Mailing in/from the US

I just moved to the US, and would like to continue mooching and sending books from here. So now I'm trying to figure out the best way of sending them. I remember reading somewhere before that there was a cheaper way than "normal" postage, but that you had to order envelopes online or something. Anyone have any tips?

What is the procedure for receiving an incorrect or wrong book?

What is the correct procedure when receiving an incorrect or wrong book? I'd like to know and for some reason, I'm not finding it in the help and the wiki is currently un-accessible.

In my particular case, the sender had sent two books to two people and had mixed the books, so, we each got the wrong book. They then wanted me to agree to a mooch exchange between myself and the other recipient. When I declined, they requested that I return the book. They said I could return it COD, but I have no guarantee that I'll get my money or my credit, so, I'm not inclined to do this either.

Normally I'm a relatively nice person, but this mooch has gone wrong and it's not my fault. So, I don't feel I should be expected to pay for it.

ISBN coming up as a different book

I am trying to add a book to my inventory ISBN 9780007362967 'Mummy Told Me Not To Tell' by Cathy Glass. When I enter the number, it is coming up correctly on the first screen, but when I go into the details screen, it is coming up as 'I Miss Mummy' by Cathy Glass. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get around this. Thanks

Retuning a point if the name doesn't appear in the charity link

Hi -
I offered a 2 for 1 on specific books but when I attempted to reimburse her the point using the donate to charity her name wasn't there.
I used it as it appears, I removed the location - it wasn't there.
I wrote to tech support but they never responded (I thought that names might be missing from the list.)
Is there a way to locate someone to donate them or am I supposed to be writing their name differently?
I really want to reimburse her the point but I don't know how else to do it.

I've been a moocher for a number of years and am having an experience I've never had before. I have just finined reading THE AFFAIR by Lee Child. I am trying to add it to my inventory and keep getting a message thatwhat I am trying to add is a Kindle edition. I think I know that a Kindle edition is an electronic media and is hard to confuse with the hardback book that I am holding in my hand. Somewhere someone has slipped a digit because the isbn on my jacket cover says 978-0-385-34432-6 and the same on the inside. When I listed on Paperback Swap this did no occur.

exactly why would anyone give a negative feedback for a book mailed out the day it was requested. The book was exactly what was asked for. It was in good shape. It arrived four days after mailing and negative feedback was given for it. Why? The book was listed properly by the upc code and it was a well known book. I mailed it in a secured vinyl envelope.

I noticed also that the person had ordered a second copy and left negative feedback for that person as well.

Why are people who are obviously unable to select the book that they want allowed to leave negative feedback in conditions such as this? Exactly how was negative feedback earned in this situation?

Bookmooch is a good service but it definitely has flaws. I have had people request a book, I accept and tell them the book will be mailed out the next day and when I come back on to mark it as "sent", they have cancelled the request..just to get a free book and get their point back. When I asked about it they say they just wanted the book and could use their point over and over again and do the same thing to get their book. Since the book request was cancelled, I could not leave any feedback. There are always thieves out there...even to get a free book.

It makes me want to leave bookmooch and throw away the books I have listed.

Does anyone know what classifies a book as a related edition? I have recently added a book to my inventory & mine is the only one available. However, there are over 30 other editions (same author & title) where this is on other people's wish lists, but I have checked & cannot find this listed as a related edition on any of the other wish lists.

Royal Mail price increases

Just in case any UK members did not know, the Royal Mail have been 'adjusting' their prices and criteria again. Packets no longer exist: everything is now a small, medium or large parcel but you can now choose first or second class. Printed paper rate for surface mail no longer exists with all packages being classed as parcels.
From what I can make out (but I only looked for a few minutes) there will be will be a bigger monetary increase to send domestically than internationally but I suppose, as always, it depends on how many you send, obviously the weight but now more importantly the dimensions of the parcel.

I am getting really frustrated with people that wont answer your mooch. They just let it sit there. What I have been doing is wait 1 month then I remind them. If nothing then after 1 more month I send them an email. If they still dont get back to me I cancel. I have a very long list of books I have mooched and am waiting. Im a collector of authors and would really like some answers. I understand we all have lives but at least accept or deny the mooch so we can move on from there. any ideas on this? Thanks, Laura

I recently posted the following on John's Blog and realizes it might be more appropriate to post here. I am very upset at the ridiculous increase in the cost of shipping overseas from the U.S. Up to US$23.95 for a pre-pack capable of holding 2 or 3 PBs. While I ramble a bit, I am also interested in any thoughts others have that would allow for shipping books internationally at a reasonable price, say US$4 per book.

I've been a member for a few years and have enthusiastically shipped my "used" books all over the world. I accumulated a lot of points doing that proving that altruism is just another name for self-interest.(Grin)

I am now back in the U.S. and was very disappointed to discover that the Int'l Priority pack has gone up to $23.95. I would ship my U.S. based PBs in a priority pack and could always get 2 and somtimes three in the envelope which cost U.S.$12 or 13.95.

I just posted the folowing on my profile page:

"Unfortunately, thanks to the political football we in the U.S. call the U.S. Postal Service (the service part is an oxymoron) I will no longer pay the ridiculous charges to send books overseas. Last year, a Priority Mail Pack, good to hold 2 or 3 PBs, was US$12.95. In January it went up to US$23.95. In most parts of the world, one can buy new PBs or used HCs cheaper. While this site is more than just a way to get books for a reasonable cost, US$8 to US$12 per used PB book is beyond reasonable. Methinks, I see a business opportunity here for someone far younger than myself, shipping books and other heavy weight items via surface and then re-distributing them at various points using local postal services or couriers.

I feel sad about this development since I made some good Bookmooch Friends around the world by shipping them books from Hong Kong which is still civilized enough to handle surface shipping at a reasonable cost. Reminds me of the song, "Those Were the Days"."

It might motivate some U.S. members if the moochee received 6 points
for a book shipped internationally from there. I know there are other places in the world where Int'l postage is even greater and perhaps these places could be included. Another possibility would be to accumulate books in some less expensive spot like Hong KOng and re-ship them. I wish I had thought of this before I relocated back to the U.S.

Unfortunately as my good friend Dick Gottlieb, President and founder of Grey House Publishers, said to me recently, "I seem to be involved in a dying industry, which may be appropriate as I celebrate my 74th birthday."

Whatever the problems, I hope Bookmooch can continue to be a global organization.

