It'd be really useful if I could see how many people want my books in the inventory view. This way I can tell if no one wants it, so I can remove it from my inv and donate it HAHA.

Korean language support

Korean language support

Whenever there is a book title in Korean, the title will not show. Rather is will say "title in Korean".

Which, by the way is exactly what I would expect from a book published in Korean.

Is it possible to have Korean character support so I can see the book title? I know there aren't that many Korean books here but if we can have Japanese and Chinese character support I don't see why Korean should be an exception.

As my account is set to 'ask first' I get the emails asking me if I am willing to send. It's always struck me that at this point it would be good if you attach a message to the return email, for instance 'have you read the condition notes', 'I may have to delay' etc. It seems a little odd that I say I am willing to send, the requester then mooches and its at this late point that I get to give information that could lead to them cancelling the request which then shows up in the statistics of both accounts. At the moment I'm having to delay some books by a month and I know that some people will not read my bio stating this and the system makes me feel bad by saying yes you can mooch the book, it's mooched, and then I delay for a month. I would prefer to be honest at the outset. I know that I could send an email to the requester but surely a second line of communication when you could do it all in one is a little clumsy?

Dear John,

If it's not a lot of work, will you please move the Wiki link button to the Member Home Page. On the upper right-hand side above the "Name" would be a pretty good location and, if you could somehow highlight it to make it stand out from page features (different shape/size/colour than the other buttons), it would be so much easier to find. It's currently hiding under the Member Home Page "About" button and seems to be especially hard for new members to find -- not to mention us old folks with dodgy memories.

Include BMJournals in "recent" list

BMJournals have hand-entered IDs.
As hand-entered IDs are not included in the "recent" feed, this therefore excludes BMJournals. If software changes could be made so that hand-entered items are included in the "recent" feed, then BMJournals (and other items) would be more visible and possibly more likely to be mooched.

Hi.

I'd love to have a feature that allows you to list an author on the wishlist, so that any books/media by that person are automatically on your wishlist and will generate a notification email if something is added to BookMooch from that author.

Not sure how possible that is, but that would make my life easier.

After making an "ask first" request, it would be nice if a link to the member's inventory would appear on the confirmation page (as it does when you mooch a book) so you can look through the member's inventory to see if there was another book you could request as well. Members often appreciate knowing you will be making a multi-mooch.

"on vacation" currently applies to two different statuses:
(i) an account temporarily suspended by the user because they are leaving BM for a short period: personal absence, unable to send out books, etc.
(ii) an account that is suspended by other people because it is inactive.
There is no current way to differentiate between the two statuses of "on vacation". Could a change please be made so that an account "vacationed" as in (ii) above is shown, for example, as "temporarily suspended or on hold pending reactivation".
Clarification of the "on vacation" status would be helpful to potential moochers, especially since very few people who actually are on vacation update their status text.

I also belong to paperbackswap.com (PBS)and they give you 48 hours to respond when a book on your wishlist is made available. Books are offered to members in order of earliest requests. I am so tired of never getting my requests from BookMooch --- by the time I see the availability msg the book is already gone. I'm guessing a msg is sent to everyone wishing for the same book when it comes available and whoever responds the quickest gets it, making for a lot of disappointed members. Is that really the best way to run this sort of exchange? PBS seems to understand that most of us have lives outside of this club. It also allows you to designate a book on your wishlist as an automatic request so the transaction goes through immediately without your need to manually request it. Because of these and many other effective and efficient features, I use PBS frequently whereas I rarely interact with BookMooch except to respond to an availability msg that ALWAYS disappoints. Which is why I haven't been offering up the rest of my books here. Please get with the program and update this site. I can't be the only one frustrated with the way things work here.

I had several books on my wishlist become available, so I tried to mooch them. My requests were rejected (and that person's account was closed). I checked one of the books that was rejected and it wasnt added back to my wishlist, so I had to add each of them back to it.

Can it be changed so that if your request for a book gets rejected, it gets put back on your wishlist?

Maybe we could get RSS feeds for searches we run frequently? For example, in my case, I am currently in an ongoing search for Sweet Valley books by Francine Pascal. So, if I had a feed that would notify me when someone listed one, it would be very helpful. The only other thing I could do would be to try to add every one to my wishlist, but there are well over 200 different books, not including separate editions. Maybe I'm just lazy but it would be helpful :)

When someone sends a "Will you send to my country" request. It would be automated so if I click YES - the book is mooched, just as a book to my own country is mooched. THAT IS automatically, instead of sending a mail saying that I will send and THEN they must separately mooch.

I am having a problem with Schwan in Germany, where I have accepted I will send, and then no mooch happens. I tried mailing him, but the mails just get rejected by his .gmx account - with a HELO message, which makes me think they are being marked as spam.

THIS may affect other mooches too. After all why would you ask to mooch unless you intended to mooch?

I just searched for German books - there are lots. BUT I want to mooch from my own country. It would be good if the search options could be combined so that I can search for German books from Finland as an option.

Maybe it is there as a function, but I did not see it. An I did not see it AFTER selecting publisher country, to then select book location.

Instead of saying this the blue box below says "WRITE A NEW MESSAGE" - this is not clear. Can the text be changed to something clearer like

"SAVE THIS MESSAGE IN THE .... FORUM" or "POST THIS MESSAGE TO THE ... FORUM" or even "POST"

I would like to see Bookmooch integrated into Good Reads - so that in Good reads I can add the moochable books I have listed thereon when I add them to Bookmooch.com. OR vice-versa.

I would like a feed from Bookmooch to Facebook time line - so an app, like we get with Many selling apps so that moochable books are added to my time line there.

I would like the browse feature to be improved a bit:

1. I have over 400 books listed - when people look at my inventory and they are not MEMBERS it is listed by author, when members there is no way for them to see my inventory by book language - as about half are Finnish this is a pain for people to look through if they don't speak Finnish.

2. Many people have commented about Amazon wrongly categorizing books - there is no Finnish amazon service and so almost all the books that I enter for ISBN or author don't show up and have to be hand added - DataCrow looks also at the ISBN database and so finds many of these non-English language books - can bookmooch not also look there?

3. I have noticed that when I hand enter a book, it sometimes shows the language that I put in the condition notes and SOMETIMES NOT (there is a description box) - when the book is mooched the language then reappeared.

Now no-one complained, but it is possible that they saw the Amazon notes saying ENGLISH and not the condition notes saying FINNISH VERSION when I added a book with Amazon. So the 2 ways of showing are not equivalent.

4. I have hand added books and found that the date only goes back to 1901 - but I have some books from the 19th century I want to add. Can book mooch be fixed so I can add the correct date.

Also some books have no date in them - so adding that is not possible.

I personally find it confusing to know which date I should add for a translated book - or a reprint - but that is just me, I can always put a note!

5. Some books have an ISBN that is 13 and yet Bookmooch hand enter a book will not allow me to enter this. this should be fixed so that I can add these books ISBN.

6. I have added some books - and not seen them mooched. AND then when I searched I saw that the books had people wishlisting them - but these were related editions, but this did not highlight in Bookmooch. SO one book you can see that did this is Jules Verne - Journey to the Centre of the Earth in German - when I first added it, it was on no wishlist, when I searched for it I saw that a German copy of this book is on a wishlist - SO I added that version and they have been notified.
SO the related edition feature is not working as well as it could.

Currently, points are deducted from my account when I send a mooch request, even before the giver has accepted the request. Since some requests are ignored or refused or have to be cancelled for similar reaons, I think it would be better to subtract the points later in the process.

Is it possible that feedback could be arranged a little differently so that it is easy to see how many +1's, 0's and -1's a member has received? I find it quite tedious (not to mention time-consuming) to have to look through pages of feedback if the reliability of a book owner seems to be in question. Ebay uses a great system where a table shows the amount of positive, neutral and negative feedback gained by a member over the last 1, 6 and 12 months. You then have the option to look at more detailed information if you want.

The only reason I ask is that if I find myself in the position of waiting for a book or a reply to a reminder when no delay has been indicated, I look into feedback to see if the member has a 'history'of not sending or keeping people dangling. I can then make a more informed decision about whether to cancel or wait a little longer.

When adding a book, sometimes the ISBN search returns wrong details (repetitions in the title, no author, author written the wrong way...). This makes searches harder, but I have not found a way to edit during or after entering a book to my inventory. Other sites which swap books (and other items) do allow this, so it's possible. (It would also solve the problem of the sometimes wrong categories the books are sorted into).

It would be nice if there would be an email notification for when a member sends a mooch request. Since it's possible to get notifications for wishlists, this should also be possible.

I discovered more by accident that somebody requested one of my books - I had relied on getting an email, but it only showed up on my member page, under pending.

I've looked over the comment section on suggested historical fiction writers and titles. The books listed there represent only the smallest portion of the books posted that would qualify. Why not include the topic for ardent HF fans like me? I'll bet the people who offer historical fiction would be glad of the chance to see their inventory move out via the Bookmooch Browse function...rather than those found in the much harder-to-discover message area.

Not sure if this has been discussed before or not. But I like seeing how other people rate items (like movies for instance.) I'm more likely to watch a movie rated highly on IMDb. As I scan for books, it's the same thing, unless someone is actually talking or reviewing the book, you have no idea about what other people think about it. If the member rating was included in the book info page that might persuade or dissuade from mooching the book.

