In my new edition, The New Conga Joy, I have distilled the single drum rhythms present in the first book down to 21 primary rhythms and a handful of others which I feel best expose the beginning drummer to the rhythmic principles underlying most African and Afro-Caribbean music–principles such as clave, upbeats, 4 against 6, downbeats, cascara, and 6/8 bell. Below each primary rhythm I have included a small list of structurally related rhythms titled "Variations." At the back of the book, you will find two drum patterns , a collection of some of my favorite rhythms in full ensemble from traditional African and Afro-Caribbean cultures. A bell/clave chart, and drum tuning information for both Congas and Djembes. All the rhythms in The New Conga Joy are displayed in an easy-to-read box notation system. |
