I Am Time is the story of a boy growing up in Britain and a girl who grows into a woman in South India. In different ways they both encounter violence; both face major crises. For Ben, it is the Suez debacle that presents him with a critical choice, while Meenakshi's life is troubled by more personal affairs. Ben's subsequent career affords him insights into the Cuba crisis and the dangers of the proliferation of nuclear weapons. In later life his work takes him to India, where he and Meena meet, fall in love, and enjoy years of happiness living alternately in India and England. The mysterious nature of time and the fleeting appearances of Kala throughout the book, invite comparisons between Eastern and Western concepts; and beneath a cloud of nuclear threats, the question of whether the world will end with a bang or a whimper continues to puzzle Ben and Meena . Peter D Bishop has written many books, including studies of Gandhian non-violence and of inter-faith dialogue. This is his first novel.
