This is the evolving story of the armed forces and security organizations of Russia and her 14 former partners in the Soviet Union, with the emphasis on events and personalities, and how these impinge on the structure and politics of the individual states. It shows above all their deep influence throughout the life and politics of a vast and still developing area. Volume one covers the Commonwealth of Independent States and, in a major section, the evolution of the Russian High Command and the Armed and Security Forces since the late 1980s.