I also hope others who read this might have their own take on the issue, if they see it as an issue.

I was searching for an author this morning, and there were three books available to mooch. Because they were overseas I thought I would add the books to my wish list and wait. I added those titles, and others by the same author and later went back to my wishlist. It did not indicate that those two titles were available to mooch.

But they were still available, and I decided I would get them from overseas, and sent a request to the person. He sent me permission to mooch. When I went to my wish list the books still didn't say there were available and I had to track them down again. It did say they were on hold for me, and I was able to get them.

Does this mean that my wish list may not tell me that copies of books are available to mooch??? Has something changed in the wishlist process?

Someone mooched a book from me that I never owned. I don't know how it got on my inventory. This happened a few months ago and I just scratched my head and moved on. This is the second rejection I had to do for this reason. Does anyone have any idea of what is happening? I am very careful when I add inventory.

I live in Hong Kong and therefore post most of my books internationally by surface mail to save costs. I warn moochers in advance I do this and ask them to be patient. However I've been getting a fair number of books marked lost recently as moochers just aren't patient. I don't believe all these books really have been lost. This suspicion was confirmed to me recently when after marking a book as lost a user came back to me to say it had later arrived. I really want to leave feedback on this transaction so other members can see the book was sent, but when I click the feedback button I get a message saying "no feedback with this ID".

My profile is looking a bit of a mess due to these books marked lost - anyone any ideas what I can do, other than spending more to post air mail in future?

Can anyone tell me what happens if two people have the same id? I have found one case where I cannot put the correct id into the browse member box and find them, only a member who joined and never mooched with the same id, although I have found the member by going through the location list.
Will messages reach her or the dead account?

How long must an account be on vacation before it can be considered moribund, if not actually dead? I have on occasion been away for as long as 4 months, but I go back every so often to check on messages. Perhaps John can set up an automatic "are you still with us?" message to accounts in a coma for more than, say, 200 days? Then, if no reply is received after a decent interval -- a month perhaps? -- the corpse can be buried. This would also, inter alia, clear the wishlists for live wishers.

Has anyone else been having problems with loading the BMooch pages?

I give up after waiting for the pages to load after 2 minutes. This has been going on for a few months and my reason for not mooching at all. I have a very high speed internet connection, so that can't be it.

Why do some people get points (1/10th) for acknowledging receipt of a book while others do not

It seems to us that those people take advantage of those that do not in a sense that they themselves do not acknowledge having received books

We were wondering as this has happened to us twice already, we have to hound those people to acknowledge having received their book from us

I mooched three books from the same person who accepted my points and said they had posted all three books. Two arrived, but one didn't so I emailed the book owner to ask when they had posted the third book. The reply was that they had sent the two books and that I had received the ones I had mooched. When I disputed this I was told that the third book didn't exist!! I obviously had a very clear record of the original mooch, so I asked for my mooch point back as it would appear they had listed the same book twice on their inventory with a slightly different title. I was then informed that I couldn't have my point back until the 12th Dec. so obviously they are claiming the book is 'lost'. I would have been quite happy to accept an apology as these things happen but to claim that they had actually sent the non-existant book is rather naughty! Can you please help?

On this past October 8th I ordered a copy of West Side Story. I received it very promptly and recorded the receipt while notifying the sender. The book somehow, however, duplicated itself in my "Books waiting to receive" section and the duplicate did not disappear when the original did. How do I get rid of the duplicate? (There is no cancel option.) If I just let it run out or just mark it as received what will happen? Will it show up as a book sent / received again for both of us?

I requested a newly listed book yesterday and quickly received an email indicating that the book's owner had rejected the request almost immediately. The reason given was "Very sorry, just reactivated this account and had not removed all of the books listed when you requested this. Have to reject the request, sadly." This sounds to me pretty much like "I no longer have this book," which BookMooch says is not an acceptable excuse. I clicked the link in the email that should have taken me to a place from which I could leave feedback for the transaction, but the page repeatedly stopped downloading before any possibility for feedback appeared. So I went to my member history, hoping to be able to leave feedback from there, and found that the transaction already had feedback - a +1 and an appreciative comment I had put on the next previous book I received. When I looked at my earlier history, it turns out that the same thing has apparently automatically happened, without my noticing it, for any book I requested that has been rejected, cancelled or lost.

Has anyone else had this problem, and is there anyway to fix it? This certainly isn't the kind of feedback I'd want to leave on record for these transactions. I have emailed BM but I realize that they're very busy, so I thought I'd ask here.

As the post office prepares for another round of postage increases in 2013 it once again is considering the elimination of media mail as a method of shipping. While it has never managed to do so in the past, this year it is a much more serious threat considering the usps budget deficit. I can only imagine what such an elimination will do to this site if we must all mail books via parcel post or priority mail.

I would just like to remind moochees to consider some kind of inside plastic wrap when mailing a book. Newspaper plastic sleeves are excellent; just ask friends to save them for you. Plastic grocery bags work well and are also free.

On the otherhand, please look under the dust jacket, etc. before you mail a book. When a book arrives in an intact and dry package but the book shows signs of having been exposed to moisture ????

It is supposed to be "Drood" by Dan Simmons, but for some reason the title and author fields are blank. Does it look the same way to everyone else, or is it just an error on my end? I used the isbn feature to add the book, so it seems like that isbn number is somehow linked to an incomplete book record?

Any way I can fix this?

I've just received an email message from the creator of Readers United book swap site (it must have been set to all the RU members), and there's also a message posted on the site. Apparently, RU is closing down, new requests are no longer allowed.

If you have any unspent points at RU, you should reply or email the owner, as he says, if there's a significant demand, he will try to arrange to transfer those points to some other book swap site.

It would be great to be able to actually get some books for those points.

I've always found everyone on here really lovely, but a recent experience has left me concerned. i'd like other moochers input on what SHOULD have happened.
I do not want to share the details but I am not often on my PC anymore, so while I see and respond to messages I do not always do 'admin' such as marking books sent promptly. I thought that taking the time to send the book was more important than taking the time to mark it sent.

I had a request from someone who is moving and wanted me to send the book quickly. I accepted the mooch that day saying I would send the book the following day.
I didn't mark it as sent once I posted it adn I didn't email her to say it had gone.
The next thing I know she has cancelled the request, and left negative feedback. She did not communicate or ask me if I had sent the book as I said I would.
I was very abrupt in my email to her because I am short on time, adn was very upset to be treated like that.
She changed her feedback to neutral but left a sarcastic/snarky comment instead about me.

