BM was unavailable
Update on Friday I replied to a few of the questions below: click here to read my replies
Update on MondayMy apologies for the delay in getting BookMooch working reliably. I've been working on trying to figure out what was going on, as the problem is elusive. It now looks like perhaps the "ethernet" network card has become unreliable and that's been swapped out for a new one. BM was running fine for a few hours yesterday, and then it disappeared from the Internet, but everything else looked fine. Hopefully I've got the problem nailed down now, but computers being what they are, odds are that I'm deluding myself and there are still gremlins in the system. Let's hope there aren't! If BM becomes unavailable again in the next few hours, don't panic, it's just some annoying technical problem that I'll eventually figure out! -john
BookMooch was unavailable for about 30 hours. The problem was caused by the operating system going "splat" for reasons I haven't yet figured out. So... I had to reinstall the operating system and reconfigure the machine to run BookMooch. Everything looks like it's working fine, and there was no data loss. If you do see something not working right, please post a comment below and I'll get on it right away.
UPDATEThe new operating system isn't working reliably yet, so BM was working fine for 6h, then choked. I think it's just something that's different with the new operating system version, and so the next 24h of BookMooch might continue to have problems as I try various ideas to fix the unreliability. -john

Thank you for letting us know what was up. That didn't happen the last several outages and we were starting to worry... Hoping you will re-address the international mooch point change issue now that 6 months are up. If you plan to keep it, that's fine, but you should at least come on here and say what the effects have been. :)

Some of us users have been keeping fairly detailed statistics on the number of members we've seen leave since the point change... But anyways. Thank you very much for the blogpost!! It's *always* a relief to get an explanation from Admin/Owner after something so serious happens.

Thank you John, from a longtime user and lurker of the forum. A suggestion for future downtime: I think for those of us who compulsively check BM, it's reassuring to hear some updates from you, but since the blog is hosted on BM, it goes down with the whole site. Could you perhaps put up a mirror on a site independent from BM (like wordpress) so that it stays up? Thank you so very for everything!

I just added a book to my Inventory but the author was not added. Weird glitch. (I was worried yesterday's outage was Anonymous practicing!)

Hi John - I don't know if this is a glitch, but I just marked sent for several books that I sent out on Thursday. Two emails were returned to me in my inbox with the explanation that delivery had failed. It might just be a fluke (because I sent out 19 books), but I thought I would give you a heads up. Emily

John, Sorry to hear about this. My own drive crashed a few weeks ago, so I know what it is like! That said, is it possible for you to resurrect your earlier blog so that you might post a quick note when things go down? When everything in on the bookmooch.com site, and that site goes dark, we're in the dark, too. Thanks, Fred

Thanks so much John! I spent the entire day yesterday off and on trying to get on as I had people I needed to contact and did not have their e-mail addresses handy.....and HOPED it was only a problem with BM and NOT with my computer! Thanks again for all the great work you do John in keeping this site going and keeping us informed as soon as you are able to do so. I was going thru BookMooch withdrawal all day!!! - GAIL

John, Is it not possible that Bookmooch is being hacked. Perhaps or perhaps not. I share your frustration when fixes don't work. I, personally am appreciative enough that I can live with the rare outages.

Don't know if possible but since so many requested some kind of news of what's going on when site down came you send out a tweet on BM twitter site? When I was wondering if it was me or the system I went to the twitter site and saw no books had been posted in over a day so I knew it wasn't me and site was down...

We've had a running commentary/freak-out over on LibraryThing about the BookMooch outage. It was pointed out that some of John's messages/updates made it sound like there is only one computer running this entire site. "So... I had to reinstall the operating system and reconfigure the machine to run BookMooch." And such. That's just us misreading things, right? With so many users dependant on BookMooch, I sure hope it's not all hinging on one computer.

Hi John, I have just noticed that the postcode part of my address does not add into the address given when requesting a book.
This is from (just) before the down-time too.
I never had to add it into my address as well as putting it in the section for postcode too.
Is this a change we have to do now?
Note: these were local mooches only so my country was not needed.
~ Lyn
add: in fact I have just noticed it is missing from some of my international delayed requests and is showing in others!

Lman, it's always been that way - I got caught by that when I first joined too! The separate box for postcode is for calculating postage - your postcode also needs to be added below your address in the address box.

Thank you for your hard work in getting Bookmooch back on track, John. A weekend without Bookmooch is like a summer without rain (Gill in wet Wales :-))
|
 |
|
|
| | |
 |
Sophie Houston - that is not true in my experience.
If I look at my pending pages, since the outage, I see some addresses with my postcode and others without!
I have never had to add my postcode into my address in the more than 4 years I have used this site - it has always come up on my address from the separate area (which now says used for calculating postage), where it was designated to put a postcode.
It may not for you; but I am only concerned with my experience, and the fact I have some addresses with my postcode and others now missing indicates to me something has certainly changed.
|
 |
|
|
| | |
 |
|
Hmm - must be a bug, then. I do recall that on the first book I mooched, the book owner pointed out that my postcode was not included in my address details, and I had to go back to my settings and add it after my address - and I have also had to point out to people who have mooched from me that they need to add the postcode twice - but I've never come across a postcode disappearing once properly added! John did say that if anything odd happened following the server problems to contact him, so maybe a tech report is called for.

Thank you so much for your hard work, Jon! I wanted to ditto Kay Webb Harrison's comment above: A Google search for 'bookmooch' results in the first hit worded as:
 | | Sorry, BookMooch is not available bookmooch.com/ Arranges trades of books between people. International. No cost to join. How it works, search available books or wish lists.
|
It's the official BookMooch site entry; it's just titled inaccurately. Caching issue, perhaps? You'd think the search information would have refreshed by now.
|
 |
|
|
| | |
 |

It was very good of you to keep us all informed about the issue. This is especially appreciated because this wasn't done previously and it should now prevent you from getting email queries from everyone too! :-)

From my machine, I can not login using Firefox - the page starts to load, then spins for some long time (many, many minutes at least) displaying the "In a few moments, your browser will redirect you and ask for your Name and Password." page. Chrome works just fine.

Yes, BookMooch runs on one server machine. I don't have a spare machine available, because: - the BookMooch server costs about $10,000 in hardware
- it would be a shame to have that much money in a machine that isn't used and which is depreciating and becoming obsolete
- from a performance standpoint, BM doesn't need a 2nd machine
- it's very unlikely the entire machine would go "splat", rather more likely that one component would break down, which is a lot cheaper to fix
- in this case, it looks like the crash was caused by the network card dying (replacement cost: about $40) .
- I initially thought something was wrong with the operating system, which is why that was replaced, but then it became clear the problem was actually hardware, and that seems to have been the case.

Not to worry. BM seems to have a pretty high percentage of uptime. BTW, like the adverts. I've already responded to/bought a couple. How about reversing this list - Comment and most recent on top? Thanks. Mike

Your pending page loads right up for me, so try clearing out your web browser cache. That generally fixes that sort of weird problem, caused when BM wasn't working right, and the incorrect result was saved in your browser cache. -j

Then John, why is it that on my pending pages, after this latest outage some of my addresses show the postcode and others do not? Something has changed from the original address listing (over 4 years ago) - because I only ever had it in the specified postcode box and it always appeared! It would have been nice to know...
I have added it into my address now, but believe me, I did not have to do that before. Odd. ~ L.
