tennantfamily (United Kingdom) (2009/03/24): Compare the health, attitudes & opportunities of the man in the street today with those of his counterpart in 1914, barely making ends meet on 30/- a week. No doubt as to the explosive changes, for good or bad, which have taken place in British society in the intervening years. This explosion was touched off by the First World War and has involved the interaction of many forces, social, economic, cultural, scientific, and political. Interaction, that is the basic concern of the historian: films, novels, poems, pogo sticks, and bingo. as well as the major crises of war and peace, have all been woven into the pattern of this book. But the two dominant themes in recent British history are the growth of social welfare and the expansion of science. Professional historians are still too reluctant to deal adequately with the impact of science on society. This book makes some attempt to redress the balance. What are the momentous forces which, in half a century, have revolutionised life in Britain as our grandparents knew it?
