re: International mooches now 3 points

I have just spent the last 3 months listing books that would normally have been added over a year or more. As a result I have had many Mooches and accrued points that I hope to use for the more expensive Mooches in the future. I will, however, be much more selective as these points are going to be harder to replace once spent.

As I understand it, the reason for the points change was because points inflation was causing people's inventories to become stale, am I right? The resultant points spending spree since the announcement must have gone a fair way to cleaning out a lot of this backlog I'd imagine?? I've certainly send out a number of books that I'd had for a while.

So, my suggestion would be to have an annual 3 month amnesty, during which, we return to the 2:3 ratio and give international Moochers a chance to snap up 'bargains' and for inventories to get a bit of a spring clean.

Would anyone support this idea??

re: A dangerous idea

I think I'd have to vote NO.

1) I think we need the water to settle under the bridge from the recent raft of changes.

2 )If we are expected to pay 3 points per book, these 'Premium' books are going to be vastly overpriced for those of us still trying to be active in BM from overseas.
3 points AND a regular premium - ouch!

4) The addition of Amazon second hand prices, to my mind, is the biggest contibutor to reducing WL books - who is going to list them when reminded that they could get twice as much by selling them elsewhere. I ahve disabled that function but it's available to everyone.

3) In fact I will probably be forced to leave BM once my points dry up. As things now stand I have about 300 points that I have been madly accumulating in the past 2 months.
These will now be like gold dust and reserved for books I really want rather than books from my WL than randomly appear.
After all, who is going to pay 3 points per book for regular (non Premium) books, they'll just wait for a local book to turn up and BM overseas will grind to a halt.
I'm happy to re-list WL books but I'm not prepared to list more than before just to persuade people to Mooch from me.

re: For techies: data feed of book prices

I have Amazon prices set to "Off", they don't affect what I Mooch.
But I do fear that having them available may well make people think twice about adding a title that they could get a reasonable amount for by selling.
In UK, at least, the seller would also make a profit on the postage too - books rarely cost 2.75 pounds to post within UK but that is the amount charged for postage.
I have 1,000+ books on my WL - mostly "Global Reads", but I rarely get an e mail saying books are available - perhaps two per week.
Are all these books being sold off?
Not much use to people who don't live in an "Amazon Zone".

My vote would be not to include this info, I think it reduces books available within BM.

re: Feedback +0.1 no longer

Surely it is a common courtesy to leave feedback for books.
I do not have an issue with this, it's the effect of making overseas mooches so expensive that upsets me.
ALL my mooches will be 50% more expensive when that takes effect and I am distraut by this decision.
I do not believe the quality of books available will improve but the number that I will mooch will certainly drop :(

re: Followup to points discussion

Does it have to be a 3 point charge for books mooched internationally?
How about 2.5 or similar?
The "price" of my books just went up by 50%, that's a huge hike on top of postal increases and in the midst of a recession.

re: Followup to points discussion

I have received 2 Mooches today from UK Moochers - both of whom have empty inventories. I can only assume they are using up their points and then they are off - looks like the rot has set in already.

I'd do the same but I have far too many points to use up as I had been stockpiling points prior to a postal increase here - more fool me!!

I'm sure I have more than enough books to stay dormant for the trial period. As I only send internationally I guess I'll just have to start buying books locally from now on, it won't be any more expensive and at least they will be new.

I am very sad as BookMooch was a very important part of my life for many years.

re: New feature: best price

Amazon Market Place in UK charges 2.75 pounds to post, a book would have to be quite heavy to exceed that in postage.

Also, if you're about to list a desirable book and discover it's going to sell for, say 6 pounds (or dollars), then you'll be tempted not to list it.
My gut feeling is that this will result in a poorer quality of books on BM.

re: Wishlist, Inventory & pending pages to be improved

I agree with the Moocher who would like to be able to remove the Mooch button on the WL for a book that is in a foreign language or that the sender will not send to you or that is just in too poor a condition to want. It does however need to be there initially in case we wish to use the Angel network.
Many thanks John.
Great work.

Edited to say - the last letter of the security author is often missing and I have to guess - don't know if that's just me??