Was I unreasonable to not make it sent or email her? I thought the action of sending it was more important, but it seems she expected me to confirm it was sent, as well as confirm that i would send it.

Was I unreasonable to expect her to communicate before cancelling the trade, given how much hastle it si to rearrange the trade?

I've had to reject a request for it because it went back on my shelf, and someone else requested it. Do they get a chance to leave negative feedback too now?

(I've put it back on my shelf, but reserved it for the lady I sent it to)

What do we do if the book arrives after she has moved (France to America) or is returned to me?

TBH I have a lot on in my life that I don't want to share with random strangers on trading sites, and I feel very put off by the way this moocher has behaved.

Please restore my faith in this site as I have alot of credits and don't want to give up on it, but don't have the time or energy for dealing with this kind of thing.

Serial killers, surreal killers, cereal killers

I wish someone could declare a 29 year moratorium on serial killers.(Why 29? because I am 77 and by that time I'l be either dead or not reading.) In fiction, there is nothing more boring. Query: are terrorists counted as serial killers? They should be. Surreal killers can be fun if they come up with new and original ways of murdering people. This does not mean more gruesome or more gross. Cereal killers smother their victims in rice pudding or oatmeal, inter alia.

Hi everyone, I am relatively new to bookmooch and I was hoping I could ask a question and that this was the right spot to do it in. My question is how come when you go to recommendations that you might like, all of the books it recommends cannot be shipped to my country. In fact most of them are from Germany. Is there I way I can filter them out by my country or perhaps get better recommendations.

Is there any interest in lending eBooks on BookMooch?

I have several Kindle eBooks that I am able and willing to lend. According to Amazon, I can send these titles for a period of 14 days to anyone with an email address. The eBooks can be read on a Kindle or a device that has a Kindle application (you can download it for free). I can only loan the titles once, and not all my books are eligible for lending, but I'm willing to share. I don't care about points or anything like that. It would help save on postage, especially for international members.

I thought it couldn't hurt to suggest a place on BookMooch to swap eBooks. Thanks for hearing me out.

Why does BookMooch sometimes think I am in Italy?

When I search, occasionally (like this morning and last night) all the tabs and language on the page converts to Italian, and it I click on the "My Country" tab (it's in Italian, but I figured out Mi Paese) then it shows books in Italy only, even though I'm in Australia. And then after a few searches, it jumps back to English, or not. Some months back it was happening in French. A bug?
I will add it seems to happen when I search for Charlaine Harris and then click on My Country, in particular.

Browsing moochable books

Hi! I wonder if anyone have a great tip to find moochable books published in a particular language.

In my case, I am looking for any Japanese books. I go to "Browse" and choose Japanese as "Language". I browse book titles and look for the ones I may be interested in to mooch. The problem is that majority of those books are unmoochable from my country. Unless I click every single book I am interested in, I cannot see whether moochable from my country or not. The worst part is that I have to repeat these tasks every time I look around for Japanese books, like once a month or so. I tried "advanced search", but it requires a book title.

I am hoping that there is actually an easier way to browse moochable books published in a specific language. Thanks for your suggestion in advance:)

Hi,

I'm not sure what to do about this, so I'm checking with the hive mind. There's a book on my wishlist in China, and the member has their account set to "ask first". So, I emailed, and over the course of several emails, it became clear that he doesn't want to send the book. It is still listed in his inventory, and I'm not sure that he really understands the concept of bookmooch due to the language barrier. I've emailed tech support with no response, and as I said, the book is still appearing. I'd feel weird mooching it, knowing he doesn't want to send. Any thoughts on how to handle this? Thanks!

Hi!

I am a new user to Bookmooch (about 3 weeks) and have already spent over 20 dollars in postage to send out multiple books on my list. I continue to add books to my inventory, and have a couple of outstanding requests right now. Currently, I have received 0 of the 4 or 5 books that I have requested, with either no responses, or responses citing that there will be a delay. I feel bad making the couple of my outstanding requesters wait for a response, but I hesitate to spend any more money sending out books when I have yet to receive even 1 back. I am thinking that things will begin evening out with a little more time, but I am wondering if any other new users have had this same issue? At this point, I am holding off on adding any new books into my inventory until i begin to receive some of my requests.

I need help with consolidating my inventory lists...

I now have books scattered over half a dozen websites. I am trying to pull together a list of my inventory URLs so people can browse everything together. So far, PBS and Swap.com have foiled my attempts to get a URL of just my inventory page. They seem to use generic URLs which point you to an empty form if you're not logged in, but your own inventory if you are.

Is there a solution for this that I'm missing?

I would be OK with adding future books to LibraryThing, but it's a pain in the kiester to spend the time and effort keeping the catalog updated every time someone requests a book from me.

Score one for BookMooch. At least I can point people to my inventory here and say "this is what I have." I used to maintain a single webpage with a list of $1.00 books for sale or trade, but I'm not really interested in doing that anymore, either.

Is adding my PBS/Swap inventory to LibraryThing the most expedient solution?
Ideas?

Hi,
I've wanted to write this a number of times, and now is another one of these times.

I'm in Europe (Denmark) and most often the books that I'd like to mooch are located in the US.
Very often, people in the US only send books within their country.

But how fortunate that we have the angel network who will help out.

The only problem is that when I find a book I'd like to mooch from a person in, e.g. the US I can't reserve it.
SO - I write the book owner about the condition of the book (because I can't even access the "mooch" page to see condition notes if the book owner doesn't ship internationally) and if it's a book I really, really want I do an angel request right away, otherwise I wait for a reply from the book owner.

Well, the last couple of times, before I get an answer back from the book owner, the book has been mooched by someone else.

Wouldn't it be possible to make a function to reserve a book just the way it works when a book owner has "ask me first" - so that there would be time to find an angel before someone else mooches the book?

Today is John Buckman's birthday. I know many here are grateful to him for all the time and effort he puts into Bookmooch.

The bookmoochers who run the Bookmooch Journal Library voluntarily have been looking at a possible way of raising the revenue needed to run the journalling library - a Wordpress site with its own address and the two upgrade fees required annually. Also we would like to contribute to the running of Bookmooch without which the journalling arm would not exist.
The possibility of some journals being published was raised, but there are huge logistic problems in obtaining retrospective permission from all who made entries in existing journals, and also a reluctance to damage the freedom some feel to express things within the BM community that nevertheless they would not want to see published for general consumption.

