Status message:
Hi! I like to wait until I have several Mooches ready before making a trip to the post office. It may take me up to 2 weeks to send your book.

If you're a student, researcher, etc., please send me a message if you need the book urgently and I'll see what I can do.

I sadly can't afford to send books abroad right now. I wish I could! If you're willing to do the legwork of lining up an AngelMoocher here in the U.S., I'd be happy to put a book on hold for you. Please get in touch if this is the case.

Thanks!

New to BookMooch? Just want some helpful hints? I've been here for several years, and I find the best way to ship goes something like this:

1) Put a post-it on the book with the recipient's address. This way if the outer packaging gets destroyed and the address is unreadable, the postal workers can still get the book where it's going. Packages DO get lost and/or destroyed in the mail. (Over my lifetime of Mooching/online sales, I would estimate 1 out of every 75 or 100 of my packages doesn't make it to its destination here in the domestic U.S.)

2) Wrap the book in plastic -- a shopping bag, a bubble wrap bag, whatever.

3) Regular envelopes are just fine if the book is in plastic, but bubble envelopes are always nice if you have them available.

4) Media mail is almost always the way to go. (In rare instances -- small books, etc. -- first class may be cheaper.) However, for media mail, only the book can be inside, or the post office may return it. They check! MM for a regular-sized softcover book is just shy of $2.50. If it's a valuable book (rare, large, expensive, beautiful, delicate, etc.), you may want to add Delivery Confirmation and/or insurance. Both services are very cheap. You can always ask your recipient if they're interested in those services. They might even be willing to cover those costs by Smooching you (giving you an extra point) before you send! It never hurts to ask.

Lastly, some general advice for using BookMooch:

* If a book you've requested has been in limbo for months, check the profile & feedback of its owner. If they're "On Vacation," haven't been to the site in months, or have tons of negative feedback, chances are they're never going to send you the book. Cancel your request and get your point(s) back.

* Please don't put limitations on who can Mooch your books or for what purposes. It only leads to ugliness. BM is meant to be a free and open marketplace, based on love of reading and goodwill. The only negative interaction I've ever had here was when someone tried to put unfair restrictions on her inventory. (She told me I couldn't Mooch a book because of my sex. "The book wasn't written for men", according to her. Suffice it to say I now own a copy and it didn't turn to ash in my hands.)

* Which leads me to my final point: If anyone ever hurts you on this site, file a complaint. Customer Service is handled by volunteers, but they're good people and they've been very helpful to me in the past. You'll help keep the community safe and happy for the next Moocher :)
