Inactive Accounts Clean-up Project : A place to keep track of which accounts we are mooching from, to post links to inactive accounts.

You never know what you'll get with inactive moochers

On a lighter note, what are the weird occurrences that have happened to you while working on this project, and trying to mooch from inactive people? Just this weekend I received a book via UPS Ground, which was a new one for me. I suspect the sender's employer paid for it, from the look of the label.

Once I had a guy write me after I'd canceled my request, saying he'd been out of town and would be happy to send the book if I still wanted it. I remooched and then he canceled the next day, saying he couldn't find the book. There have been a lot of mail delivery failures coming back to my mailbox, and plenty of non-responses. I'd say 5% end up sending the book, another 10% write and say they no longer have the book, and the rest never respond at all. I got one lady who never accepted the mooch or emailed me, yet the book arrived in my mailbox. Good thing it came fast, because I was about to cancel.

The correlation between time inactive and propensity to send doesn't seem very strong - I got a quick response from someone who hadn't been on for several years. I suspect that her inventory was obscure and no one had bothered to mooch anything.

I was just looking at my stats and I've now accumulated a ridiculous number of cancellations. That, and I've just gone over having mooched slightly more books than I've sent - which disturbs me slightly for some reason.

There seem to be two ecosystems on Bookmooch - the ecosystem of the wishlisted book, which is akin to a tank full of piranhas when some hapless victim is dropped in, and the slower backwater of those endless volumes of Stephen King and Nicholas Sparks and every series romance since ISBNs were invented. Occasionally there's a splash in there, but mostly it's as calm and boring as a bathtub.
