Tessa Russo is the mother of two children and is married to a renowned pediatric surgeon, Nick. Despite having deep reservations, Tessa has finally chosen to leave her career to focus on her family and the pursuit of domestic happiness. From the outside, it appears she is destined to live a charmed life.
Valerie Anderson is an attorney and single mother of a six year old boy, Charlie, who has never known his father. After too many disappointments, Valerie has already forgotten how to love, or how to even be a friend, and believes that it is always safer not to have too many expectations in life. Although both women live in the same neighborhood in Boston, the truth is that they have very little in common, beyond a unconditional love for their children. But one night, a tragic accident causes the unimaginable: in an unfortunate fire, Charlie suffers serious facial burns. The relationship of empathy between Nick and Charlie ends including his mother, and what begins as a supportive relationship leads to a romance between Nick and Valerie. The feisty model representing Valerie is for Nick the opposite of what has become Tessa, who in turn will have to decide whether to keep fighting for the status quo or change.
With this novel, very well written from two points that alternate, Emily Giffin gives us a luminous story about two good people caught in situations that push them to their limits: the two will have to undergo a series of tests that could never have imagined, the two will have to rethink everything they believed in until then, the two will finally discover what is really important in life.
