Library Conference in Puerto Rico
The annual world conference of libraries is being held this August in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I've long thought about having a stand at their annual conference, as some libraries currently use BM both to supplement their catalogs, and to find a good home for books they are discarding. In many ways, BookMooch is a network of home libraries doing a kind of inter-library loan. However, I can't rationalize charging BM for the cost of flying two people from California to Puerto Rico, as well as the accommodation costs. So... I was wondering if there were any Moochers in Puerto Rico who might be interested in working a BookMooch stand at this conference? If so, BM could have a presence at this conference, and try to recruit more libraries into the joys of mooching. The conference has a 80% discounted rate (€1,000) for non-profits, which BM can afford (thanks to those of you who "give a little") The idea would be to explain BookMooch to librarians and talk to them about how they could work with the BM network to stretch their book-buying budgets, and get more value out of their discarded books. -john

There are only four members listed for San Juan PR listed, John, it might be worth contacting them individually. In fact there are only 22 members in total listed for Puerto Rico. Strange that, because it is listed under US, they should be divided into 14 cities, but the 730 Canadians are all lumped together!

Sounds like a wonderful idea both for libraries in terms of acquisitions and BM in for PR. Good luck finding some reps.

Or perhaps some Moochers are spending a month in Puerto Rico and would like to give some hours a day for a week to talk to librarians (and brag about BookMooch) THAT would make it a memorable month!

I'm a US librarian who will be attending IFLA, John, and I suspect I may not be the only librarian BookMoocher attending. Let me know what's involved and I may be able to help out some!

⁄€1,000 is over $1400 USD. How about spending that money on Facebook ads? $1400 would buy a LOT of Facebook ads and would probably bring a lot more users to the site than a library conference in Puerto Rico...

How about a one time donation from bookmoochers? It would be worth it to get more books on bookmooch in the future.

Facebook has ads? Seriously, I use an ad blocker and never see ads on FB.

Facebookis the lowest of the low. Does anybody past the age of 12 look at those ads, other than to erase them?

I consider FB ads to be one step above spam, so I agree with Nina. Besides, the point of networking with librarians is to broaden the inventory and the customer base.

I agree with some other users. Please don't advertise on Facebook. I love to use it but really resent those ads. Thanks for all you do for readers!

Brilliant idea, John! And MH rocks - sounds like you've got at least one rep for the booth, John, although MH's time would be limited due to thier participation at the conference. Hopefully some of the Puerto Rico members can stand in to cover the booth. In Becca's defense, I think the Facebook ad is a great idea - incredible exposure for a nominal cost. In fact, I consulted with another non-profit recently and that was one of the recommendations they took. I personally don't care for ads selling stuff, either, but I appreciate being introduced to organizations like Bookmooch on FB. Good idea, Becca.

If you have a Facebook account (page? whatever), spread (share?) the Book Mooch idea to all your several hundred friends and ask them to spread it. Why waste money to further enrich the already overstuffed founder (I forget his name).

LOL, NinaBryna. I can't ever remember his name, either. That's a great idea, too, to spread the word between friends. I've done that in the past at least once. I've limited my participation on FB, but I'm more than willing to log in and spread the Bookmooch site around once again. Thanks, Nina.

Dear BookMoochers: For what it's worth, another opportunity to promote our collective website is the upcoming American Library Association Annual Conference to be held June 23 thru 28 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. A link to the official website can be found at http://www.alaannual.org/. I know there are several librarians that are members of BookMooch, of which I am one. Unfortunately, budgets being what they are, I will be unable to attend. Whomever is willing and able to go might want to consider taking along one of those kits that have posters, bookmarks and other handouts. The exhibition hall is always swarming with book people: publishers, book sellers, etc., not only librarians. Just a thought. P.S. Many thanks to John for all his hard work and dedication to keeping this site up and running. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, if too often unrecognized.

Just saw the dates in previous post I hadn't read. I would be willing to be there for any or all the days, as needed. The conference center is quite lovely, although the food is on the expensive side. Let me know. Frances

Thanks everyone who volunteered. I've asked Teresa to follow up with those of you who volunteered for Puerto Rico, and she'll also look into the ALA show this coming June. She's helped me before with coordinating trade show stands. Thanks! -john

Waooo... This is great News. I am from Puerto Rico and certainly this would bring more people to Bookmooch. Being that you are coming in August will be great because in May there is a big event for readers here. It is the Festival de la Palabra (Words Festival). I will be finishing my degree in Germany and It is possible I would not be in Puerto Rico at that time but I will put the word out. By the way, please send the press release at postmobius at gmail . com and I will post in my blog-magazine Trance Liquido.
