Reviews: chris (Japan) (2013/09/28):
I read this book as a boy over 50 years ago; what a delight to revisit it! " A rousing tale" the cliche goes, but here it fits. There is a clean sense of honor, integrity, simplicity and wholeness shining through the adventure. Yes, and an unselfconscious racism too, so overt and naive that I forgive it in a moment.
We will never be that young again, fighting the Last Great War.

It is 1914, and Richard Hannay returns to his London flat one evening to find himself caught up in a desperate fight against a global conspiracy.

A spy is being hunted. An assassination is planned. The net is closing in and if the conspirators get their way, Europe will soon be at war, and Britain will soon be defenceless.

Hannay is the only one who can help -- and any minute they will be coming for him too.

+ + +

John Buchan's The 39 Steps is considered the first modern thriller and remains as unputdownable as when it was first published. A compelling tale of intrigue and espionage, with some of the most evocative chase scenes in English literature, it has been lauded by generations of readers and writers.
