The Orient pervades the whole of Eugene Fromentin's painted work and travel writings. Born at La Rochelle, he grew up contemplating the vanishing lines of the Atlantic horizon. This perspective prepared him to confront another great immensity which seemed to him like a colourless sea: the desert. Fromentin studied the Islamic world with discretion, accumulating extensive anthropological and linguistic pieces of information without necessarily using them in his work. His vision is of the atmosphere of places and surroundings rather than dramatic events.