I have a number of books on my wishlist that I've been notified have become available but when I look the only available copies are overseas. I'm not that desperate in most cases to accept the triple chrge rate for these. I think that it would be great to specify that when setting up the wishlist.

History of books I've sent out and to whom....

Is there a way to locate who you have sent books to in the past. I would like to send them an email for a book I think they might be interested in that I am getting ready to post. It's part of the same series that they ordered....

I know we can search by author and by book name, but how about genre? So I am most interested in 'cozy mysteries' and would be interested in knowing about other books that fit in that genre.

Sorry for bothering everybody with my silly requests. Just thought someone might know how to find the information and wasn't sure how else to find out.... If I should have posted else where, please share that with me as well.

Hi ~~~
This may be getting petty but I mooch a few children's books now and then and I wonder why I have to mooch a point for a book that consists of ten pages and has fewer words than the first page of the first edition hard back of Breathing Lessons that I mooched at the same time for the same number of points. It would be nice if we could mooch kids books for half a point rather than a whole point.

Also, my son wants to know when we will have a "Kids Bookmooch" just for them. He wants to go on and search for books but he keeps coming up with adult books. I told him that it may not be practical to create a kids version of bookmooch but I told him that I would mention it.

The "books that have the most copies available" list appears to be in some kind of random order...

The list would probably best be presented sorted by number of copies. Or better yet, allow us to sort it by number of copies, title etc. as is done on some other pages.

I know this has been discussed a few times since BookMooch went live, but it's becoming extremely frustrating: With the proliferations of e-books*, search results are now quite cluttered with "Kindle Edition" items, which are not possible to either list or mooch (though some seem to have been added to Wishlists).

Shouldn't it be a relatively simple procedure to insert code into BookMooch's operating system that simply ignores "Kindle Edition" (and "Digital" and "Audio Download" and other listings that don't actually point to a physical item)?

I use the GoodReads website a lot and it has a number of great features for book lovers.

They recently terminated their in-house bookswap features and I think that if you were to find a means of linking up with them in that regard it would be beneficial to both site.

I switched to Google Chrome recently, and I am quite happy with it - except I can't get the moochbar to work anymore. No big deal really - I can search by ISBN or open another browser. Still, it would be nice to have the moochbar back.

I love the bookmooch painting by Andrice Arp (on the main page). Would it be possible to sell bookmarks and business cards directly, and to also sell notecards, postcards, bookcovers, stickers, shirts, notepads, etc? I'm would probably not buy anything personally, but its an awesome picture, and that alone could probably sell stuff. Not sure if whatever license/contract allows this, as the painting doesn't appear on her website (http://www.hi-horse.com/aa/portfolio.html).

I just had someone mooch 16 of my books. He had to request each one separately, which added 16 emails to my inbox. I had to accept each one, adding 16 emails to his inbox. When I mail them I'll have to notify him of each one, adding 16 more emails to his inbox. I'm thrilled to get rid of all these books so fast, but there should be a way to do multiple mooches all in one email instead of separately. It's eats up a lot of time for someone who doesn't have much computer time to begin with.

I think the wiki should be changed so that only people who have an account on bookmooch can edit it. It has been attracting lots of spam lately. I sent a message to the wiki administrator but I didn't see any response. I also used the Contact Us link but didn't see any response to that either.

I'd be pleased if all titles of audio books would include "audio" right after the title. Some do now, but not all. It'd make looking through members' inventories for them so much easier. I'm guessing that how the title line appears in lists is somehow dependent on how the Amazon data is set up. Yes, if one opens up the Details section for individual books in an inventory, the info is there, but when I'm looking at someone's list of a couple of hundred books, that's a lot of clicking back and forth, in and out of their list.

This can lead to confusion for newbies, or infrequent users.

I think it would be useful to be able to add a way to browse the wishlisted books only and to be able to see the list of the most wanted books of Bookmooch ... (that way members could easily see wich one of their bokks they should list first as they when they have tons of books to add in their inventory ... as I do ...)

I found a few weeks ago a page that listed the top 100 most wanted books and the top 100 most given books but I can't find that page anymore ... and what I'm looking for is actually a way of browsing the wishlist of all the BM members to see what are the books that are most wanted and most available ...

And it would also be nice to be able to specify the search criterias when browsing the inventory in a way that would allow to see ONLY the books in the wislist and NOT the books that are already available ... and to be able to specify if the books listed in the results must be in a specfic langage ...

One thing that would be nice, is if there was a way that you could put check mark boxes next to books that have been requested/received, so that if you have multiple books going to the same person, it is easier to mark them sent and easier for them to mark them received. For example, today I sent out 20 books to the same person and needless to say, I had to click on 20 seperate links and they will have to do the same thing when it arrives at their house. Another thing that might be nice to have in the forums, is a forum for "Hey I have this title but it is a different ISBN number". If this is already there, can someone please direct me as I have a different ISBN book of Twilight and I noticed that there are alot of people interested in this book.

The wording on the text after you force-receive a book is very misleading, and I think it needs to be changed:

Book received

The book has been marked as sent, and you have been awarded your points for sending it.

Just... what? It doesn't even make sense. The book hasn't been marked "sent", it's been marked "received". And you get your points when the book is mooched, not when it's marked received, so that part shouldn't even be there. It probably confuses the heck out of newbies, wondering what points are being talked about there.

I wish there were a way to refine related editions so that a translated version of the title does not appear as available. It's exciting to receive an e-mail about a long-wishlisted book and disappointing to find that the version available is in a language I don't read.

A related edition should only be related to the specified book, ie different cover, different format, but essentially the same content.

months ago I know there were requests, comments, people doing extra work to help identify inactive members, etc.

Its still a big problem IMHO especially with books you think might get mooched but one has to laboriously go through each account to see if that person really is active or not.

I'm not talking about 45 days "possibly inactive." I'm talking about there are people with over 1000 days "possibly inactive." Multitudes (??Ha hyperbole) with over 365 days possibly inactive.

I have sent mooch requests to a few of these people which has led to putting them on vacation (I think it was) but does that take them off wishlists or make their inventory disappear?

Anyone know?

Anyone know if closed accounts will be taken off? I still see some.

Well, it finally happened - at 127 books shipped, plus 7 going tomorrow and 15 books mooched the spousal unit has said no more shipping until I use some points. Last time this happened, I found a couple after browsing a while - didn't really enjoy them but passed them on to a neighbor. This time there is absolutely nothing I can find that is to my style. I am positive I am not the only person at this same point

Is there some way to offer double/triple/whatever points bonus for books on our wishlists? If not, pretty please?????

It's frustrating to see out-of-date status messages saying, for example "as of September 2009...". If I am really interested in a book from that person, then I have to e-mail them and find out what the current status is, or take a risk and mooch anyway.

I'd like to see a three month limitation on a status message with the message being automatically removed after that time. The BM account holder should be notified say a week before the message expires, giving him/her time to renew it.

Status messages are important and should perhaps be more widely used, but they shouldn't be abused.

Okay so maybe I've become a little snooty, but when I'm searching Ebay and Bookmooch for books, I prefer to get them in hardcover. When I'm searching for a book you have to go through ever listing to find which one is hardcover as most are mass market paperbacks. Just a thought maybe some sort of designation in the search to denote hard cover or paperback?

While it's great to get emails about reservations, I have had continual trouble trying to keep track of reservations that are sent solely through email. I would really appreciate a feature that allowed reservations to be displayed in the Pending tab menu with other current requests. My email account is very passive-aggressive about emails from BookMooch and all too often sends a legitimate email into my junk folder. I've tried fixing the problem and I now check my junk mail regularly, but it can still be a hassle to find all relevant BookMooch emails, especially on a busy day. If reservations showed up in the pending tab, it would be very easy to see what I'd reserved, pending permission, as well as what other members had reserved, pending my permission. I think fewer reservations wouild be forgotten about and lost if they were conveniently displayed with other pending actions. I would greatly appreciate this.

Okay, this one bothers me, and I don't know if it bothers anyone else, but thinking about how BookMoochers usually respond to overzealous reminders, I think it *should* bother people.

When a user clicks the "send" button to mark a book as sent, after the confirmation page you get this:

"If they are taking too long, you can click the "remind" button to email them a reminder. If they still do not confirm receiving your book after the reminder, you can mark the book as received to remove it from your pending page."

To me, that sounds *very* presumptuous, it sounds like clicking "remind" and force-receiving is actually encouraged, which is most definitely *not* the case. I've seen people get reported for clicking force-receive too often, and I know many people jump down user's throats if they are too quick to hit the remind button (I try not to, but it *is* very annoying when you get a reminder to mark a book received when it's been less then a week since sent!).

I think this wording is very misleading and it might actually be the reason many newbies hit that "remind" button so early. I think it would serve BookMooch much better to change the wording, make it clearer that those two buttons are last-resort type of things and not to be used after a short amount of time. Having that type of wording show up *right after clicking send* sends the wrong message, imo.

"If the book hasn't been marked received in a few weeks (remember that international mail can take 2+ months), you can click the "remind" button and send them a reminder. 6 weeks after you hit "remind", you will have the option to "force" the book as received, but please try to communicate with the moocher to establish if the book has actually not been received."

