Bookmooch work arounds?

I seem to have a lot of trouble adding books to my inventory and new books don't show up at all. I've been using the site since 2009 in multiples countries and hate to think of it going away but all things eventually end.

(3 months, 28 days ago)I enjoyed reading your blog post. The topic is interesting, and you presented it in a clear and engaging manner. Fort Lauderdale's Concrete Contractors

(1 year ago)I just added a pile of books and today there are five going out to members. The site is connecting people to books ... I co-listed on another site and only one book was picked up. (this reminds me to delist on the other site!)

(1 year ago)I went from checking the site daily for years, to barely using it. I am unable to add new books to my wishlist and most of the time can't even add moochable books. I usually end up bringing them to Salvation Army now. PLUS, the fact that it is not a secure site makes me extremely leery.

(1 year ago)Thank you for your response. It makes it so much easier to list a book since my books are infrequently listed on the other sites, but I'll do what I have to. I do enjoy trading books here.

(1 year ago)Jwarrencpa-- you cannot search from bookmooch on amazon.com. There is some issue that came up years ago with BM"s access to the amazon.com database-- many suspect that the close alliance of amazon and Paperbackswap is the culprit-- Amazon seems to want to starve BM by refusing access to their database. I had hoped that it would be resolved but it has not, so we have to work within these limitations.

(1 year ago)When I try to search on amazon, I only get foreign websites. Like: amazon.uk, etc. How can I search on amazon.com?
Jwarrencpa
(2 years ago)I've tried it, but it doesn't do much for me. I just tried again with Jing Tsu (Kindom of Characters). I use Safari. Great book so far, but only showed ASIN.

(2 years ago)Have you tried the bookmark feature? It so simple and works. You add a toolbar bookmark (instructions on this site are very clear). Then you search amazon.com for the book (I use ISBN), click the result to get the Amazon page for the book you have (paperback, hardcover etc.), then you click the toolbar bookmark for Bookmooch and a pop-up had "add to inventory" and it's done! Works great for me. Hope this helps!

(2 years ago)Have you found any changes in the search function? It seems to be working better to me, very subtly different, but I don't know if I'm imagining things.

(2 years ago)Original poster here - I've been experiencing the same issues as Asusu and Bint Arab. It's recent books not showing up when searched for either via ISBN or via Amazon. I agree it works ok with older books but not being able to include more recent books is what made me wonder if the site had quietly died.

(2 years ago)Yes, I've had trouble with the book search functions too, whether I am trying to add a book, want to mooch a book, or even just searching for a book that I've just added.

(2 years ago)I can get in, but searching for stuff doesn't work well for me. My wife gave me a Nicolas Sparks book (The Wish) but I can't find it on the site or via amazon. Moochbar just gives the ASIN. Searching directly on amazon (UK or US) via ISBN works. This has happened with several books that seem like they should exist. ISBN-db gives the wrong book (a shorter version of the ISBN). I had to add new books by Nicolas Sparks and Debbie Macomber, which seems odd.

(2 years ago)To try and motivate I have posted this in all fora with a message in the last fortnight: Today is digital detox day - delete redundant websites, mailing lists and remove bookmooch fora that you do not use. The last post here was spammy - so I recommend leaving this one. But of course I would much rather than books were mooched instead. I post here (as there was a post in the last fortnight) to ask about this - how can we deal with this spam and re-invigorate the site? and tried to address the subject of the respective fora. I hope it stimulates some action. I wonder if there are other ways to get people active here? It cannot only be upto John, but he of course has something to do to enable the rest of us...

(2 years ago)I agree, marcus. On a side note, I looked through your wishlist, which is varied and seems to coincide with my own interests. I may have the Levi-Strauss book or Said's Orientalism -- I shall have to search for it -- and if I can find it, would you still be interested in mooching it? If there's anything in my inventory you'd like, please let me know. (You might be interested in "WWZ" since you have a combined interest in epidemiology and science fiction.) I am one of those people you mentioned who will only send to their own country, but your comment has made me re-think that. I have changed my profile to "ask me first" so I may send books outside my country if it's financially practical. The postage rates in the US for domestic mail have gone up recently, and I imagine more rate hikes will come soon. Does it matter if BookMooch is mostly inactive? As long as it is practical for the owner(s) of the site to keep it running, it is a resource that stays in the background until you need it.
Bint Arab
(2 years ago)Still adding, and mooching and sending. But less-the reasons the site is not so active are several. ONE is the costs of postage - I think this is the biggest one. BUT not the only one. There are quite a lot of books I added that I see on people's wishlists - but they do not mooch from me. And quite a lot I would mooch, but people will only send in their own country. Then the site has not been updated in a while - yes it still functions, but some features could be improved upon.

(2 years ago)I'm new to this site and have been giving and mooching since then. I have even been trading books with people who have been inactive for a little while before our interaction, and my point is that members are committed to the BookMooch mission, even if they are not active. This site is accomplishing its purpose as far as I can tell. The forums are inactive; was it also a goal of this site to foster a community? If so, that goal not now accomplished.
Bint Arab
(2 years ago)Working fine here, I added a few things last week. But they were older titles. Would you feel comfortable sharing the titles/ISBNs of a few of the books you had trouble with? Just had 2 mooch requests, so people are still active at least. Sadly all the forums seem to be crickets.

Getting bumped off the site

Has anyone else experienced getting bumped off Mooch and then having to wait days to log in again? The error page says I have tried to log in too many times. But I haven't logged in that day, much less several times.

This has happened to me more times than I can count in the last couple of weeks.

I don't see a pattern in when this happens. All of a sudden, I am dumped on the error page that says I can ask for my password to be mailed to me or I can get my password reset right away. The former works and the latter does not. As noted, I have to wait at minimum overnight to get on again but sometimes longer, it seems.

I worry about the future of mooch. Postage is going up and technical glitches are more frequent.

(2 years ago)Thanks for the email response. My question is really asking if this is common and is it being investigated? I assume this is a software glitch of some kind and can be fixed. At minimum, it would be nice if the immediate password reset were operational.

(2 years ago)Yes, that has happened to me once, about a week ago. I had too many other things to do with the holidays so I just put it aside for a while and then it worked so I didn't get frustrated over it.
