This is a thriller about vampire bats in the desert of Arizona, specifically the Hopi and Navajo reservations. It's surprisingly matter-of-fact about the bats, which are described in detail. Several of the characters are researchers who study bats, so there's no "Eek! Flappity wings!" scare element. I found the setting evocative. You can almost smell the desert wind, and the way the people talk and act has a "modern Western" feel to it.
