Product Description
English Description:As a result of the empires centralistic structure, Byzantine historiography was mainly focussed on Constantinople and its hinterland, and sources for provincial history are relatively scarce. The Chronicle of Monembasia therefore is of much importance, informing us about Slavonic settlements in the Peloponnese and migratory movements of the former Greek inhabitants towards Southern Italy. The reliability of the contents has been questioned by some scholars. In addition to a philological analysis, parallel testimonies and complementary evidence, especially archaeological data, must be assembled in order to prove the Chronicles value, which underwent several applications in Byzantine times. Various items originate from Sicily, where Laconian refugees founded Demenna about 600, a settlement, which we encounter for centuries in the history of the island. During the Norman period Demenna developed into a territorial name for the north-eastern part of Sicily, Valdemone.
