Although South Africa has long been a focus on intense international interest, few authors have written about its political institutions. An understandable preoccupaton with the politics of apartheid has discouraged researchers from investigating the country's political system - including the vital office of the head of government. This book has been designed to analyze the office of Prime Minister/President in an historical perspective. Since 1948 there have been only six incumbents - Malan, Strijdom, Verwoerd, Vorster, Botha and currently De Klerk. The approach of each leader to key issues such as race relations, foreign policy and interest groups is examined and compared, as are the ways in which they have influenced the nature of the office and, more broadly, how South African politics itself has changed since 1948. Key themes are developed that trace the rise and fall of the apartheid philosophy and the evolution of Afrikaner identity and interests within the broader political-economic context.
