How Do I cancel a mooch if the book gets returned?

Hi Everyone,

I've been on Bookmooch for a while now but this is the first time this has happened. Someone mooched a book from me and I sent it. I just received the book back from the USPS with an RTS sticker that says "Refused, Return to sender." I checked this person's status and they have no points and have not logged into the system for a long enough time period that their account is now 'on vacation.'

I sent the member an email asking if he wanted the book but I've not gotten (and based on his status) don't really think I'll get a response.

Since I got the book back, I wondered if there was a way to cancel the sent mooch? I'm not as concerned about getting the point back (though it would be nice...) but I want to make sure the book off my 'sent' list.

I tried to mark it as "lost" thinking I could put notes in the record indicating the book was returned, but it hasn't been long enough.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks & Happy New Year!

Hi Adam, I am afraid you can't cancel a mooch once it has been marked "sent". Your only options, as I see it, would be to leave it in your pending indefinitely and hope the member eventually resurfaces so you can send it properly or you can mark it lost once enough time has passed. It is an unfortunate situation. You could also inquire with tech support to see if they can do something for you in this rather unusual circumstance.

Thanks Cara!

You pretty much sum up what I thought was the case. It's a bummer...I love mooching. Kind of silly to flit in and flit out, especially if you are an avid reader (I'm voracious :-)!!!!).

I'll go ahead and wait until the 17th and then mark it lost. At this point, since I paid to send it to that person and it was refused, in my mind, they had their chance. I'll re-post it and send to someone who REALLY wants the book.

Happy new Year!

The book is not lost; neither have you lost your point. You received the point when the person mooched the book from you and now you have the book back which you can repost.

The question then is how to remove the transaction from your pending page:
• you could contact tech support as Cara suggested and ask them to remove the transaction but leave your point to which you are entitled since you did mail the book;
• you could mark the book as lost even though it isn't but by doing this you would have an unjustified "lost book" on your record; or
• you could begin the process to "force receive" the book, i.e., send a reminder to the moocher from the pending page and a few weeks later, the "force receive" button will appear and you can mark the book received even though that isn't what happened either.

Thanks for pointing that out. You're absolutely right and I apologize for making that mistake and confusing the issue. I think I wanted to say that of the three available options, the first was the cleanest in that it wouldn't leave an unjustified "lost" on anyone's record.