Something like that would be *much* more helpful, I think.

When you request a book, there is a status shown with each request. However, the "will send" info isn't included.

For example, I requested a book today and the owner replied that they could send it in a week. The email I received said "Will send: in a week," so it was totally clear. Unfortunately, my pending page only says "Status: delayed."

Having the "will send" info might help prevent any reminders sent too quickly, or can inform people when the sender hasn't kept their promise.

I've just added some books that have ISBNs are are known to Amazon France if I enter the ISBNs directly into Amazon France's databse. However, the link from BM to an amazon.fr search for those books did not find them. They were, however, known to amazon.co.uk, which is strange, given that the books are in French, published in France...

The data picked up are not complete though, and there's no way of cleaning up the database to add a missing author's name.

This may sound rude or inconsiderate, but it's a problem I've had several times in the past couple of weeks. Somebody will join Bookmooch, list a bunch of books (ones that are highly wishlisted - many people want them). After a few people request them (giving the owner points) they mooch a few books, and then are never seen or heard from again, leaving all the people that mooched from them hanging. Maybe there could be some sort of system in place where new users must successfully give at least one book before they can mooch one? Or they could mooch right away, but the book could be put on hold or something until they have given one? I honestly don't know what else you could do, but it is extremely frustrating to have a pending page full of people who got what they wanted and are gone. :(

Please, please can reservations be changed so that they appear in pending books rather than being sent by email. Many messages seem to go missing - both books reserved by me for someone or books which someone has reserved for me.

The person that the book has been reserved for can then either mooch or say no thanks. If they say no thanks the reservation can be cancelled, leaving the book free for others to mooch.

I'd be happy to see a new feature that would let me navigate faster through my increasingly gigantic wish list - maybe an alphabet at the top of the page that would let me click on, say, M and be taken to the page of books whose authors' last names start with M. Or page numbers, so I could guess that authors starting with M would be about page 15 and be taken there directly, instead of having to page through my whole wish list. Or is there already some way to do this and I just haven't seen it yet?

I would like to see 'Search Wishlists' on the Browse page instead of having to click into my own wishlist, click the dropdown, then find Search Wishlist in that menu. The current way is click clicks (as well as waiting for my long wishlist to load). Under the suggested way with Browse i could go right to the wishlist search.

I would find this feature useful because I like to see who might be wishing for a book before I post it. I like to check BM first for wishers, but if no one here is wishing for it I tend to post on another site to help boost my points there.

Ideally, I would like to be able to see multiple mooches lumped together under their Moocher rather than listed individually. It would make organizing what books to send when and to whom that much easier.

Also, I would like pending mooches to sort into the order the mooch was received. That way you could simply look at your Pending page and see exactly which book should go out next. As it is, I keep a list but it would be nice to have that built into the site.

Maybe we could have multiple send-to addresses - what I mean by that is, different countries. Me and my inventory books live in Canada, but I often visit my cousin in the US (where many of my wishlist books live). I love the idea of Angels - but I'm the kind of person that feels like a nuisance when I am constantly having to request one. It would be far more convenient (and cheaper points-wise) for me to be able to mooch books as a US member and have them sent to her place (in New Hampshire). Any thoughts on this?

It seems to me it would be helpful to be able to put certain authors on my wishlist. Often, I only have one or two books by a particular author, but she has written 15 or 20 of them. Instead of clogging my wishlist with 13 or 18 titles, I'd like to be able to list the author and get an email whenever anything of hers comes up.

It would also be helpful to be able to wishlist a series. Some authors use one name to write several series. That way, I could put the series title on my wishlist, instead of loading it up with all the titles in that series.

This feed would seem to be broken, as a random check shows data for other countries are also 2-3 days old.

When I receive a wishlist notification for a book I may perhaps decide not to mooch immediately, I'd like to have the "move to save for later" option. At present I can mooch or remove from the wishlist.
Wishlists become long; sometimes it's better to wait for a book one doesn't need immediately and leave it for someone else to read - don't mooch.
Sometimes the wishlist notification can make you realise that you don't want that particular book immediately.

Is there any way to get a "note" box added to our pending page per item? I hate to accidentally remind someone about a book that they told me would be late. For example I requested a book from a lady that so going through Chemo right now and then a month later sent a "reminder" notice. If I'd had a place to make a note I won't have bothered her so soon. I get the emails but there is no way to attach a note to a book request.

I've got a couple suggestions that would make my BM experience simpler...

- For the history (i.e. http://bookmooch.com/m/history/USERNAME) I think it would be useful to have an option to see more (or all) of the history on one page. Maybe it could use the "Maximum number of rows per page" setting that the wishlist has.

- For the wishlist and save for later, I'd love to see the option to "Count all copies, not just moochable copies" at the top of the page, rather than on the settings page. That way the users could turn it on and off more easily.

- Also regarding "Count all copies..." I think it would be useful to have more information regarding the copies shown. For example, if 3 copies are available but 2 are not to your country, maybe it could show "1 (of 3)" or something similar, so that the user knows right away what's available. Another idea would be some sort of color code... like "1 ; 2" with 1 in black (moochable) and 2 in gray (not to your country).

I've asked this before, but what the heck. In the Inactive Accounts Clean-up Project the Canadian's helping have been going through the country list alphabetically while the American's, U.K. and French members can go through their lists geographically. This would be more helpful for Canadians than anyone else. Some hapless Bookmoocher in Halifax (Google it) is going to end up mailing me a copy of a Dan Brown or John Grisham that I don't really need for $12 or else having to reject the mooch just so I can wake up the account. If I could just mooch from people in my province and ask people in the other provinces to help it would be much better for everyone. Also, it would be easier finding books in our country that we can mooch and setting up moochmeets, two ways that Bookmooch might be made to work for Canadians. thank you for considering this change.

I don't know if anyone else has this problem.
When I ask someone permission to mooch a book they reply on their email and sometimes it does not match their bookmooch username. I go mooch the book and I don't rememeber who I asked to mooch from. This is a problem for me because I usually like asking a couple of people if they would send the book. And I'm not just talking about the "Ask Me" button, I'm talking about sending emails as well. I could ask the person what the username is but it's troublesome when I'm emailing multiple people.
I think it would be great if bookmooch simply puts the person's username when emails are being sent back and forth so I know who I am talking to!

When you search for a book using the general search feature, there's an option there to show only from your own country. In the wishlist, you can see only moochable books (or all) but you can't see if they are available in your country or internationally. Would it be possible to have the same "my country only" option available to apply to your wishlist? Especially since it's 3 points for international now, it makes it easier on those of us who don't have a lot of points.

This information in a list of available books would also be useful when determining from whom one might mooch if faced with a number of options.

Twice, I have accidentally mooched a book and as soon as I clicked it, I realized I didn't want it (once, I didn't realize I already had it and for some reason it didn't come off my wishlist, and another time I realized too late it was an int'l mooch and I didn't want to spend 2 points on it!) In both cases, I cancelled the mooch within SECONDS of completing the mooch, but the thing that I think is rotten is that the sender is still deducted, just as if they had never sent the book after accepting it (they hadn't even had time to accept it!) I don't think that's fair.

There should be an undo function - maybe if you can cancel within 24 hours, or cancel before people accept the mooch, that the points zero out on both ends and no one is penalized.

I recently met someone on line who is blind. She would like to be part of Bookmooch; however, as she explained to me, she can't because Bookmooch does not have an "audio verification code".

Is this something we could make available for readers who are blind or visually impaired? She sounded very much like someone who has stuff to offer here, but the site is not accessible for her. i understand this site is very much a labor of love but as someone who lives with a disability, I'd like to add a vote toward making this site more available and accessible to all readers.

Can someone comment? She told me she could not even send a message to ask about this without entering a code so i offered to put this forward on her behalf.

There's an amount of books that can't be easily listed or wishlisted.

They're usually comics in french that have "album" (as in "Album de bande dessin�e") as the declared book type, which was probably blanket-banned to facilitate preventing trade of some non-book items, namely CDs I guess.

Can we please have a Wish button to add books to our WL when searching for a title or author. Sometimes I search an author and every book is wish list. But to add each one I have to click on each listing. I used to be able to go to my wish list, search something and it would bring up a list with a Wish button there. But that doesn't work anymore.

I get really frustated with having to bring up each book to add it to my wish list and then have to back page to get back to the main list.

(Ok well I see if do the Search Amazon thing then I get a wish button). Would still be nice to have that button on the main list.

Sometimes you find out people has the same intrest, but friendship is reserved for reciproc and deeper relations, whilst this i suggest is only for keeping track of good lists.

It's not a priority for something to be fixed, but it's not an accurate reflection of BM traffic. One could try mooching the book a number of times without success and that book will show as having been moooched.

It would be nice if, when a book I have mooched has been rejected, it is immediately put back in my wishlist, or at least a link in the email that gives me the option to put it back in my wishlist right away. I just had to go through a bunch of rejected mooch emails (from a closed account) and individually go to each book detail page and put each book back in my wishlist.

I am under the impression that the recommendations list draws its information not only from mooched and wishlisted books, but also from books given away. That seems like a flawed mechanism, since I (and most users I would think) frequently give books away I really didn't like or am just not interested in anymore.