So we decided to trial a journal designed for possible publication, and to collect the entries for it by email so that the necessary legal releases are in place when the entries are collected.
Our first publishable venture is to be called "BMJournal The wonders of Bookmooch" . It should include things bookmoochers particularly like about Bookmooch.

Our possible wording will be:

This is a bookmooch journal, which is being assembled by inviting entries from Bookmooch members by email.
The object is to produce a journal which can be printed and made available for sale.
Any proceeds would go to bookmooch towards running costs.

For this to work BEFORE adding your entry YOU must agree:
1)Anything (including, poems, words, and pictures) you offer as an entry for the journal
is your own work without any outstanding copyright issues.
2)You agree not to make any claims against bookmooch or it's owner.
3)You authorise publication of your work without claim for financial recompense.

{Because it will be assembled by email it will not be possible to get people to sign, but we could ask them to append a message such as:
1) I certify that my entry is my own work and no part of it is subject to copyright.
2) I agree to allow Bookmooch and any person it appoints to use my entry as they wish.
3) I authorise publication of my entry without financial claim by me.}

Any help with this wording, and any offers to participate in it (it would be not just for regular journallers to contribute to but all Bookmoochers) would be most gratefully received. Please contact me at bmjournals@gmail.com or reply to this message here.

I am active on a few other bookswapping sites also (okay, not so active, but once in a great great while I am on bookcrossing or paperbackswap or librarything), so it may not be an issue specific to or solely on this site, or I could be confuzzled.

Folks who do pay your postage, you have good karma. Thank you.
For those of you who do not, you make me sad because then I have to pay the postman. I appreciate everyone who lists their books and being able use this site, but please be considerate of other users. If it is a financial issue, maybe you should take a break from the site and make good use of your local library.

Since I'm fairly new here, I'm not sure this is the right place but here goes;
I've sent out several dozen books and there are a few who just seem unwilling to acknowledge having receiced books even though they have been received. I know this since I send most books out via "Priority Mail" and am notified by the post office when the books are received.
Why would people be so rude?

Salutations!

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but maybe someone can point me in the right direction.

I received a request to mail to Canada and accepted - I know I was dragging my feet to mail but I live in the country and the post office is 30 miles away.

As luck would have it I mailed it this morning and I came home to find that the moocher cancelled her request. :(

Like I said I know I was slow but she didn't even send a reminder before cancelling. I emailed to let her know we crossed paths a little bit and the book was already sent, but what happens now? Is there anything I can do to get my points back?

In all my time on Bookmooch, i've had problems with Bookmooch's way of handling titles. If you add a specific edition of a book, it can happen that other versions of those books don't appear as moochable, even if it's basically the same book (just another version).

Now, I found a way around that. I imported my entire wishlist into Librarything and then set one of my columns there to show which of those books are available on Bookmooch. All of a sudden I found out that quite a lot of books that have been on my wishlist for years are actually available. Contrary to BookMooch, Librarything doesn't make any distinction between language (which is annoying), but also not between editions. You get to see all the versions that are available to mooch!

People with a Librarything-account should try it. For me, it was a reason to not longer update my wishlist on Bookmooch. I keep everything up-to-date on Librarything now.

I was able to book a room from the Sioux City Public Library for free. On Saturday, I am hosting a Sioux City book swap for 2 hours and a half. The library is providing tables for the books. How many books people bring is how many books they get in return. It is even on the library's main page in their events column. I can't wait!

I've asked at least 5 people for a book, Invisible Prey by John Sanford, and nobody responds. Or they say they'll send it and they never do. What is with that? If you no longer have the book, why not just say so, and if you've dropped out, then why stay on?

I've sent nearly 500 books--that adds up to a lot of moola. How about sending what you say you will send??

That is what makes this group work, right?

Received a book I canceled.

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this question. I requested a book and it was accepted. I am not picky about waiting for books, but the book had not been sent over a month a half. I reminded the person but didn't get a response, so I canceled the mooch. Today, I received the book in the mail. I am kind of disappointed that I have to pay to ship the book back. I would normally just keep it and try and give a point back to the person (which I am not sure how to do), but the book is in really bad condition (which wasn't stated). It has dirt, grease, and food marks all over it. What would be the best thing to do in this situation.

Please could someone tell me approximately how long it takes for a book to get from Canada to the US? I realize that the time might vary considerably depending on the post offices at each end and whether it got hung up in Customs. Is a month long enoiugh to wait before figuring that it's lost?

I am going to Tanzania
for about 3 months at the beginning of June, and accessing the internet can be a problem.
Three questions:
1)I have about 25 books to send out and almost as many that I have mooched (most on their way, others only "accepted"). I almost never refuse a mooch, no matter where, but I will not be able to attend to any more books. Is there a way to suspend/freeze my inventory temporarily, until I return. I would hate to have to redo the whole list.
2) If I put my account "on vacation", will I still be able to acknowledge receipt of mooched books? I imagine some of these books will arrive while I am still here, but what of books that arrive in my absence?
3) If my account is on vacation, can I still access the forums?

I look forward to advice from my good friends who always come up with helpful suggestions.

I, and probably many other members from Greece, would appreciate it if the search function worked for the Greek language. Or if we could add books to our catalog in such a way that they can show up in this list http://bookmooch.com/language/Greek .

Searching for available books in Greek (non-Latin alphabet) on Bookmooch is hard.
When entering a search term in the Greek alphabet in the search field, no results are ever found, even if the book exists on BM.
Example: The Greek edition of Paul Coelho's Veronica Decides to Die http://bookmooch.co.uk/detail/9601401237 . I enter the search term ��̽�� (Veronica) and this is the result http://bookmooch.com/s/%CE%92%CE%B5%CF%81%CF%8C%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%B1 .
So the only way I know of looking for books in Greek is to "manually" browse the listings here http://bookmooch.com/language/Greek or http://bookmooch.com/m/country/GR (this second one is non-intuitive, as it includes books in English available in Greece, and doesn't include books in Greek available by members located elsewhere).

