tennantfamily (United Kingdom) (2009/03/19): Norman Ginsbury's English version of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, with photographic plates by John Vickers, of the original production of the play at the New Theatre, London. 1946 edition reprinted 1947. The play's greatness derives from the universality of its central figure. Peer's adventures are partly real and partly symbolic. It seems a symbolic pilgrimage that the reader undertakes with Peer Gynt from youth to old age, but it does not have the conventional happy ending. Bound inextricably to Grieg's music, the music has dated but the play remains modern and undated, whereas Grieg's music, though great, sometimes confuses the message of the play. Tyrone Guthrie determined that he would jettison the Grieg music should he stage the play again. The translation has no great poetic merit, but has clarity, accuracy, sympathy with the spirit as well as the literal sense of the original, and is unobtrusive, as a translation should aim to be.