Could that be changed? That would be wonderful.

I'm sure I'll have more suggestions, but right now the thing on my mind is that it would be really cool to have a bulk add option for wishlists. When I discover a new author I'll often check bookmooch to see if anything is available. When the list of books pulls up it would be wonderful to have checkboxes or something of the sort so people can select multiple titles to add all at once. Apologies if something like this has been suggested before, I did a quick check and it didn't seem like it!

I would love if there was an option to mooch multiple books from the same owner, instead of having to do the process over for each book. Or maybe a way to click on multiple books within their inventory and then mooch them all together.

Also, I'd like a way to save another user's page for a later date. Myspace had an option to set another's profile to favorites. The reason I would like this is: if for example they seem to like similar authors/books that may or may not be in my wishlist or I happen to find their page when I don't have enough points to mooch multiple books from them. I know adding them as a friend is a good way to do this, but this for newly discovered profile's.

I don't know if it's been suggested before, but maybe we could have separate pages for 'Pending'? For example, you could have one page that shows only books that you are receiving (that have or haven't been sent), one for books that you have already sent, and one for books you have accepted and haven't sent yet. To someone like me (who seems to be slightly OCD about such things >.<) it would be a lot easier and more convenient if it's not to difficult to do.

I looked through and didn't see this, though I could have missed it. People have mentioned it a few times here and there in other places.

Would it be possible to add an option that, when we sent a message to another site user, would let us CC the email to ourselves? For example, if I have to delay a mooch for whatever reason, I'd like to be able to double-check what I said about when I'd send. It would also be nice for people to be able to back themselves up with officially recorded messages if they run into problems with a mooch/other moocher.

I would really love to see this format, in forums...have available to users of the site, a place to post images. I have lately begun to take photos of my books conditions, and the packages, and would even take a shot of the reciept (proving payment to post office) to show our progress of books sent out.

All that would be needed is a picture add. And so many things might be adjusted for people with trust issues or people with a need to only mooch a certain condition of book...and etc.
I would especially like to be able to show folks that I have sent their book but I have realized that, that would be best done only through emailing them the reciept (section) with their particular order, to keep our addresses anonymous, and safe from public viewing.

Please consider a photo add in these forums for the first two reasons. It could be a rule that it not be used for just any other type of pic, or it would be deleted...so as not to be used for any sort of communicae. OR it could be less work if left open ended to be used for any type of communication, and it would really improve the site in my opinion. As an artist I can be very visual.

I for one, would love to see the condition of (some of) the books I am ordering. The option to see the specific book, right there on the book page next to the title would also be lovely, if not in forums! Not everyone would have to, or want to use such a thing...but it would be nice if we could have the option to do so, if we wanted to use a photo add.

Unless I have missed some useful navigation, I find it really tiring to have to scroll through pages and pages of books Sent before I can look at the Books Mooched page. Could we have two buttons, one for books Mooched and one for Books Sent?

That shouldn't be that hard and it would make my life easier. I have had to do this three times in just the past couple of days, and that is because when I mooched a book it wasn't removed from my wishlist. Why is that? Maybe that's a bug you can fix too.

I am frustrated by the extremely manual nature of bookmooch. I wish bookmooch would invest to upgrade its systems, even if it means taking on a commercial partner. Every time I use it, I am less inclined to use it because there are commercial competitors who provide so much more functionality.

My biggest pet peeves:
1. To put a book on your wishlist, you have to click on every single edition of the book and add that edition to your wishlist. There is no way to add all editions of a book to your wishlist.
2. Cannot add a list of books to your wishlist by a batch process. For example, uploading a list of ISBN numbers or titles and having them all automatically added to your wishlist.
3. Servers are slow, which makes doing 1 and 2 extremely time consuming and tedious on a manual basis.

I would love to have a feature that when a sender clicks "delay", they MUST enter a time frame - like you can do when you click accept. I certainly don't mind delays in sending, but it would be nice to know if they are planning to send in two weeks or two months. I've had people delay and then never get back to me. I've waited 6-8 weeks and sent a reminder, just asking for an update, and was ignored.

Okay, this has been a big peeve of mine for a long time, so I'll try not to be too ranty here.

Basically, it's not fair that many BookMooch rules/policies are not stated anywhere on the site. Especially when it comes to rules that could possibly get you in trouble with the admin.

For example, the rule about not being allowed to reject a mooch because the moocher doesn't send worldwide, or not being allowed to list movies and cds... There are *tons* of rules that are serious and could possibly get people in trouble, and are *only* spelled out on the wiki. Even on the wiki you have to dig to find many of these.

It's not fair, to newbies and older members alike, to have site-wide rules that aren't talked about anywhere on the site. I realize the wiki is "official", but the link to the wiki is hidden half-way down the "About" page. I know many members who didn't even *know* there was a wiki.

So my suggestion is to please, *please* make a BookMooch page, easily accessible and linked to, that outlines the basic rules and anything that might get you in trouble with admin.

Why is it that the "Recieved" button is available when a book hasn't even been sent yet? It's very, very frustrating.

I'm sure there is the random moocher who ships a book without marking it as sent, and for that situation it's helpful. But it's also misleading and causes accidents. *Twice* in the last month I've had people marked a books as "recieved" when I hadn't even sent the book yet. The generated email went to my spam-folder, and if I hadn't been looking at old emails I would've never even realized that there was a book missing from my "pending" page!

Like I said, for the moocher who doesn't mark a book sent, I can see it would be helpful. But *most* of the time, it's just.... confusing. I see the option to mark Recieved on a book that hasn't even been mailed, and I just shake my head. I don't understand it. And it obviously does cause mistakes... If we weren't *able* to mark books recieved before they'd been marked sent, then those mistakes I mentioned above wouldn't have happened.

Is there a specific reason why the Recieved button is there regardless of the book's status?

I just joined BookMooch today, and am fascinated/thrilled by what it has to offer to what looks to be a great community!

I have a few copies of several books that I want to give away, but there is no place to indicate that I have more than just ONE book. Can this feature be added?

I realize it's probably not a common occurrence, so perhaps I would have to keep adding those books after I've sent them out?

BTW, love the use of authors' names for the security check!

I spend a lot of time on the computer and check into BookMooch at least three or four times each day. The most upsetting thing about Mooch is that by the time I find, open, and response to an email saying one of my wish list books is available, someone else has already gotten it. Why can't a short hold be put on each book when such emails are sent, giving the first person 24 hours to claim the book before the next person in line can get it.

Hi,

Does anyone know why the ratio doesn't update for internation mooches (ie make the extra two point adjustment) until the book is received? My ratio isn't currently showing a true reflection of my mooching activity because despite sending loads of books internationally, quite a few have been sent surface mail so I'll be waiting a while for them to be marked received. They are therefore not yet shown in the ratio as international books, which makes the ratio look higher than it actually is. I don't think I'm in any danger of going near 2:1, but I'd like to be able to see at a glance the true state of my ratio without having to add up my pending lists to work it out.

Hope the above makes sense! I basically want to know if there's a good reason for the delay, and if not whether it could be changed?

On the pending transaction page I would love it if all the books a person is mooching would show up grouped together. I currently have a person mooching 9 books from me, I don't need her address 9 times. Perhaps it is just an issue of layout - each book request takes up a good amount of the page (on my laptop screen I can only see 3 requests at a time) so I am constantly scrolling to see which books are requested. Adding an option to view all requests in a tidy chart (like Amazon's wishlist's compact view) would be immensely helpful to me.

BM receives much of its data from the Amazon database. This is not always helpful when looking at books to mooch.

PLEASE, have a look at your inventory. If you've a book in there that doesn't have a description because one wasn't picked up from the Amazon database, take a look at the back of the book and copy the cover blurb into the 'review' section. Tell everyone about your book, and give it more chance of being mooched.

Please could we have some clearer statistics - with numbers, not just graphs, and on one easily-accessible top-level site page. I'm sure much of this information is already available, but it's not easy to find.

These statistics need to be more dynamic and updated more frequently than what is currently available, so we as members of the BM community can see how we're doing.

1. Members
1a) Total number of BM members
1b) Number of BM members by country
1c) Number of BM members by region if country is broken down into regions, counties, d�partements, etc.

2. Books available for mooching
2a) Total number of books in inventories available for mooching
2b) Number of books by country
2c) Number of books available for

3. Books mooched

I've found a closed account where the inventory is still showing, it would be nice to clean those up. I don't know if this one is possible, but could an automatic mailing go out to inactive accounts after a reasonable wait (maybe 6 months) warning them that their account is inactive and asking them to log in and check on it? My credit card company does this;) And if there is no response, the account could be vacationed so the inventory isn't visible but the account could still be reactivated if the person returns. I know we can all "vacation" inactive accounts by mooching from them and then canceling with a "did not respond" message, but it leaves a cancellation on our bios, and I have quite a lot of those already. I've got at least a dozen points tied up in probably waste of time mooches which will lead to me vacationing these accounts but that's another dozen cancellations on my record.

Finally, yet another request for Canadian provinces (searchable or visible on bio).

I'd like to see a clean-up of hand-entered books. I'm sure many of these are lying dormant in inventory because they're not easily visible - they wouldn't show up on an Amazon-indexed database.