Has the "Hand-enter a book" form changed recently? I seem to remember a field where I could add "Greek" to the book's details, and I don't see that option anymore.
When entering a book to the BM catalog from here
http://bookmooch.com/m/add_manually , how can we indicate that it is a Greek language edition, so that it shows up on this list http://bookmooch.com/language/Greek ?

What are the thoughts on people sending religious tracts etc with books? I've received tracts once before and mentioned it in the rating. I marked a book received yesterday and upon closer inspection today it was filled with scentsy order forms. Sigh. Its just annoying. I don't send my mooches with my testimony tracts, because its disrespectful. That's all, just a vent.

Many of the books on my wishlist never turn up on BookMooch. That's OK, I understand how it works.

SOme of these books are in my local public library. I'd love to be able to export the list and carry the list to the library to look the books up and to keep it in the car for when I'm in second hand bookshops.

I don't know where else to post this, I have 25 mooch requests that I accepted with the proviso that the books would only go out after Passover/Easter (and I just OK's a couple of overease mooches*). So all of you patiently awaiting my books, be of good cheer, the books will all go out this week, most of them -- if not all -- by air mail. Thanks for your consideration.

*P.S. I don't always remember to whom I expressed a willingness to send books abroad. I wish there were some way of listing these, there is no indication in the inventory, and if I forget and remove such a book for alternative disposition, it can lead to embarassment, at the very least. Any suggestons?

I sent out a bulk mailing on request now the moocher will not respond

I was requested to send out a bulk mailing. No problem, I have sent out several books at a time with no problems. However, well over a month ago 24 books were requested. I had 23 of them still available, so I sent them. I had e-mailed her before the mailing and she responded quickly. Now, since the mailing, there is no repsonse. I can't believe she has not recieved them, but she won't respond to my e-mails now or the reminders. With every reminder it re-sets the date to mark as lost.

I also saw that after 6 weeks of no response they are marked by BM, as what I don't recall.

My other problem is that since there are so many books, if I mark them as lost it will look bad on my record. She also wanted me to just send her many more books without listing them and let her know how many so she could just transfer the points to me and save 'me' the effort of listing and marking them separately. I'm glad I did not do this.

Please give me feedback. Should I contact BM directly? I hate to bother the admin., but she also shouldn't be able to do this to a person who sent her several books in good faith.

Help! I don't know whether this is in my computer or a bug in the BookMooch system, but books that I have sent and have been received continue to appear on my pending page. Also, when I try to acknolege receipt of books, the books remain on my pending page.
I checked my history and there the listing is OK. I also tried turning off my computer and turning it on again.
Any bright ideas? Any ideas?

Hi all-

I have a mooch situation that I'm not sure how to resolve. I would, however, like to get it resolved so that it stops showing on my "pending" page.

I requested a book back in August 2011, and immediately got a notification that the email had bounced. Regardless, the owner responded that she'd send it within a few days. I replied to say that a delay is no problem; I'm busy with school and have tons of books to read anyway.

I heard nothing until December, when the owner marked the book as "sent." The message she sent along with the "sent" notification said "I really really think I sent this book to you. If not be sure to remind me to search for it." I had a bad feeling about this. It seems disorganized. I shrugged it off and waited to see if the book appeared in my mailbox.

I have not received the book. I have attempted to email the user, but apparently that was through the BookMooch email system, because I have no record of it in my email box. I have heard nothing back from the user.

I haven't marked the book as received or lost because I don't know what to do. It would be a lie to mark the book as "received," because I haven't received anything, yet I would be able to leave feedback that way. It would also be inaccurate to mark the book as "lost," because it wasn't lost in the mail. It never even made it to the mail!

What do you all suggest that I do?

In many countries books are relatively expensive and the choice far more limited then say the UK. However the number of BookMooch members in these countries is relatively small (http://bookmooch.com/m/country).

A limiting factor on international bookmooching is the cost of postage, this causes people in places where books are less expensive not to send books overseas.

Here is an idea that may work:

Say Bob in Australia wants to read "A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini" he could add this book to the International book linker forum saying:
"
Please buy this book in your country and once you have finished reading it I will give you the postage plus 1/4 the cost of the book to send he book to me.
"

Then if the moocher in say the UK accepts this offer they could buy the book from amazon for �2.79 read it then contact the Bob to say that they require �4.26 for airmail or �2.64 for surface mail plus �0.70. Bob could pay this with PayPal and the book is sent to Austrilia.

Is this a good or bad idea? Would you give it a try?

It's getting spammed mercilessly, probably by spambots. Just about everything that's been added in at least the last couple of months, including malicious changes to some useful content, is junk.

Hi All,

I need some advice.

A book came up recently on my mooch list. I may have misread the information, which said it was a "related" edition to the one I had on the wishlist, which was the german version.

BUT-when I mooched it, I did ASK the owner if it was the german version when I mooched it. He didn't respond, he just sent the book.

Now I have an unneeded, and probably not easy to get rid of, duplicate of a book.

Should I ask for my point back because he didn't bother to read my note on the mooch?
Should I eat the point, since I suppose I could have emailed him before mooching it to ask? (The main reason I don't do that anymore, is that when it *was* a book I wanted, by not mooching it immediately, I lost out on the book.)

I'm in a quandary about what to do...

It's possible I discussed this point before, but recently I added a lot of books in my inventory. dutch books, that have to be hand-entered, even though there are some great titles there (Visit from the Goon Squad e.g.). The stupid thing is that, because I've hand-entered these books, they don't appear in the list when you browse through the Dutch books. It's annoying, cause now people have to accidentally end up on my profile, then check my inventory, and then find it.

There should be an easier way to do that. Just be able to set the language when you hand-enter a book (because that's mostly for non-English books, I imagine), or provide (Like Librarything.com) a Dutch database.

I send out quite a few books each week through BookMooch. I use usps's shipping assistant and provide for delivery confirmation. In order to make the moocher aware of the confirmation number I am required to type a large number into the BookMooch's confirmation email. Shipping assistant provides a box to check to then automatically send the confirmation number to the moocher if the email address is provided. Is there anyway to access the email addresses of moochers to make this process easier?

I'm just curious how other BMers handle giving feedback. Following the "guidelines", I've given negative feedback a few times, either when a book in the country is rejected for either (a) no reason at all (though I do ask) or (b) if they "no longer have it" (which is the specific example given in the guidelines), or the one time I received a book with underlined passages, drawings, notes in the margins, etc. without prior notice. When someone rejects a mooch saying that they accidentally listed it as Inventory rather than Wishlist, no problem, it happens.

