! I've now made the member name linked to their bio, displayed at the top of the inventory, wishlist and pending pages (when you're looking at another member, not for your own pages).

(man) I have the same problem as marmalade though - my save-for-later list, when sorted by author, shows copies for the next book below, when there isn't any. When I sort it by count it shows correctly, but when I sort it back by author it places the 2 on the book below - there is an available edition in between the listing which is correct - and nothing I do corrects this.
and
(from "marmalade) I sorted my "saved for later" page by count & then went to only moochable. The first book shows 15 copies & says that it is "Very Convenient Marriage"

lman and marmalade: you both have the setting enabled for "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:" -- thus the wishlist page will sometimes display a count that is larger than the number of actually moochable books. This is on purpose -- that's exactly what the setting is supposed to do.

I logged into both your accounts myself to test this, and the "count" in wishlist and save-for-later was correct when the setting for "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:" was unchecked, which is the default setting.

Okay, but what if I have a book on my wishlist and I want to move it to my save-for-later? Maybe I'm weird, but I do that a lot. In the old days, there was a button in the wishlist to move a book to the save-for-later (Right? Have I lost my mind?); but now, the only way I could think to do it was to go to the book's page, add it to my save-for-later list, go back into my wishlist, then remove it from my wishlist. Four clicks where there used to only be one. Not as convenient. Similarly, I'm guessing the same would happen for books on our save-for-later lists that we'd like to move to our wishlists.

Unfortunately, this one task that now takes two clicks. You're right, you now need to click on the book, and then choose "move to save-for-later" on the book details page.

I know this is less easy than before, but this is (I believe) an infrequent thing for most people, and previously this meant that every book had a "save-for-later" button on every book, even though they rarely used it. I'm sorry, but that button got sacrificed for simplicity's sake. You can still do what you describe, but it's now an extra click.

ETA: and I can't get my RSS feed from my wish-list to show a heading - it just says 'viewing feed' and then doesn't work.
My RSS wishlist does not seem to be working (when I click on the orange icon). Thanks so much for all your hard work!!!
and
(dova113) I'm having a problem with RSS for my wishlist. When I click on the orange button, I get a blank page with only the heading with subscription option.

I hope that this is fixed for you now. The problem was caused by non-english characters not being accepted "unencoded" by certain RSS readers. Google Chrome quite helpfully gave a "parse error" at exactly the point where the problem was.

(alilee) There seems to be a problem with sorting by count if you have the wishlist on several pages. If I set my wishlist to 20 lines per page and then hit sort by count only one books is shown as available at the top of the first page. A second one is shown as available at the top of the second page. Setting it to show the whole wishlist on one page brings them both up to the top.
and
(carod) Mostly loving all the changes. The only thing I would improve is to have either the sort by "count" or the "show moochable now" show all the available books at the top, not just the ones from that page. I have a big wishlist and have to go page by page to see which ones are available.

If you have a very large wishlist (over 1000), any many of the books have copies available (but not moochable to you) and you have a small page size, then this can happen. This bug only happens when those 3 cases happen. The easiest work-around is to have a larger page size, such as 100, and then this problem won't effect you. This bug is simply a limitation I had to put in place for sorting by Count -- the first internal sorting pass is actually done using the total number of copies (and not moochable copies), because BM needs to be fast in sorting thousands of books, and the approach I took works correctly (and quickly) in almost all cases.

I love it - works great. Now can you make the inventory work like that?

Sorry, I don't understand, I thought the inventory page did now work like the wishlist page? If you want something specific on the inventory page that is currently on the wishlist page, can you tell me specifically what you mean?

Where do I find the "settings" button to increase the number of books shown at one time?

Look at the top right of the Wishlist page, for a pulldown menu that says "### Books" on it. Toward the bottom of that pulldown is the word "Settings" -- choose that.

When I change the settings on "save for later", it ALSO changes settings on "wishlist". I want related editions hidden for "save for later". I do NOT want them hidden for wishlist! They are seperate lists with seperate functions, used for seperate things. PLEASE go back to how it used to be, they should have SEPERATE settings! I really don't mean to sound ungrateful, because I'm VERY VERY happy about the most recent wishlist changes. But I've posted about this multiple times in all the other recent-changes thread and it hasn't even been mentioned, I have no idea if John has even noticed.

I'm sorry, but that's not a bug, it's how I designed it. I didn't think it was user-friendly for most people to have to click "show related editions" on 3 separate pages (inventory/wishlist/save-for-later). My hunch is that for most people, they either like to see related editions or they don't, and they'd like BookMooch to operate in that way.