They've probably been entered by people who haven't understood the system too well. They need a gentle nudge from a BM programme asking them to clean up the entry and re-enter the book with an ISBN.

This would have the effect of making those books more visible and cleaning up the database.

A bit of programming is also needed to index those that are jusfifiably hand-entered for whatever reason: audio books, magazines, books older than ISBN, etc.

The more visible the books in the database, the more they're likely to be mooched as they correspond to someone's wishlist.

What happens the reservation for a book expires?

For example, if the book owner's sending preferences are "my country only", and someone requests a mooch, that book is reserved for the requestor pending reply from the book owner. If the mooch is accepted but the book is not mooched and the reservation expires, it would be preferable if the book then became visible onto the "recent" list, given that it has recently become available.

If the mooch is rejected, the reservation is removed. It would be preferable if mails for the book were then sent to those who have wishlisted the book, and then the now newly available book, were listed on the "recent list". How else is one to know that the book has become available?

There seems to be scope for improving the notification of the reservations system to improve book moochability. This seems to be principally linked to the "ask first" option.

Making book availability more visible might encourage more mooching, a currently debated topic!

When someone that uses a translated version of bookmooch mooches a book from me, the email that I get is in their translated language. I am reasonably multilingual and language-interested, but I still don't prefer to get my bookmooch messages in random languages as decided by the location of the moocher.

Also, when I click links in those letters, I get sent to a translated version of the site, in the language prefered by the moocher, which is probably unknown by me.

The way it should work is of course to show the moocher his language and the person being mooched from his language (if available) or English (otherwise).

If a mooch request is rejected, then the book should remain wishlisted.

I've just had a mooch rejected and by sheer chance found that the book was no longer on my wishlist. I wonder how many other books have dropped off my wishlist. It's perfectly logical to leave a book on the wishlist until it's mooched or removed from the owner's wishlist.

Similarly, I cleaned up my wishlist today by removing entries for books that I'd mooched. I think the removal of duplicates ought to be a suggestion from BM if a similar books is mooched. Thus when I acknowledge receipt of a mooched book from my wishlist, there should be a message asking whether I want to use this opportunity to remove other copies of the same book from my wishlist or not. This is a problem that's going to occur when multiple copies of the same book are added to a wishlist.

When a previously-inactive user returns and re-activates their account, their existing Inventory should be "quarantined" (i.e. kept inactive) rather than being made immediately visible. Today, before the user realizes what is going on, he/she will be overwhelmed with mooch requests for many of the books in their instantly-activated Inventory. And if they have been inactive for a while, their Inventory is likely out of sync with their bookshelf. In both cases the result is a bunch of canceled mooches, frustrating the requesters and tarnishing the returning user's record. The suggestion is to leave the user's Inventory intact but inactive (similar to Wishlist Save-For-Later), until the user has reviewed the books and manually moved them back into active Inventory.

I exported my wishlist, but the sort isn't useful to me.
So I clicked on author and exported again. The export file is the same.
I'd been hoping to be able to export a CSV file, sorted by author's lastname that I could import into a spreadsheet, print and take with me, or use somehow other than having to put it onto a word-crunching machine.
Is there something I missed? Or is this a feature that's part-way there but needs a geekie tweak?

The location of members (and their books)from the USA includes not only the country but also the state abbreviation. I bet this has been raised or considered before (if so, please direct me to the discussion{s}), but I will state here my own request for this minor feature to be extended to and replicated for members of other countries as well. Perhaps it's not necessary, nor would it even be helpful, in all of the countries, but certainly for those that cover large areas of land and contain several states or provinces. But as a member who originally joined and used the site from the USA and has since relocated to India, I know I would appreciate that info as I look at the offerings currently available here. Possible? Please?

Could we see this feature in the future? Specifically, I live in the United States, due to high overseas shipping I am really only willing to ship to Mexico and Canada (in addition to the US), is there a possibly to set this? Rather than, possibly, choosing to ship only to one continent dependent on your country, maybe you can choose which countries to send to from a multi-choose drop down list. People who wish to send international from the US, but can only send to, say Iran and Cuba via DHL, might choose all but those, if they are only willing to send via national post.

In anycase, this feature would make mooching easier for people who want things from me who live in countries I will mooch to, they don't need to ask, basically. I ask this because I do not want to set my profile to 'Will Send International' and then reject all the overseas nations.

Mention of books removed from inventory when pending for exchange

Current situation : A book can be removed from inventory without any track left even if it is a pending, and sometime even an accepted transaction... then sometime relisted by the person just afterward, the initial moocher having the book just vanishing as they don't receive the info that a formal rejection would give them.

Proposal : Removing such a book with
- a pending asking first request,
- an accepted asked first request,
~~- or a pending mooch,~~ (already can't happen, mistake of mine)

...from inventory would now :
- prompt a rejection with the book owner able to state why or leave blank
- leave the usual rejection track in histories and feedback.

I suspect there's some people where the amount and nature of such rejections would help future moochers to know when to give a wide berth if they don't want to deal with someone who is double/triple/quadruple listing to h*** and back on other sites and not keeping inventory up to date, or because they're just not in a country that person will send to despite their unwillingness to explicitly state so.

I'm posting this hear because I'm frustrated, have already contacted admin, and have been told by several long-timers that this has been noticed by admin, but nothing has been done about it.

When you mark a book that you have mooched as "lost", there is no way to leave feedback for the transaction. It gives an error message, something like "no transaction with that ID" or something.

This is VERY frustrating, especially in those instances when you are fairly sure the book wasn't "lost" but that the user just never sent it. BookMooch puts a lot of emphasis on feedback, uses feedback to determine if a user is scamming, etc etc, so it's very frustrating that I'm not able to leave appropriate feedback and potentially warn people. This has been a bug for a LONG time, one that usually isn't even noticed because it's not often that you have to mark a book "lost". I'm more then a little frustrated that such a serious bug, about something as precious as feedback, has gone on so long.

As I said, I've contacted admin, I've posted about it on LibraryThing, and I keep hearing the same thing. They know about it, and it will get taken care of. But it never does.

(edit: and, can someone who has experience with "forced-recieved" tell me if it's possible to leave feedback for that, if for example you had a book force-recieved on you and never recieved it?)

I would like the posibility to put a category to books, like for instance novels, biograpies, fact-books..
It would simplify and narrow the searches.
The browsing by category is a bit messy, for example under Outdoors and Nature i would expect to find books about survival, or how to grow things, but i can find all kinds of fiction: Sam Browns Demons & Angels....Bridget Jones Diary. Not what i would call Outdoor and Nature.

Have you ever tried searching for a keyword and not been able to see the trees for the forest? For instance - try finding a book on Mars. Probably 90% of the results will have the word "Venus" in them. Page after page of Mars and Venus (and they're not even science or SF). With the ability to add a minus sign, the search could be written "Mars -Venus" and voila! No Venus!! At the moment, writing "Mars -Venus" results in only those books which DO have both words in the title.

There are other easily added search modes, the most useful (to me) being phrase searching: enclosing a search phase in quotes so that the words in the search return only those results with all the words and in the correct order.

Frequently I find a WL book showing up as a copy available, and when I check I see "water damaged", "lots of underlining but still readable", missing pages or cover, "my dog ate the corner", etc. It would be wonderful to be able to click a "remove this copy" button so that a nice clean copy might show up and be obvious on the WL. It sounds like this would be an easy addition, although I'm not a programmer....

Since they revamped the WL-you can't search from your WL anymore and then just click to add books from the list that comes up. You have to click on each one that comes up to get the WL button.

I like to add every version instead of relying the related editions option.

Would it be possible for the Wishlist and Save-for-later to have the facility to save just an author. I often hear or read of an author new to me, and when I search for them I find their canon. It would be nice, instead of having to chose just one book from this, to be able to save the author. Then if any one of their published books is added to someone's inventory it would appear on my wishlist and I could choose to mooch it.

When someone who uses one of the non-English subsites mooches a book from me, or asks if I'll send something to their country, the email that's generated is to their subsite, rather than mine.

This requires me to remember my password and username to login, since my browser doesn't have them memorized. Plus, parts of the email, and the resulting webpages are in in another language. It'd be better if those emails were sent to me based on the subsite I use, rather than the one the requester uses.

In addition to Yes or No, I would love to see a third option in the system response: "I can't send to your country but I will let your reservation stand while you find an angel." And, because there are people who don't understand about angels, I would include a link to the angel wiki page.
I have no idea what would be involved in programming this and I do realize things are rarely as simple as they seem. Still, I think this would be a very useful feature; it would be a great way to let more people know about the angel network; and I, as well as everyone else whose ask-first request has been summarily dismissed, would be eternally grateful.

I had this thought today that a "save for later" option for the inventory might be a useful thing. I try to keep my listed books at a certain number to make sure I don't get too many requests at the same time. But I also have a pile of books waiting to be listed once the others have gone. I can think of two reasons why it would be useful to have an option to already list these books in a kind of "save for later list" only visible to myself.

1.) I can list books when I have a moment of free time. It would then be quicker to transfer them to my actual inventory when I want to.

2.) (probably more important). If the "save for later" list would show if a book is wishlisted, that might help in deciding which books to list next. Imagine I have a book that someone wants at the bottom of my pile, and I don't know that.