Yet I have been jumped on for giving negative feedback, with surprising hostility, which leaves me to wonder what is the point of my leaving feedback at all if it's not going to be honest?

Do others out there give negative feedback according to the purpose outlined? And, if so, have you had similar experiences?

If someone has asked me to send a book overseas, and I say OK, sometimes that's the last I hear of it. When I come across lapsd reservatons and I cancel them, it would be useful if that book would be listed in "recently added book, so that other people could mooch it. Or is this impractical and/or impracticable?

Ok, here's my problem before I ask my question. I had to delay a number of mooches due to financial problems. I wanted to honor the mooch request I just had to wait till I have the extra money to do so. By the time I sent some books out the mooches accounts became Inactive. I waited and sent them reminders as soon as BookMooch allowed me, quite a few times. However some of them never responded. I therefore went ahead and marked those books as Lost since I didn't know what to do after they sat for months in my Pending Mooches. Is there some way to mark the books differently??? I feel it looks negatively on my history that I have so many books that I sent that were lost since they could have reached their destination just were never marked as such by the Inactive User.

Sorry if I am repeating a question. I couldn't find it anywhere and it's been bothering me. Thank.

Hello everyone,
Various times during my time using BM, I have received mooches in wrapping that has fallen apart before getting to me. Sometimes the books have been completely rewrapped by Royal Mail, usually when entering the UK, other times not. Usually the books aren't damaged, but I'd rather people wrapped their mooches more thoroughly. All the damaged packaging has been either thin paper with no packaging inside or sometimes the US flat rate envelopes.

So, what do you do if the packaging is damaged? Do you mention it to the moocher who sent it to you? Leave +0 or -1 feedback? Ignore it? I've mentioned it to the moocher in this instance because it was very thin paper and nothing else, sent internationally.

I had someone not leave me positive feedback because they did not look up information about the book before they put it on their wishlist. They said that I am responsible for letting them know that the book was a comic book. It was definitely the book that they were mooching and it was in perfect condition. I don't have control over what information Bookmooch puts on the website and personally look books up on Amazon and read several reviews before I decide whether or not I want something. Is this person in the wrong for not making themselves aware of the contents of the book they put on their wishlist or should I start messaging a description of every book's content out when I receive a mooch?

Can anyone help me with this one please.

A book flashed up on my wishlist, tried to mooch it, but couldn't because it was to usa only. I have a usa angel, so tried to get in touch with the owner to ask them to reserve it for her for me, but could not find any way of contacting her, so of course lost the book by the time I'd contacted my angel. I tried clicking on everything on the page, no luck. typed the book owner's i.d.? in search, but it came up no such member. (I checked that I'd typed it in precisely as printed on the book page, and tried several times without success) Tried "unmoochable" etc. but still no result. How do I trace such a book owner so I can email? Advice please, thanks, Rose.

I just logged in to find the thread, so that I could post a general thank-you to the people that offered advice. Now I can't find my thread anywhere. I tried looking under "new messages in the last 14 days" and I tried looking under "your messages" to show everything I have ever posted in the forums. It seems to be gone! Mysterious. Dang it. I wanted to re-read the comments because I didn't write down the name of the charity that someone suggested I look into. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Lack of good books

So I have over 7 points....and I can't even find anything to spend them on! It's so frustrating. First of all bookmooch needs a better way of organizing it's books. For example is i search by topic, say I choose "home & garden", I get "the cat who came for christmas"...a fictional story about a cat! How does that possibly fit into home and garden? If I search "most available" it comes up with Interview with the vampire....and then tells me there is only 1 of it. How is that most available??? And if you actually type in the title of a book you want it comes up with like 6 different copies (of course none of them are actually moochable) and you have to individually add each one to you wish list.

This site is just so frustrating! Does anyone else feel this way? How do you possibly find the books you want on here?

Someone sends a "will you sent to my country" request. I say OK, but I will be away for a month (or whatever, I'm on the move a lot). No reply, but the book is marked reserved, so no one else can mooch it. Couldn't the moocher/requester remove his/her imprint and release the captive book for others who might want it? Or does an "expired" reservation free the book?

Reading Challenges

I just started a reading challenge that I found on Goodreads (Seasonal Reading Challenge is the name of the group). It is around 80 books for the 91 days from December 1 to February 29, but I don't really read that fast. I just finished my 50th book this year, so my pace has been about 1 per week. I like the tasks though, so I am giving it a try to see how many points I can get. Tasks include Read a book with a cover that is mostly blue, black and/or white and Read a book with "Once" "Upon" or "Time" in the title. Points range from 5-20 points for one book tasks and 15-50 for multiple book tasks.

When I searched for reading challenges, it was mostly focused on kids and teens and I didn't find much that was geared toward adults. Does anyone know of any other places I can find challenges like this that are for adults, topical (i.e. not just X number of books or X number of pages) and fun as well?

Hi, nothing at all to do with books, but thought I'd pass on a little wrinkle I use for displaying my Christmas cards - like most of you book-lovers I guess, I have shelves of rows of books all around my living room. I display my cards neatly and easily by slipping the back half of the card between the spines of the books, leaving the picture part covering the spines of 3/4 books.(depending on thickness) If the front flaps loose (usually on thin cards, I space it so it just overlaps the front of the card to the right and put a tiny touch of bluetack between them
It looks really festive, and is so easy. It only works with cards with a vertical fold though, unless you dont mind displaying your cards sideways up.

My post was stolen last week and I think there were a couple of parcels in it (why else would anyone bother stealing my post).

I had several mooches which were marked as posted to me before this happened and which I have not received.

I am thinking of marking all of these outstanding mooches as received since I have no way of knowing which parcels were in the stolen post.

Is it reasonable to do this or should I wait and then mark the ones that don't turn up in the mean time as lost?

I'm not sure if this is me being dense or a flaw in the search engine, but if I search for an author with initials in their name (e.g. J.K. Rowling) then the search seems to ignore the J and K and show every author with the name "Rowling". For authors like L.J. Smith this comes up with a heck of a lot of results!

I've tried putting the name in speechmark and removing the full stops, but nothing seems to help, can anybody help me?

I've actually got two issues here and hope someone can help me.

