I am new to book mooch. I have just received my first request for a book.I dont mind sending it but who pays for the postage. If I have to pay postage for every request I am going to go broke. Can someone explain to me how this works

You, the giver of the book, pay the postage.
That's the principle here.

If international postage is too high for you, you can check a box in your profile that you will only send inside your own country. That is often cheaper than sending abroad. You can also look at the "Angel" concept if you would like to mooch from elsewhere.

Some Bookmooch members with limited funds for postage put a note in their profile that they can only afford to send X books per week/ month, so that moochers are warned it could take some time. You could do that, or put a notice to contact you via Email first.

Brian, as nonameblue said, you have to pay for the books you're asked for. This is compensated for by the fact that the books you ask are paid by the ones to whom you ask them.

I see you're living in Canada (as Cara and I) and I'll admit the shipping costs are almost prohibitive here. I'll advise to send books less often and ask moochers to mooch more than one at a time (so the price/bm point ratio is more acceptable), advising people mooching from you that it may take a while before they get it because of the shipping prices. Another way to save a bit is to send from the US, if you live close to the border or have to get there often. Consider also that shipping a book to the US costs you more or less the same as to Canada, but gives you 3 points instead of one (the opposite is also true). You may also save a bit on envelopes by buying them in bulk or reusing the ones from the books you receive, if they're still in a usable state.

It may seem like you're sending (and spending) a lot in the beginning, but hang in there and, after a while when the sending and receiving starts to balance itself, the experience feels a lot more enjoyable, trust me !

Brian, when mailing within Canada, if the book is under 2 cm thick (some children's books and other small books) you can mail the book as a large letter rather than a parcel which makes it more affordable. Sending a single book anywhere but within your own Province is not economical for one point. You can ask for multiple mooches from other Canadians to help.