When I show a list of books by a given author, it would be nice to see the publisher, to enable me to decide quickly whether to (a) try mooching a copy or (b) which copy to add to my wishlist.
As I mainly mooch internationally, it is only in exceptional circumstances that I really want to add a heavy hardback to my wishlist. Being able to see the publisher would help me decide more quickly which of many editions I want to add to my wishlist.

BM statistics show us most-requested books. Rather than having to trawl through page after page of this to get to the end, please could we have "least wishlisted".
These less popular books may be hiding at the back of shelves or in boxes somewhere. Seeing that someone else is looking for the book may encourage people to list their unwanted copies.
The beauty of BM to me is not finding a book I could pick up relatively easily, but tracking down a book I've been trying to find for a very long time. I recently mooched an out-of-print book that I'd never seen in a secondhand bookshop. That makes BM worthwhile for me.

1. I would like to be able to specify whether related editions in another language to appear on a wishlist or not - in my case not. My wishlist becomes populated with related editions I don't want to mooch because they're not the language I specified.
2. When I add a book to my wishlist, I'd like a message to warn me that I already have another edition of that book on my wishlist. Some people may want to fill their wishlists with related editions; I'll take a gamble that a related edition may automatically pop up, since in my case as long as the book is in the language I've specified, I'm not bothered about format. Therefore being warned that another edition is already on my wishlist saves me from manually checking - useful if wishlists are large.
3. When I mooch a book from my wishlist, I'd like all other related editions to automatically disappear from my wishlist - maybe this needs to be a selectable feature, but I'd be happy for it to default to removing all related editions.
4. I'm happy, books on my wishlist occasionally crop up. When they don't I read other books and populate my wishlist even further!

When I am hand-entering a book that has been published in the Netherlands, BookMooch automatically sets the language of the book to Dutch, and there is nothing I can do to change it. In fact, I'm not even told what language BookMooch thinks it's in until the process is complete.
And many of the books I want to enter are published in the Netherlands but the text is in English, for instance because they were published for schools, like this one: F. Scott Fitzgerald : The great Gatsby
I have had cancellations because people saw the language it supposedly was in. Usually correctable, but completely unnecessary.
I can put it in the description, or in the condition notes, but that isn't ideal either.

I would like it very much if there was an option to change the language to a non-default language, at the very least when hand-entering a book.

Something else I would like to see and I'm sure has been mentioned, is the ability to put my inventory on hold or "vacation" status but still be able to come and go without having to "become active" again each time I log in. Just because my inventory isn't active doesn't mean I'm not. I am in here daily a minimum of 6 times per day even. This would be great. And if it is already an active feature that I do not know about yet...sorry..:o)

I don't know about anyone else, but I really liked it (for that very brief amount of time during all of the changes) when my inventory page did NOT also have my pending 'sends' on it. I would love to see a toggle in the drop down menu or some way that allows for that. It kind of seems redundant to have those showing when I can just go to my pending page for that. When I go to my inventory page I want to see just what the public sees. Or, at the very least, the option to do so.

Oh, and now that the drop downs are gone on the wishlist/save-for-later, I miss not being able to just move a book or two from the wish list to my save-for-later page. I can't always mooch them right away when they come up and if they are still there after a week, I try to move them over until I can mooch.

A very helpful feature for angels to use would be somehow a way of listing & recording all current/pending angel transactions, so the details are not forgotten while angels wait for a book to arrive from the original book owner.
Book title, from whom, angel-led for whom, any other books to send with it, Notes to self for the angel...& approx or promised mailing date.

I know I could always do it on a word spreadsheet or like, but would prefer all BM stuff here on the one site.

a couple of features it's disappointing to ask for ...

BLOCKING: there are some users I'd like to block from mooching from me (for rudeness, laziness, etc). I think it should be possible to do this.

REPORTING: some users join up, list some books, and never bother participating after that - it should be possible to report these people and have their accounts deleted, or at the very least, have an admin put them in vacation mode.

I love bookmooch and hope that it gets more and more popular and the current batch of quality users/moochers grows, and the quality of books grows along with it.

It is also a cute mark and also advertising for the site which could lead to more books.

People could even write what country it was in so you could see the books history.

Two new things that would be great.

1) You know when you create a hyperlink with the square brackets & the 10 digit ISBN to create a direct link to a book? EG: when asking for an angel......
I think that would be great on one's own bio page to promote what you're currently reading.
Could/would stimulate conversation with someone who has read it or interested in doing so.
There could be a section on the profile page to fill-in with the 10 digit ISBN, that would then show up on your bio page & create the book title & author in blue with a link to it.
Or even just the ability to do it within the text of your own bio message.
I have tried it with the square brackets and 10 digits, but all I get come up is the 10 digits in brackets just as it is typed.

2) For the author of emails sent within the system to receive a copy of them to recall what was said or offered in the email.
Currently the author of system emails doesn't get a copy of same.

Hi,

Could you add inventory count to a person's own summary, please? If I look at my own profile, I see books to send, sent, to receive, receive, mooched, given, etc.
However, if I look at someone else's profile, I see their inventory count.
It would be "nice to have" to see how many books I have in my own inventory on the summary page rather than having to click on the inventory tab.

Did it move and I'm not seeing it or didn't they take it away? I miss it-I try to check my WL a couple of times a day because I rarely get WL emails in time to actually mooch a WL book.

Anyway-it took awhile and I finally stopped after only a few pages of trying to scan. But it's late and I'm tired. I would still like the show all button back.

I do appreciate how much easier and quicker it is to remove books from the WL now.

Would it be possible to add a flag H (hardback) or P (paperback) against books in a list to show the binding. I often don't care what edition I receive, but when faced with multiple choices of a book to add to a wishlist, I'd like to be able to see the binding in the list, enabling me to more quickly select the paperback version, rather than having to select each book and see what type it is.
Carrying this through to my wishlist, the H or P flag would then enable me to more easily weed out duplicate entries.
Of course, the perfect version would be to see an ISO code for where published and publication date too, but that's maybe for another time!

I have some books on my wishlist where about 100 others are wishing also. Not everyone actually reads email the moment they receive it, causing us to miss out on newly available books from the wishlist. The person who actually snags the book may have been wishing for a few days, and the person wishing for a few years may miss out. (Please correct me if I'm wrong/misunderstanding the site features.)
To make wishlist items more fair and avoid people wishing for months, I would suggest a sort of "waiting list" feature? First to wish, first to get offered the next available copy? I think this would be an awesome feature for maximum mooching satisfaction.

Seen a few of these by now : reviews where the user, either through laziness, lack of knowledge, wish to draw attention, or maybe some earlier state of the site I never knew which made it a common practice, used the review field to list condition notes for the individual book they were listing, or other possible irrelevant content.

Of course, now the particular book is long gone, and 95+% of the time the user seems to be long gone too so mailing them to please come back and clean up on a site they're no longer interested in would probably not do much good...

I use the "Recommendations" a lot. I think it is a great way to find new books to read and branch out from my usual list of authors, etc. I would, however, like to see an option for being able to "hide" all the books from an author versus having to go through the list book by book. There are some authors I just don't want to read or authors that I track on my own, so I don't need them on my recommended list.

Why you ask?

Well,,, from Holland to the rest of Europe (european postal zone) the postage is the same for all countries. Belgium is same price as Moscow.
Stupid? Maybe. But it is a fact.

So instead of searching for moochable books for one country at a time it could be possible to search for 'all books withingh Europe. Because the costs for the sender of the books to Holland (in my case) will be low enough for all those countries.

Well, I posted about this in the latest blog-thread about the new changes, but I'll post it here too, maybe get a little more attention on it.

I don't understand why, since all the new changes happened, changes I make to my save-for-later settings affect my wishlist settings. Shouldn't they be seperate?

Example: I *DO* want my wishlist to show related editions, because wishlist-books are not so easily available. I do *NOT* want my save-for-later to show related editions, because those are books that have multiple editions/copies available and I'm *saving them for later*.

Yet, when I change my "save for later" to hide all related editions, it changes for my wishlist too! If this isn't an outright bug, I really REALLY hope it gets changed. Wishlist and Save For Later are DIFFERENT lists, serving different purposes. They should have different settings available.

I'd love to see when, as in exact time, a reservation expires as well as the date it expires when I view a book with a reservation. There are several books that I've really wanted in the past couple of weeks which have been reserved for other members who let the reservation expire without mooching the book, but I couldn't catch the moment the reservation expired to request the book myself. If I knew that a book was reserved at 8:57 a.m. and so the reservation would expire at 8:57 a.m., I could get up early and log onto my computer, whereas if a book was reserved at 11:59 p.m., I would know not to bother getting up at the crack of dawn. As it stands, it's frustrating to me to have to check my computer several times throughout the day, trying to catch the reservation expiration, only to miss it by an hour or two because I don't know when the reservation expires exactly and lose the book to someone else. Obviously if the time were published, several people might try to reserve the book at once, but at least everyone would be on a more level field instead of at the complete whim of fortune.

Also, I hate that I don't get a reminder email when a wish list book is back in circulation after its reservation expires. That would be helpful, because I wouldn't have to watch the expiration so closely for books I really want that someone else was lucky enough to reserve before I could.