1) When I try to find books listed in my country (Ireland), I select the country and then I get several pages of books, all alphabetized individually, i.e. each page has an author starting with A at the top and ends with one with W or Y. I seem to remember this was different a long time ago, I initially assumed it was a bug but it hasn't been mentioned anywhere nor has it been fixed. It makes just browsing through your own country's books very cumbersome and annoying (one author's books could be listed on several different pages)

2) I tried to find Charles Dickens books from my own country today, trying not to spend too many points. So I search for Dickens and then use the option "my country" at the top of the results. I get a sizable list of books - none of which are actually located in Ireland. All of the entries, however, have at least one copy located in the UK. This is the first time this has happened to me and I know for a fact that previously UK didn't come up if searching specifically for books located within my country. Since when has Ireland been included in the UK? Unless I have missed some crucial news - Mooches between UK & Ireland are regarded as international and so they should, seeing that I'm paying international postage from Ireland (same as sending to US or anywhere else in the world).

I'm a bit confused now, anyone got any advice?

Incorrect book listing how to fix?

I'm trying to post a book here. It's Bled Dry by Erin McCarthy ISBN-10: 0739481630
ISBN-13: 978-0739481639 on paperbackswap it comes up with that ISBN as the correct book. Here it's listed as You Only Get Better. But when you click on the title link it brings up totally different books. When I look the ISBN up on Amazon it brings up a picture of Bled Dry but the title part say You Only Get Better. The reviews and info are all for Bled Dry.

Does this make any sense? I emailed Amazon about it but I don't know if they'll do anything.

My bio clearly states (several times) "Ask me first." Mostly they do, but now someone is mooching a book from very far, without asking whether I am willing to send to that country. I thought this notice would appear automatically on interantional mooches, but it has either been ignored, or it is not automatic, after all. I also ask for overseas moochers to mooch more than one book. This is also ignored. I understand that I have the right to reject an international mooch without explnation; Heaven knows, I have had plenty of refusals of my international requests. I don't question these rejections, and I should have the right to decide whether I am willing to send overseas or not.

I have received a number of notifications that books on my WL were available, but on mooching them I found that the owners would not send to my country. That is their privilege, but the notification stays on the WL, and presumable precludes me from being notified should a moochable edition of the specific book come along -- or am I mistaken? Also, I was offered a book in another language than the ones I prefer , so how do I get rid of the alternative version without cancelling the wish listing?

I mooched a book from someone yesterday, and noticed that she had another book I wanted in her inventory, so mooched that also. This morning, I received a message to say that the first book had been sent - I was curious as to why she hadn't sent them together. And the book isn't on my pending! So I searched for the book details - it is listed as having been sent to me by a completely different moocher, but isn't on my pending list and I have had no emails to say "accepted" or "sent" from her - nothing in my spam folder, either! How can it be on her "sent" list and not on mine? Any clues?

Edited to add - it is now on my pending! Don't know where it was hiding, but ignore everything I just said ...

I hated using that site since I had to give my personal info to get the books I wanted so only used that site when absolutely necessary (I subsequently traded those books collected here, heh) but I must admit I did get some good finds over there.

When moochers take forever to mark a book received;, it looks bad for the sender

When I order a book it would be nice to see if a member is prompt or takes forever to send a book, but the details section is misleading.

I always send books out promptly, compulsive thing that I am, and they almost always arrive within 2 weeks.
After the 3rd week, I email the recipient, politely inquiring if book has been received.
Most of the time I get back a message that says " oh, I forgot to mark it!" then they mark it as received.
But in the "details" section, it shows as a long period of time between
"date requested" and "date concluded".
There is no way to tell if the delay is because the sender is lax in mailing out or if recipient is lax.
Any ideas?

The Wiki and spam

The wiki has been inundated with spam again. I have removed the text of every spam page I could find (using the Recent Changes link), but is there a way to remove these pages from wiki completely? I think something needs to be done to match wiki ids with bookmooch ids and not leave the sign-ups open to just anyone.

how to add an auther when it is not included

I just entered a book "The Virgin of Small Plains" by isbn. A brief entry came up and I added it to my inventory. When I later looked at the entry I saw that it did not include the author's name, but I don't see anywhere to edit the record to add it. Am I missing something? Any ideas how this can be corrected? Do I need to delete it and add it another way?

I have two email providers. The one was using for my BookMooch transactions started giving me problems, so I switched to the alternative provider, but this one has certain disadvantages. Is there a way I can list both addresses, or is this not permitted?

So, apparently there is this "rare" bug where sometimes a book that shows up in your inventory doesn't actually show available on the book's page. After finding one such example in my inventory tonight, and then email tech support about it (and getting the response that it happens "rarely" and to just delete and re-add the book), I found two more such books in my inventory. Looking at my inventory showed the book listed, but clicking through to that book's page showed "no copies available".

So, just a little random announcement, if it's been awhile since you've gone through your inventory...

I recently cancelled a mooch because the person with the book had never responded to the request or to the two reminders I sent and it had been over a month. Sounds reasonable, right? From their lack of responses, I assumed that this was an inactive member. But now the book is showing up as available again on my wishlist, and I see that the member has actually been here recently. Is it possible that they never received my reminders somehow? Should I try again to get in touch with them? I have already spent the returned point to request a different book, but it just seems really strange that someone would never respond, and yet be an active member, and now I'm not sure what to do! Is there anything I can/should do about this? Was I right in cancelling, or should I have tried harder to contact this person?

I have a number of points built up, and I'd like to put my inventory on hold until I can use up some of my accumulated points. From what I understand, it's OK to vacation my inventory while still being an active member and and still mooching books, right? I just want to double check that this is acceptable with BookMooch rules.

I sent out 7 books to a Moocher a few weeks ago and received no indication they had been received. Yesterday, one of my parcels was returned by RM marked not called for and today another one has come back. I've emailed the Moocher a few times over the past few weeks and had no response.

I'm not prepared to spend more many on postage to send them again and don't want to mark them as Lost as they weren't. It's really put me off listing any more books here. Any advice?

I list a new book; goody! I see it is on someone's WL -- whose last visit to Bookmooch was 1542 days ago? with a 0 inventory, marked "possibly inactive." I was not aware that BM had even been in existence that long. Ought not there be a limit on how long one can remain on vacation? Say, a year or so, with an option for the "inactive" member to call in and say, yes, I'm still here, even without any other action.
All these "possibly inactive" files are just so much unnecessary clutter. Please John, come up with something.

