Reviews: Ray (USA: GA) (2014/01/27):
I loved this book. Stephen King is great at coming of age stories (The Body, Apt Pupil, etc.) While the main character is in in college when the story begins, he still has an innocence about him and he "comes of age" one summer while working at a carnival. The book is peddled as a "hard case mystery," but it is softer than most of those. It is a human story, a love story and a mystery. One thing that makes this story unique is the lingo of the "carnies" (carnival workers) that is laced throughout the dialogue. I gained a new vocabulary reading the "carny jargon." Joyland has that hint of Stephen King super-naturalness, but only a hint and it maintains the human part of the story very well. You can look forward to colorful terms like "wearing the dog", "carny from carny" and "rube hoister." Another grand thing is that it takes place in North Carolina (a welcomed departure from his comfortable Maine). The characters are well developed and (mostly) believable. Entertaining.