As a shortcut, you can bookmark (in your web browser) the url that results from your choosing "hide related editions" or "show related editions" for your wishlist/save-for-later, and in the future, you can go to it directly from that bookmark. If you do this: I believe the wishlist and save-for-later will operate the way you specifically want : that's one reason I made the URLs at BM bookmarkable.

I love all the changes...will there be a time when those that are moochable but not to our country will not show up. That is the only thing I can see at this time that I would love. Thanks for all the work you are putting in to making all of us happy

That _is_ how it currently works. If you are being shown books with a "count" more than 1 in your wishlist/save-for-later, and they're NOT moochable, it's because you have chosen to enable the setting for "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:". Please uncheck that setting and the count will accurately reflect books you can actually mooch.

That "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:" setting was put there for Angel moochers, and if you're not doing Angel mooches, it's probably not useful to have it checked.

the changes are wonderful and i am thankful for them! i do have one question/problem that most likely has a simple answer that i am over looking.
maybe someone can answer it for me--- on my wishlist and save-for-later list i have several books that say there are several copies of the book with NO RED MOOCH button next to it, i click on the book and it says there are no books available. on some other books that have a number next to it with NO RED MOOCH button when i click on the book name it says that there are several available copies for mooching. i thought the number indicated the number of books available?

Can you tell me exactly which books on your wishlist and save-for-later lists are behaving in this way?

on my wishlist If I show 2000 books my list on the first page only goes into the 'F's' - Greg Farshtey and the next page starts with Fumi Yoshinaga. Is this a sort issue or a lot of books getting skipped in my list?

That was a bug, and I've fixed it.

My saved for later now shows the counts correctly!!

(but I am an angel moocher (both directions), so I hope the change doesn't hurt that.)

Thanks for all this John, but I still have a wrong count number in my save-for-later list - my wish-list is perfect. Just perfect.
In my save-for-later I have a book Sue Grafton : F Is for Fugitive (Kinsey Millhone) which shows no copies available, which actually has 2 copies I could mooch and the next book below it (excluding the related edition of this first book which sits in between these two on my list and is showing the correct number of copies) Kate Grenville : Dark Places shows 2 copies available to mooch when it has none! And neither has a red mooch beside them.
If I re-sort by 'count' all the numbers are correct and Kate Grenville : Dark Places shows no copies, and Sue Grafton : F Is for Fugitive (Kinsey Millhone) shows 2 copies available as it should, (with still no red mooch button) but when I return to sort 'by author' the numbers are wrong again! :(
Confusing....and a little disconcerting.

ETA: I just tried a sort by 'title' - just to see and now Kate Grenville : Dark Places shows 1 copy to mooch but doesn't have a red mooch button beside it and Sue Grafton : F Is for Fugitive (Kinsey Millhone) shows 2 copies but no mooch button either???

I would also like to add another vote for separate 'mooched' and 'given' lists with the same details as 'given' has at the moment. I know you can see your 'mooched' in a separate page but it does not have all the details you can see as when it follows your 'given' page - as in member, feedback etc

As always thank you ever so much for all your exceedingly hard work of late - it is truly amazing though; just wonderful! :)

The RSS wishlist does work now thanks! (Looks kind of strange with numbers at the beginnings and seems to be showing related editions, thought I hid those, but can live with it.)

The RSS wishlist feeds don't know who is asking for the wishlist, so they don't suppress related editions. They could (and probably should) assume the wishlist is being requested by the person whose wishlist this is, and thus honor the related edition settings. I'll put that on my todo list.

For the time being, if you want an RSS wishlist feed without any related editions, edit the url to just be /wishlist/ and not /wishlist_related/

ie:
bookmooch.com/rss/wishlist_related/en/johnbuckman/
vs
bookmooch.com/rss/wishlist/en/johnbuckman/

re: save-for-later mooch counts.

I think I've fixed that problem. Thanks bookel, for the Snoopy book examples, as those clearly showed the problem and helped me find the cause.

If you still see count mistakes on the save-for-later, please let me know (and give examples)

I believe I've also fixed this now. The Count on your save-for-later now mirrors what you see when you click on the book.

Lman, note that you had "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:" ON for your save-for-later, so you will get Count numbers on your save-for-later that show >0 but which aren't moochable by you. That's how it's supposed to work. I turned "Count all copies, not just moochable copies:" OFF on your account, and after two bug fixes from me (there _were_ problems) the numbers look right now.

Thanks so much John for all your great work. I unfortunately have a wishlist related problem, but may be not related to the wishlist itself.

