Unmistakable voice of a master reader, revealed through carefully measured doses of insight. My favorite essays in this book include her take on Conrad and the great Russian writers, and the first essay about the shared enjoyment of common reading. The last essay rounds up the book with a discourse on the ethics of writing book reviews, still relevant today.

Woolf wants to establish a community of independent readers that is mindful, appreciative, and exacting, and yet not shackled by philosophies and theories of literature. The elegance of her arguments imparts knowledge that is refreshing for any book lover. They show how book reviews can also have the qualities of humility and compassion. Through her own reading experiences, a reader discovers how to read, guided by one's own common sense.
