Ken Mitchell was known, in his profession, as a "hatchet man." He looked for trouble--anything shady, anything not quite right--in the Chemco Company's branch office books, and as a traveling auditor he had a grueling job.
There was an old adage, that "bad auditors make good thieves," and Ken's assignment was to see if this had been true in Chemco's Rockdale plant. Hatchet man Frank Tomkins had died, "accidentally," after uncovering the division manager's overloaded bank account. Tomkins had been a good man, but there was evidence that he had been bribed.
Ken didn't like any of the mess in Rockdale--but he vowed to try to clean it up. At stake were the promotion he badly wanted, and, after a threat, his own life. |