Under my profile I have the check box for "receive notifications of books on your wishlist" unchecked, but I still receive the emails. I've tried to reset it, in a way, by saving it as checked and then going in a few minutes later and unchecking it and saving it again. I looked into the new wishlist settings page and didn't find anything overriding it there. Is it a bug, or, what is more likely, have I missed something?

I left a message here last week to say that I had a number of books listed on my Wishlist that was lower than the number stated in the box at the top of that page where it tells you the number of books on your Wishlist. This was last week and you said John to give you a week and to let you know if the problem had been sorted. That would have been the end of this week but I noticed today that it said that problems to do with the Wishlists had hopefully been sorted out so I checked. Now I seem to have more books on my Wishlist than the number it says I should have at the top. I just thought I'd let you know. My thanks again for all you do John and I think you'te brilliant for all you do so a big thank you because it is really appreciated by so many people. It's such a lot of work that you put in and you are always so amenable to people's comments. I love the site and would be lost without it.

Thanks for the changes John!

I really like the big red "mooch" next to moochable books, and the ability to filter the list and just see the moochable books. I also like the settings page that allows me to see the wishlist and the save for later just the way I like them, including loading my whole long save for later list with just one click. Great!

Hello John,

I'm relatively new to this site, and I thank you for all the site improvements!

I have a suggestion for the "Count all copies..." option, to make it a little bit more user friendly:

when this option is checked, the count could show two numbers, such as: 1 (3) or 1 of 3, meaning 1 mochable copy, of 3 copies total. this would make it easier to see which books require an angel.

also, for the people who'd like related editions only for their wishlist, perhaps this could be an option in the settings? for example, something like this:
Automatically display related editions...
. for wishlist: { }
. for save-forlater: { }

(by { } I mean a checkbox. I tried brackets but it gave me a magnifying glass!)

thanks again,
hibou

I think I may have found a bug on my Save-for-later list:

When I enabled the "Count all copies..." option, I found two moochable books that had not shown up as moochable when "Count all copies..." was disabled. Both books had users who's international status was "Ask me first." The two books are:
Muriel Barbery : The Elegance of the Hedgehog
Irvine Welsh : Trainspotting (Vintage Classic Promo)

thanks,

John, first of all thank you so much for the time you spend perfecting this website and making things run smoother for us!

One question though - on the old Save-for-later list there used to be a way to move a book to the wishlist but now the only option is to remove and than manually add to the wishlist. Will the move-to-wishlist feature be added back to the save-for-later page in the future or is this a bug and should be there, but is missing on my page?

Thanks!

I often receive emails for related editions not in English. This is not a problem, but the emails arrive in the language of the book, and so are indecipherable to me (unless I know a little of the language). Clicking the links, should I know which is the right one, takes me to the localised version of the BM site, which again, is hard to use. Can we have an option to only receive emails in a certain languague? Even better would be the possibility to only get notifications about books in our chosen language; I suppose this relies on the correct meta-data field being present, so for all I know it might not work. Thanks for all your hard work, John!

My RSS still doesn't work, when I click on the orange button. On Firefox, I get the same blank page as before. Removing '_related' from the link helps, but now none of the books on the RSS have covers displayed, previously some of them had cover images. And the numbers in book titles are a bit confusing and unnecessary.

I also tried loading my WL RSS on Google Chrome, Opera and Konqueror, and they all displayed an XML parsing error page, probably due to some non-english character in one of the related editions. After removing 'related', RSS on Opera works fine; the other two browsers display available books in XML, without related editions. I hope this helps to clear the problem.

Muriel Barbery : The Elegance of the Hedgehog
Irvine Welsh : Trainspotting (Vintage Classic Promo)

Both those examples have zero copies at the moment, which may simply mean that they've been mooched since you posted this message. So, I wasn't able to observe this problem. Let me know if you see it again.

Okay, I tried that, and it DOESN'T WORK. I bookmarked my "save-for-later" with related editions hidden, then shut down that tab. Pulled up the bookmarked-page, and pulled up my wishlist in a seperate tab. The wishlist changed to related editions hidden, even tho I had earlier set it to show them.

Heather, try these URLS:
bookmooch.com/m/wishlist/heather19/sort/0/page/0/related_off/
bookmooch.com/m/wishlist/heather19/sort/0/page/0/related_on/
bookmooch.com/m/savelater/heather19/sort/0/page/0/related_off/
bookmooch.com/m/savelater/heather19/sort/0/page/0/related_on/

these all work for me as I explained.

On another topic, I was wondering if you knew about how ALL CAPS writing is considered bad manners, like shouting at someone aggressively. That's at least how I read messages that SHOUT at me.

