The regular nurse on the cruise ship Ocean Queen was injured and hospitalized only the night before the liner was scheduled to sail on a fifteen-day trip to the West Indies. So it was that Laura Fraser, who had been working as a private duty nurse in one of New York's large East Side hospitals, was suddenly and unexpectedly offered the job of substituting for the injured R. N. and having a semi-vacation in the sun on a few hours' notice. Dazed by the turn of events, Laura prepared for the journey in a dreamy daze. The sense of startlingly agreeable good fortune was fortified when her first shipboard acquaintance turned out to be a modern Prince Charming. But accidents, illnesses and melodrama soon changed the fairy tale into something more serious and tested Laura's mettle both as a nurse and a woman. |
