Jodi Picoult is one of the few authors that I have read multiple titles from. Keeping Faith is the third novel I have read by her, and although it is hard to compete with My Sister's Keeper, I think it may be tied for my favorite. To be honest, I purchased this book because it was the cheapest of the Jodi Picoult books on the shelf in Borders. I was hesitant to buy it at first because I knew it was tied to the Christian faith, but I got it anyway. And I'm glad I did! Like the other novels I have read by Picoult, Keeping Faith was impossible to put down. I just had to find out what would happen next. Was Faith, a seven-year-old Jewish girl really seeing God? Would the vile Ian Fletcher, teleathiest, make a terrible spectacle of her life? I found myself caring so much for both Faith and her mother Mariah, even though they are fictional characters! Of course, not every book I read is perfect. In the last two Picoult novels I read (The Tenth Circle and My Sister's Keeper) I was so upset with the stories' endings that I vowed never to read another of her books again. This time around, it wasn't the ending that got to me, it was the middle. At some points, the story seemed to forget about the character for whom it is named. All of the other characters went on about Faith and her God, but God did not make an appearance for a huge chunk of the book. Perhaps this was intentional by the author, but leaving out God made Faith seem less credible. But I guess the question really is, was God truly speaking to Faith? We can never know for sure.