Wikipedia says the same thing:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_caps
With the advent of the internet, all caps became closely identified with "shouting" or attention-seeking behaviour. As a result, netiquette generally discourages the use of all caps when posting messages online

About.com has similar advice:
http://email.about.com/od/netiquettetips/qt/Writing-In-All-Caps-Is-Like-Shouting.htm

May I respectfully recommend that you use less capitalization in your messages? I'm not sure you realize the way in which people read your messages.

I hope you'll take this advice in the friendly manner it is meant.

When I tried to use the button on the detail page to move a book from wishlist to save-for-later, it moved to save-for-later, but didn't delete from wishlist.

I tried to do this with my wishlist, and it did work the way it's supposed to. Give it a few more tries and see if you can consistently recreate the problem.

John, I still get the error message for my RSS. I believe it's caused by a Chinese character in the title of an available related edition for one of the books on my WL. If available related editions wouldn't be shown on RSS, this problem would be solved.

Error description from Opera below:

XML parsing failed: syntax error (Line: 8383, Character: 9)

Reparse document as HTML
Error: illegal byte sequence in encoding

Specification:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/#charencoding

8380:
8381:
8382:
8383: 1 T: )\7F\1F: (5) (hCOMICS) (I removed title brackets here, the error is the second character)
8384: 由貴 香織里 : 天使禁猟区 (5) (花とゆめCOMICS)
8385: Tue, 01 Dec 2009 20:10:34 GMT
8386: BM_4592128419

I can see that you've fixed the numbers in the titles, thanks! There are still no book covers though.

BTW, there used to be countries listed beside each member's name, were they removed, or is this just one more problem with my RSS? I'd like to have them back, as this was very useful when I looked for books from same country for angel-mooching.

Though it still opens from the orange icon into wishlist_related rather than just wishlist (which is what my wishlist is set on, with related hidden). Prior to the most recent wishlist update the RSS feed opened into wishlist with no related editions. Is this fixable please?

Yes, I've fixed that now too.

I don't know why I didn't realize it before, but the fix is simple. Here is how it now works:

- If you have "show related editions" ON in your wishlist, then the orange RSS icon will give you an RSS feed _with_ related editions.

- If you have "show related editions" OFF in your wishlist, then the orange RSS icon will give you an RSS feed _without_ related editions.

Doville: I have now managed to get your RSS feed to work.

Chinese/Japanese characters now display correctly in RSS, which was what was causing your problems. It took me 4 hours to make them work correctly, but now they do.

In addition, you can now choose a wishlist RSS feed either with or without related editions. The orange icon gives you the appropriate feed based on what your "show related editions" setting is.

I can't get into my wishlist. It is rather large and I chose the 'show 2,000' option thought my wishlist has around 1,000 and then I chose 'show covers' and now for some reason it won't load the page at all. I tried three times. Now I literally can't get onto the scroll down menu to change it back... because the page doesn't load at all. Which means I can't access my wishlist.

Is there any way to sort out books by hardcover? For example, if I want to look up all available books by Debbie Macomber, then narrow the search to hardcover (I have bad eyesight and hardcovers are easier for me to read). If someone else has asked this already and I just overlooked it please forgive. I would also like to thank you for an awesome site and all your hard work.

The LibraryThing BookMooch discussion had some comments/bugs they discussed. I've made some fixes in response to their comments:

There should be a way to show/unhide previously-hidden individual related-edition Wishlist entries. Right now, if you hide a related-edition entry by mistake, it seems to be hidden forever.

If you remove the main book from your wishlist and re-add it, all the related edition suppressions will be reset. This is how wishlist email notifications work too and this fact is mentioned there. Sorry: this could definitely be clearer.

I wonder if removing the book from your wishlist then adding it back in would fix the issue of having accidentally hidden a related edition?

Yes.

 2. When sorting the Wishlist by Count, it should actually sort it by "Count, then by Author, Title, Added". Right now the sort is unstable - it sorts by Count but then randomly within Count. Random sort results aren't useful. In general, when sorting on any column, all of the other columns should be included in the sort too, to avoid unstable sort results. The order of the secondary sort columns doesn't need to be configurable (just hardcode something reasonable or go from left to right).

You're right, that wasn't useful.

I've changed sorting so that the secondary sort is on the columns from left-to-right (i.e. Author's last name first, then book title)

For example, now if you sort in Descending order on Count, all books with 0 Count will sort by Author's last name, also in Descending order (Z->A).

On the Inventory page dropdown, there are items to ShowMoreDetail / ShowLessDetails (sic).

Whoops, bad grammer. Me fix.

I can't search my save-for-later. Whatever search term I enter, it just turns up the whole list again. Search on the wishlist does work.