This is a rant!

Why can't people enter their postal address in their profile in such a manner that it can be copied and pasted into a mailing document?

It doesn't take me too long to edit and put in the lines, put the postal town in uppercase to make mail sorting easier, etc, in order to make the label I use look as though someone cares. But why should I have to do it? Come on folks, go into your profile and look at your address. If it's not how your country's postal authorities would like it to appear, edit it!

Hi guys,
I've just joined BookMooch, and was wondering what was the right thing to do reguarding my books.
I have several books listed for 99p on Ebay, but would like to put them on here as well. Is that allowed?
Obviously, if I got a bid on Ebay I would take the book off my Inventory, and vice versa, but there is still a chance of overlap.
I believe that I have to accept a mooch, which would give me time to get it off Ebay first...

Can anyone enlighten me?

I love bookmooch, mostly because the owner (Ron?) tends to live the way he wants the world to be. I find that very admirable and respect him greatly. I gave him a little money for two or three months but had to stop at Christmastime. I understand his need to sell advertising: he has to have an income and evidently not enough people did contribute the needed funds. No one wants advertising if intrusive but there's a valid need for some advertising and I hope the owner succeeds well with it. We certainly can't bitch about it when we don't put our money where our mouth is.

I wonder if too many people have left bookmooch and that's why I haven't had a Wish List book come up for longer than I can remember: too long, and frustrating to check every day and never get a book. Most of my 87 listed are not esoteric or arcane, just popular books from best seller lists of the last 15-20 years, including current books. If I didn't like the owner so much I would leave bookmooch as it isn't working for me nearly as well as I would like. I haven't had many books listed here lately because I don't need the points.

I won't abandon the owner or bookmooch, will always have some books listed and will continue to check my wish list daily, as well as continue to refer new people to bookmooch. I want it to grow and grow and be very successful. The owner deserves that.

What would you do?

I had a person request a book from out of the US and I told them that I wouldn't be able to send, but would hold the book until they could find an angel. Well the other day (right at the end of their time), I got the email that they had found an angel but we have been having trouble with our internet and I wasn't able to go in and change the reserved for and now today because their time had run out I get a request from another person because the time had run out. How would you solve this issue?

Books in my wishlist that are available

Lately i've noticed that though some books from my wishlist are available, they don't show up in my wishlist. I guess it has to do with different versions, (even though there is the related edition-option). I found out when i searched an author's name and saw a book show up that has been on my wishlist for years.

That way, a lot of books available out there, don't get mooched because books are not found.

I know BM is thinking of doing something about the database, and I think it's very urgent. I've said it before, but it's an awful mess that scares off people who are not regular moochers.

What do you guys think?

I have sent a message twice now to the "Technical Support Email" link, but haven't heard anything back (not even a note that said anyone had received it or was looking into it). It's probably been a couple of weeks since I sent the second message. Is there another way to get help? I know it's volunteers, so maybe I'm not waiting long enough?

Here's what I was asking about. My "member history" page is a little wonky. http://bookmooch.com/m/history/cindyw

If you look under Books Mooched, in the explanation column, it's a little messed up. The first one listed (Strange Bedpersons) - that is not the proper comment. That comment appears to be an exact copy of a comment that came from a different book a little further down. The "(rejected)" part of that is correct, though. If you click on Details for that book, you'll see the proper message that came with that rejection.

Also, A Big Little Life was a book that was rejected (so that part is correct), but the comment and +1 feedback was another exact copy of a different book further down. Again, if you look at the Details of this one, you'll see the proper comments.

hmmm, as I type this all up, it looks like it's the rejected ones where this is happening. Up until I checked today, there was only A Big Little Life with this problem, as Strange Bedpersons was only rejected a couple of days ago. So, maybe just having a 2nd one helps me figure out a little more about what the problem is.

Maybe I should resend my note to technical support, again, with this added info? Or is there somewhere else I could try? Or, have I just not been patient enough to hear back? Or is this something I even need to worry about? How closely do people look at that page?

This is a parallel comment to that on condition notes.
Book "reviews" are mostly picked up from the Amazon database, but if this doesn't happen, there's no information given about the book. It's easy enough to type in the synopsis from the back cover, making a book more moochable.
Perhaps the "review" label should be changed to "synopsis" or "further information about this book".

It just makes it so much easier to decide whether to mooch a book.

Perhaps I am missing a good reason why people would not take the trouble to share the condition of their books?????

This might belong somewhere else but I couldn't find another forum to put it in but I wanted to let interested people know that the USPO has a padded flat rate 9 1/2 x 12 1/2 envelope available. I found it online recently when I was researching the most economical way to send books overseas. It mystified the postal clerks at my local p.o. who had never seen it before and of course initially one had the reaction of oh, no this isn't flat rate. But he soon figured it out.

Anyway, it costs the same as the small flat rate box but the small box is too small to send a full size book and I found the padded flat rate envelope was cheaper to use for the heavier books requested from me than sending first class.

I'm no postal expert but thought I would point this product out to anyone who might want to look into using it. It was not available in the P.O. itself, I had to order online from the USPO site but delivery is free so that worked out.

Recently Wishlisted Books?

I was just browsing through the Recently Added tool...and it occurred to me that since I am one of those lucky people who has access to (literally!) thousands of books at all times, knowing what people are looking for would be really useful.

These are sort of "dump" libraries, where folks leave their books after they've read them. Naturally, the popular stuff (like The Help) that is hot at the moment, is as hard to find in my sources as anywhere else, but there's LOTS of 2nd and 3rd tier books, that I could probably list if I knew they were being sought.

I wonder if a tool like the "Recently Added Books" could be created to show the "Recently Wishlisted" books? That way those of us who haunt garage sales, flea markets, charity shops, and "take one/leave one" libraries could increase the traffic of mooched books by a lot!

Does anyone else notice that when you click on Wishlist and then sort it by Show Moochable Now it doesn't actually show all the books that are available to be Mooched by you?
I just found 3 books that I can Mooch by going through my list page by page. What's the point of sorting your list if it doesn't pick up all the books? I wish I could say it's because they were related editions or from other countries, but they weren't.
I first noticed this problem when I received an email saying a book on my wishlist was available to Mooch, and instead of going to the link through the email I logged on and sorted my wishlist. It didn't show up on my Moochable now, but it was still available through the email.
Anyone else having this issue?
