TRANSLATOR'S NOTE: Because Stendhal felt his style to be lacking in elegance, because he was never entirely satisfied with anything he had written and was continually adding phrases and emendations in an attempt to produce what his times thought of as polished prose, no two editions of LE ROUGE ET LE NOIR are exactly similar. This translation has been made from French text published be Editions de Cluny in 1937, which seems to include the majority of Stendhal's own marginal notes in the body of the text rather than as footnotes.