Hi,

I'd like to see additional information as part of the pending page:
1. "My inventory reserved for..." showing books I've reserved for other people, where the reservation is still running
2. "Reserved for me": showing (a) current reservations of books other people have reserved for me, and if possible (b) books which have been reserved for me and where the reservations have recently expired. This latter part of the request because sometimes the mail reserving a book doesn't come through.

An easier way to delete WL books?

I don 't know how hard this would be but if it's possible: could we have on the WL boxes to check off and a delete button? I just had to delete several books that I no longer wanted or acquired elsewhere. It took quite a bit of time on the ancient computer I'm using to wait for it to remove each one. And then I would kind of lose my place on the screen and have to scan the whole list all over again. The whole time I was thikning how much easier it would have been if I could just check a box next to all the ones I wanted to remove and hit a delete button at the bottom of the page.

Just a thought.

Is there a way to suggest corrections to the "related editions" data? I fairly often get emails about editions that are not actually related to the book on my wishlist-- sometimes laughably unrelated (today "Freshman Heartbreak (Freshman Dorm)" was related in the mind of the database to Pasolini's poems.

If not, I would recommend a feature that allows you to "stop receiving emails about this edition only" for those who want to keep receiving emails about truly related editions, but not about the "falsely related" edition which prompted the email.

I have been receiving mooches that aren't really there (the International owner won't ship to my country), or that have no cover or other defects I don't want. But the Mooch stays on my Wishlist.

This may already be possible: Is there a way to reject a mooch so I don't have to keep checking it out?

I think that this subject has been mentioned before but I just had to cancel a request because I had previously mooched a book and it was not deleted from my wishlist. That makes me mad because then I have a large number of cancelled requests and that doesn't look good. It makes me look like a flake rather than a person who just mooches so many books that she can't remember what she has.

I know, the solution would be to stop mooching books until you've caught up on your reading. Well, I admit, it's an addiction and I just can't stop so could we work on the tool and try to ensure that once a book has been mooched, that it's deleted from the wishlist?

Thanks and BTW, I really think this is an amazing website so I am not complaining (regardless of how it might look), I'm just trying to make it better.

Hi ~~~
I just cancelled a request due to no fault of the book owner. In fact, a book that I had been told was lost showed up. Therefore, I had to cancel a request for the same book that I had made after I was told that the previous book was lost.

So I wanted to give the book owner a 1+ feedback score, because she was very understanding about me cancelling my request. But that option wasn't available. Could you please add that option, for those rare cases like mine?

Unfortunately, I can't remember all of them and I would like to be able to go back and see what I have sent out. Is there a way to make an archive of all the emails that I have sent via BM? (maybe even those that are sent for other reasons as well)

I wish we could still access our account while on vacation hold. I'm moving and all my books are packed up now. I came on to go on vacaton and had 2 book requests to send. I can find 1 and wrapped it marked and mailed. The 2nd book appears to have been packed up already. If I go on vacation then I have to come off vacatione every time I want to look at my account.

I sent an email to the 2nd requestor to ask if they would prefer that I cancel or delay the mailing of the packed book. I don't know if I go on vacation, if I'll get her response. But if I stay off vacation then I risk getting an order for a book that might be packed. I'd prefer not to delete all my books and then have to repost them. I don't have many so it's not that big of a deal. But for someone with a lot of books posted it would be.

Anyway it would be nice to put my books to send on vacation but still be able to come on a mooch books or access my inventory while still on vacation.

I would like to see the set-up of the ask first message changed so that the requestors comments are at the top instead of at the bottom. I often include information about the angel network especially to new moochers who sometimes panic when they get an international request. I think, quite often, book owners dont even see the comments because theyre at the bottom and look just like the rest of the message. Moving the comments to the top and possibly even making the text a colour other than black, would certainly improve the visibility and might even reduce the number of hits to the NO button.
p.s. Id also like a pony :-)

When I search for a book, I'd like to see a symbol in the returned search list that indicates that a particular copy is already on my wishlist.

So, for example, if a search for a given book title returns say 8 copies of that book, one of them would have a symbol (W, for example) against it to show that the book was on my wishlist.

An extension of this would be to show that the copy has already been mooched by me.

The Condition note is a useful feature; I use it for each of my
listings to alert BookMoochers of the condition of the item they would
be receiving from me.

Unfortunately, the Condition note only seems to become available to the
lister to complete _after_ an item is listed, i.e. _after_ emails have
gone out to those who might have the item on their Wishlist.

I recently listed a book which was on the Wishlists of more than 200
BookMoochers. The book had some soiling issues, and it took a few
minutes to complete the note. Being a newbie, I was unaware that the
Condition note feature is available to the lister only until the title
is claimed by a moocher. As it happened, the book was snapped up in
just a few minutes before I could attach the Condition note.

The BookMoocher whon claimed the book, not seeing a Condition note with
the listing, may have thought the book was in a better condition than it
actually is. I do not know.

I sent the moocher two notes explaining the situation in order to
provide a chance to cancel if desired. When I did not hear back after
several days, I figured the condition was unimportant to the moocher,
and I sent off the book. We shall see how the moocher reacts upon
receipt of the book.

I learned that a better strategy is to use an editor or word processor
to prepare the Condition note _in advance_ of listing an item, copy it
to the computer's memory, and then quickly paste it into the Condition
note box immediately upon listing the title. I did this successfully
later on with a much more detailed Condition note; the book was taken
by a moocher who responded that my note had been read carefully and
that the book was still desired.

In my opinion, this first episode and uncertainty could have been
avoided if the listing process were engineered _not to be completed_
until the lister has the chance to sign off on the Condition note. Only
thereupon would emails be sent out to BookMoochers having the title on
their Wishlist. Although signing off on a Condition note would
constitute another button to consider or even another step in the
process (depending on how it is engineered) for those who do not
ordinarily include such notes with their listings, this disadvantage
would be offset by the subtle encouragement to listers to go ahead and
prepare a Condition note with their listings -- a "best practices" type
of strategy whose implementation can only result in less potential
misunderstanding and greater harmony among users of this site.

The suggestion is to display a feedback Score instead of a feedback Total.

On the Bio page, a member's feedback is summarized with a total number, e.g. "+3". Member A with feedback +1, +1, +1 will show "+3". Member B with feedback +1, +1, +1, +1, 0, 0, 0, -1 will also show "+3". Clearly one would rather mooch from A, who has been perfect, than from B, who started strong but is now fading. To correctly interpret the present feedback total, you have to compare it with the "Books Given" total, elsewhere on the page (math, ugh).

If a Score was displayed instead of a Total, the Feedback would look something like:

Feedback: 100% (last 10), 94% (lifetime)

In the example above, Member A would score 100% (3/3), but Member B would score only 38% (3/8). When computing the Score, it is suggested that Rejects should be included (and tallied as 0).

The "last 10" score is shown first because one mostly cares about how a person has been doing lately, rather than months ago.

I would like to be able to print my inventory with a print button on the screen.

I would like to be able to arrange my inventory alphabetically by book title for when i have to purge errors from my list by comparing what's listed with what I actually have...what to read as priority.

I would like to have a 'to be read' list so I know what I have at home that needs to be read.

I would like to be able to see at a glance if one of my books in a 'to be read' list is on someone else's wishlist so I know what to consider as a priority to read.

This is something I'd find useful. I have a few friends on here now but quite a few have hundreds of books in their inventory and theyre always listed in alphabetical order, so in order to find out if they've added new books I have to wade through all the pages and then I end up lost and confused! I dont find RSS feeds useful at all and never use it,but how about a simple "NEW Books" applet next to your friends name?

I wish that language preferences could be set for my profile so that all subsequent searches would be limited by my language perimeters.

Or, at least, after searching for a title, it would be nice if the language preference was an option on the main search page, instead of under advanced search. It's pain to keep going into advanced settings after each individual search.

I would greatly appreciate the ability to add an "author" to my Wish List. Once added, BM would email me any time a book by that author was added to the site.

The email would work the same as the current Wish List email, and allow me to request to mooch the book.

There are a number of authors that have a lot of works out there, and it is quite possible that I don't even know about a series the author has written. By following the author, I may come across something new.

It might just be me, but I will remember mooching a book and search my shelves for it without any luck. When I go into my mooched books list, I will see I did mooch it. That just confuses me more. If I am feeling ambitious, I will wade through my point listing and see if I can find the point exchange, sometimes finding that the exchange had been canceled and then I will remember that, yes I did mooch, but for 'x' reason it was canceled. So my wished-for feature is that the mooched book listing would either not include canceled requests or simply note that they were canceled.

If this does exist and I am just blind to it, please let me know. I have a lot of books and it can make me crazy trying to find one I am sure I mooched a few months ago.

I've just cancelled a mooch because the owner didn't reply after six weeks. When I cancel a mooch, I'd like BM to ask me whether I want to add that book to my wishlist. Of course, I can do it manually, but it would nice for BM to recognise that I probably would like that book at sometime, and remind me to put it back on my wishlist.

I found a page on the profile page and it told me all about it except for how to find it. It is important to have this information on all help topics and adding a link would be helpful too.

Also, it would be nice to see a link or button to your profile on the member home page as well.

