The book attempts "do present "the outward forms"of abnormal personality utilizing the portraits drawn from literature. None of these protraits is a stereotyped as the ordinary case history presented to illustrate an abnormal personality. They are, however, closer to the reality of human nature, which resists oversimplified classification. It is hopes these examples from fiction will permit the reader to grasp the traditional classification of psychological disorders as they can be identified within the vivid delineation of human lives and human relationships.The literary sources of this book arise mainly from Russian, French, ENglish, German and AMerican fiction, with lesser contributions from the Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Swedish and Irish cultures. The range of selections reflects in part the fact that certain national literatures are more preoccupied than others with the exploration of psychoological motivation. "