Fixed now. Sorry about that.

Does anyone know how to get the 'show more detail' on other people's inventories? I used to be able to sort by the date they had added the books

The pull down menu on inventory is there to do this, but you have to be logged in. The inventory and wishlist views have fewer features available if you're not logged in. The reason for this is that the "show more details" setting is "sticky" and associated with your account, so it doesn't work if you're not logged in.

Sorry, but a problem showed up.

I got an email that a book on my wishlist was available:

CINDY GERARD : Into the Dark

when I went to my wishlist page & refreshed it, there were no mooches available.

When I clicked the dropbox to show "only moochables", it said No Books Found.

The RSS feed has not picked up the book...

But the book is available waiting to be mooched.

(I have another copy of this on its way to me. I haven't received it yet, so I did not remove this edition from my wishlist. I will not be mooching it, but it makes a good example of the problem.)

Yay, now my wishlist is finally sorting by count and then surname of author (instead of first name of author, as it was doing). I'm happy now we can show up to 2000 on the wishlist and I still like to Show All Copies, in case I decide to get someone to Angel one for me, or just BEG the person to consider sending to my country (sometimes this works!) Thank you John for all the hard work. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
And now nothing to do with wishlists. When I search for Austen and refine to My Country, I see 1 copy of Emma but it's in Austria, not Australia.....weird!
Thanks again for everything!

I've noticed that I've been getting email notifications of books related to books my wishlist in circumstances when I haven't expected them. I know that I've selected to opt-in to receiving notifications of related books (through the option in my Edit Account page), but a lot of books in my wishlist are for specific editions and I've gone through and hidden the related books feature for those editions. Even though those related books no longer show on my wishlist, I'm still getting email notifications regarding them.

Is that as the new system is designed?

Into The Dark by Cindy Gerard is now showing on my wishlist, along with two "related editions" for Dilbert books.

Thank you for whatever you did!!!!!!!

Some data on the wishlists and RSS feeds are "cached" for about 30 minutes. This is because they now do a lot more work than they used to, and to keep the server fast, the data is kept. Specifically:

1) RSS feeds are completely cached for 30 minutes
2) your moochable Count for a specific book is cached for 30 minutes

If everyone had wishlists with 10 books on them, this wouldn't be necessary, but with thousands on some wishlists, it was taking a good 20 seconds to load the wishlist each time, which is just too slow.

Hope that makes sense.

What this basically means is that if you're sitting on your wishlist page all day, and refreshing it periodically, it doesn't make sense to refresh it more often than every 30 minutes.

I believe I'm seeing a Wishlist bug.

There is exactly one mooch opportunity (Count = 1) on my 200-book Wishlist, a related edition of "Vault Of The Ages". The book is in my country, the member is active and willing to send; I just haven't mooched it because of its condition. It has been on my Wishlist for a month, so caching shouldn't be an issue.

Here is the bug - when I select "Moochable now" from the dropdown, the moochable-only page shows zero books instead of one book. "Vault Of The Ages" is moochable, but it is not showing on the moochable-only page.

Where do I change my settings for the wishlist?

Luci, to change your Wishlist settings, use the dropdown menu at the top of the Wishlist page. You can change many settings directly from the dropdown. Also, within the dropdown, if you select Settings, it will take you to a separate page where the settings may be changed (some of them are the same settings as the ones in the dropdown).

Happy with changes to wishlist now I have figured out how to do settings. Love the 'count' button bringing moochables to the top to avoid scrolling.

BUT have just found that related editions aren't all rising to the top and so I do still have to scroll down to see if any new books have been listed and as it isn't all on one page it can be fiddly.
Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing something that could fix this?
Thanks for al your hard work, x

I had this bug, without any of the three cases being true (though setting a larger page size did fix it). 286 books on my wishlist, one (related edition) moochable book, page size set to 100 - and clicking on Count (to sort descending) put my one moochable book at the top of the third page (with the rest of the B authors - the book is Tarzan and the Castaways, by Edgar Rice Burroughs (I don't know how to link it)). I have Count all copies checked, if it makes a difference.

I set my page size to 300, and now the book comes to the top of the page. I find it very odd that the authors are sorted descending (all my W authors first!), but that's a minor matter; it seems that it's easier that way, so fine, I can live with it.

I really wish you'd install some kind of bulk edit feature for the wishlist and inventory. I've just spent the last three hours making changes to my wishlist which could have taken TWO MINUTES at most if that feature was available. To make matters worse, I'm only halfway through making the changes, so have another 3 hours to go. I'm so discouraged right now I could cry.