Hi,

Just wondered if there was anyway we could get an small box for a few sentences for people when you refuse an international mooch.

I will send internationally but I have a limited budget and I don't like having a backlog and keeping people waiting for months. (Also it makes me stressed and this is supposed to be fun) So I will refuse the mooch but it would be nice to be able to put a few sentences explaining why or giving a timeline of when you will be able to send again and when they should try to mooch again or even direct them to the Angel network.

The flat NO is so harsh. I feel bad sending it to people.

I wish that, if an account is on hold or if the user hasn't logged in in a specified amount of time, that their books would not appear in the inventory. I now have mooch icons next to 4 books for accounts that are on hold. I can't mooch them, so I would rather not see them as moochable in my wish list. Is there a way to do that?

I find myself wishing a lot of time that it was a bit easier to use the reserved book feature and would like to make the following two suggestions.

1. I would love to be able when reserving a book for someone to get a drop down screen that shows all of my friends so I might click on the ones I am wanting to reserve for rather than having to just reserve for all friends or trying to type in each one individually. It would be much easier for those of us with a lot of BM friends and less confusing.

2. It would be nice to have a link that would take you to any books that have been reserved for you that you can check. I know a lot of us don't always send a book recommendation to all our friends when ever we put a reserve on a book for all friends nor do some of us want to get all those emails, as I have been told by my Bookmooch friends so I sparingly send them now :o) so I think this would be a good alternative for those who do not want to receive individual emails saying that a book has been recommended to or put on reserve for them.

John would you be able to create a 'Notes to self' field?
From one's own home page, a BM button that leads to a blank page where upon you can put notes to yourself of angel arrangements, deals agreed to, etc. And anything else as reminders to yourself that would otherwise go on a scrap piece of paper near the computer & probably get lost.

People often write things like "I can't ship for at least a month" but neglect to actually identify the start date and it seems some people have had such messages for as long as I can remember.

Would it be possible to upgrade the BookMooch internet connection (http) to a secure, encrypted one (https), at least when we're logging in and changing our profile information?

That way we wouldn't have to worry that other people might grab our internet traffic and seeing our BookMooch passwords and other sensitive information (like home addresses) in the clear, when logging in and changing our profile information while using BookMooch on open wi-fi networks. I know it's quite unlikely that this would happen, but as long as BookMooch is using only an unsecure connection from users' computers to it's servers, it's certainly a possibility. Thanks.

I would like to make a request for a reorganization of the Pending Page.
At present I have more than a dozen books winging their way to and from me through the postal system, and I'm sure I'm nowhere near the most prolific moochers, but I find the list quite confusing.

I would prefer this order:
-Books I have accepted to send
-Books I have sent
-Books I have requested
-Books others have accepted to send to me
-Books others have sent to me

This way I would see my unfulfilled commitments at the top of the page - very useful when I am rushing out the door to the Post Office and want to ensure I haven't forgotten something.
Listing books I have sent next just gives me a complete picture of my present commitments in one place.

Also organizing others moochers' commitments to me in logical order would make for easier reference.

A while ago (a long while ago) a member had set up a site where people could trade their Bookmooch points for items other than books (CDs, videos, other items). This site was not actually affiliated with BM so when that member left, the trading stopped. Another member offered to start another site, but I seem to recall her being told that this was something that was going to be integrated into the new Bookmooch Forums once they were up. So I was wondering if that would be an appropriate forum to start? Bookmooch Barter - where people could offer things other than books they were willing to trade for Bookmooch points, particulary since there have been quite a few postings recently about people having an overabundance of points to spend. Or are there plans to handle this some other way?

I just mooched 9 books from the same person and it was a chore. Many, many clicks and many, many clicks to go back to inventory pages. Worse, they were "ask first" mooches and, if the answer is yes, I'll have to go through the same thing, again.

A nice feature would be a check box against each book in someone's inventory with a "mooch all checked" button and let the system expand the records.

I don't how much of a problem this is, but it is going to be a continuing one for me because I'm mooching children's books for a charity.

It is almost impossible to search by topic.
Fiction is listed in the non-fiction, for instance can be found thru out the "Biographies and Memoirs" section, the "Non-fiction" section, etc.
And what has "Black Beauty" by Anna Sewell got to do with gardening?

Very frustrating when I have a lot of points and looking for books.

Any ideas on how to make searching less of a pain?

Now that the forums are starting to get more and more active, it seems like a good time to think about giving users more fine-grained control over what material they choose to display and read...

On a thread level, high-traffic forums like the general Discussion board can get really busy, and a forum reader may not find all of the different topics equally interesting. A button to hide/ignore individual threads within the forum would make it easier to visually declutter the forum and skip over the subjects you're not interested in.

On a user level, as time goes by a reader may come to recognize that there are certain other posters they'd really rather not read -- they're not doing anything in violation of the rules, but may just have a habit of frequently bringing up pet subjects you find tiresome or offensive. If readers have an option to automatically hide all posts/comments by a particular user, that's the fairest balance between everyone's freedoms and comforts. This may help to maintain greater harmony on the forums, too -- it's easier to avoid the urge to get into heated arguments over personality clashes, political/philosophical differences, etc. if you can easily avoid seeing the material that makes you want to argue in the first place!

I am a middle school teacher and I am always looking for great teen books to mooch. The problem is that there is no teen genre or category. Anyone who has kids or teaches can tell that there is a huge difference between children's and teen or young adult books. Having a teen category would make searching for books so much easier and less time consuming. I really hope there is a way that you can do this.

I'm a fairly new bookmoocher, and am very happy to have found you. I'm at a point where I need to clear out clutter and found your site so easy to find good homes for many of my books.

My problem is that I have books both in English and Italian. And while I can do a ISBN search to pull up the English listings, I would really like to do the same for the Italian books. I know that I can hand-enter the book, but it's so much easier to give books away when there is an attached cover shot and synopsis.

You have options for Germany and France & Japan, is it not possible to do the same for Italy????

It would be great if when looking for a book you could see a members history of time to respond. Most users accept requests quickly and post the book of in a few days. Some members seem to take an age to accept a request and others weeks or months to post a book. I know there are probably good reasons for this but I'd like to easily see what sort of response I can expect before making a mooch request.

Would it be possible to include a search field for "will send to your country" or "will send worldwide" in the advanced search page?

I often do a simple search and then click "my country" to see what is available locally, but if there is nothing then the only option is to go back to "all countries" and keep selecting until I can find someone who will send.

Receiving a copy of emails written.

You know how when you send an email to a member/moocher via the 'email>' link from their bio page or the pending page?
I would like to request an added feature for the sender of the email to receive a copy of the email they sent to another member.
When corresponding with quite a few other members it is hard to keep track of what I have said or offered someone else.
Than when wanting to follow-up on the correspondence sent it would be easy to track it with the original email being in your own in-box.
Admittedly I can see my original script if they use 'reply' on their end, but something more would be good.
Making any sense here?

Favorite Books List

I love the Recommendations feature, I love browsing the list and I've mooched several books through there. The only problem is that my really favorite books are ones that I've read before discovering BookMooch, and it bothers me that the recommendations generator doesn't know how much I love them!

So my suggestion is to add a "Favorite Books List", which would allow BookMoochers to add books to it just like the Wishlist and the Saved-for-later.

For most I think the real value of such a feature would be just the ability to display such a list in their profile. The thing that would make me happy is knowing the recommendations generator has all information it needs to know about me. Either way it's two birds with one stone. :)

Another useful new forum -- thanks again, John!

I'm going to start the ball rolling with some wishlist-related brainstorming, inspired by the side discussion going on in the general forum's thread on reservations.

- Bulk addition: the way wishlisting currently works is geared a bit more towards folks who are primarily interested in a very specific edition/format/etc. of a specific title; if you just want a particular book in any version you can get, or anything and everything by a particular author, it can become rather tedious and time-consuming having to click back and forth to add each different edition one at a time. If there's any way to make it easier to add multiple books/editions of a single book, that might encourage some Moochers to use their wishlists more, and thus cut down on the folks complaining or leaving the site because they feel they don't get enough of the books they really want.

- Bulk removal: those of us who are already manually wishlisting multiple editions of a much-wanted book get hit with a double-whammy of tedium -- once we finally get a copy of the desired title, cleaning up all the OTHER wishlist entries we put in one-at-a-time for alternate editions now means clicking "REMOVE" over and over to delete the entries one by one. It would be wonderful if our wishlist pages included checkboxes and an option to delete all selected listings, along with the current "remove this one book" and "remove all wishlist entries" options.

- Improved granularity in "related to your wishlist" messages: currently, notices of a book related to one on your wishlist comes with options to turn off related notices for the specific title, or turn off related notices altogether. Would it be possible to turn off related notices for books in specific formats (hardcover vs. paperback), languages, or listed by Moochers outside of the wishlister's country? I frequently get wishlist-related notices about books in languages I don't speak, for instance, but I'd like to have the option to allow/disallow such messages on a case-by-case basis, as there are some artbooks that I'd happily Mooch no matter what language the text is in. Similarly, where international Mooches are concerned I wouldn't want to just have a global yes/no toggle -- some books I want badly enough to spend the extra point on Mooching from someone in another country, others just aren't worth quite that much to me.
