Description: Product Description
Lavishly illustrated in b&w with historic photographs, and includes a few maps. "His strength of character, his drive and outstanding professional ability were the major factors in one of the most successful guerrilla campaigns ever waged." That was, and still is, the consensus of opinion on Germany's General Paul von Lettow Vorbeck, one of the few popular heroes to emerge from the First World War. When the war began, Lettow Vorbeck determined to do all in his power to disrupt the Allied war effort. In four years campaigning he avoided commitment to any major battle and by the end of the war had cost Britain dear in both men and materials. At the end of the war he surrendered undefeated, and as a measure of respect, his officers were allowed to retain their arms. This little known, four year campaign in which a small force tied down an army many times its size remains a classic example of what may be accomplished by guerilla warfare with well-led, disciplined troops. Introduction by Barrie Pitt. This is Ballantine's Illustrated History of the Violent Century, Campaign Book No. 20. Bibliography.
