BookMooch stubbed its toe

You may have noticed that BookMooch tripped over a bookcase, stubbed its toe, and was out of commission for about 20 hours.

Sorry about that!

(begin tech speak) What actually happened is that the ethernet card on the BookMooch server mysteriously decided to die. Once my helper made his way down to the colocation center and figured out that was the problem, it was a short visit to the computer store to swap it out and now everything's ok. (end tech speak)

So, everyone back to your mooching!

-john

TO THANK MY HELPER

If you'd like to postal mail a "thank you" of some sort to my helper (his name is Richard Houck) please mail it to me at my BookMooch postal address, and I'll send it on to him. He's a lovely guy, and I know he likes Chocolate, Shortbread and Whisky! (grin)

Grateful for your "helper".

Many of us would like to thank the person that you said was your "helper".

How can we send a thank you to that person?

That person deserves thanks.

I had a question....why can't people swap PC games...the boxed ones, like books? I can understand the newer games which require Steam but why not the older ones that had the game and everything needed to play it in the box when you bought it? I know there are stores like Gamestop that sell used games like used books so why not be able to trade them the same way?
Thank you,
Celeste

Have you thought about running a cluster, so this situation doen't happen again ? I guess budget is the big concern here, so it doesn't have to be as powerful as the main server. It could also only be a backup server with the switch having to be maid manually if you can't find someone to set it up.

Recent books will show up in 24h -- the priority for new books goes to people who have those books on their wishlists. That was a policy we all discussed some time ago.

Glitches happen and as long as any issues are short-lived, we will survive. I've given this website out to everyone from those I've met at the half-price books bookstores, to all my friends and family to pretty much everyone I've met in my daily life that likes to read. Thanks for creating this site and taking such good care of all of us!

Have you ever considered including CDs and DVDs for mooching? I have alot of points added up and can't always find books I haven't yet read. It would be nice to be able to use my points for CDs and DVDs also. Maybe something to consider?

This is great news for me. For the first time in 6 years I haven't noticed that BM is down for 20 Hours. I am not addicted to BM anymore! Hurray, I am cured! Thank you.

CDs, DVDs & Computer games have all been discussed before and the reasons given for not including them boil down to just one word, "Piracy"

I wouldn't mind being able to borrow/lend ebooks. Amazon and Nook allows you to lend ebooks for 14 days for most of their ebooks.

If you are in the UK,why don't you take advantage of free bookshops, where you can get 2nd hand (and sometimes brand new) books for nothing? This is not a scam. Details from me: brian.lockett2@btopenworld.com.

Note to Shannon: You might be interested to know that there is, in fact, a place where you can get books for free here in the U.S. The place is called "The Book Thing of Baltimore." It's a warehouse filled with books and you can just go in and take whatever you want. Here is a link to their website: http://www.bookthing.org/. Happy book hunting!

There are many places for second-hand books of great condition around the world and around the USA as well.

One, I found in my travels recently for example is this place near Harrisonburg, VA near I-81:

http://www.gvbookfair.com/

But not the only one. For example, my town has a Volunteer run Bookstore, adjacent to the Public Library, that sell used books (some of them in fantastic shape). I buy many of my books there now. Some of the books I will be putting on Bookmooch soon come from there. Some people read their book once, and then just donate it to us. Others, have a family member pass away and then donate their whole library to us. That is what I am going to do with my 6,000+ books when I die.

Many places also have used book stores. Also, there was an article recently that last year actually saw an uptick in physical book sales.

Look around you, books are everywhere.
