Amazon Review
Louise Hay's most famous book You Can Heal Your Life about how she cured herself of "incurable" cancer through positive thinking not surprisingly spawned a one-woman industry telling others they could do the same. Hay has published 20 books, recorded numerous audio tapes and now also promotes her self-styled way of healing through video. With such a strong emphasis on her personal story, it is hardly surprising that Hay receives thousands of letters from grateful readers. This book is a collection of just some of these letters. Broken down into 20 subjects like grief, abuse and phobias, each letter has a personal reply full of Hay's homespun philosophy about affirmations and visualisation, thereby encouraging reader identification so popular with agony columns. While it is easy to scoff at Hay's approach, especially her assertion that we subconsciously "choose" our diseases and when we're going to die, medical science does in fact recognise the link between physical health and mental thoughts. Psychoneurological immunology is devoted to finding more ways to boost healing through positive thinking. The problem with going too far down this route is that those who don't recover can feel like failures for not trying hard enough. Medical science may have its limits but so does this approach. That said, fans of Hay will love this book. --Laura Marcus
