Disciplines or subjects are the basic components in human knowledge system. They are also the inevitable result of the development and specialization of knowledge system as well as the essential foundation of modern education and scientific research. This book demonstrates the relationship between the development of disciplines and emerging strategic industries. It puts forward several vital suggestions and comments concerning the continuity, coordination and healthy progress in the future of the development of disciplines and fundamental research in China.
This book consists of two parts. Part I is General Analysis of Development Strategy of Disciplines in China, 2011-2020 , composed of six chapters.
The First Chapter points out the fundamental significance of launching research into disciplines in promoting science and technology in China for its healthy development and in advancing the capability of scientific and technological innovation. This chapter also introduces the project Disciplines Development Strategy Research in China, 2011-2020 which has been carried out by the Academic Divisions of Chinese Academy of Sciences together with National Natural Science Foundation of China since 2009. This project is composed of nineteen research groups.
The Second Chapter systematically reviews the historical development of disciplines. It reveals the revolutionary effect of science on the progress of human civilization and explains the emerging trend of inter-discipline and integration. Furthermore, using cases from the history of science, it illustrates the development of a discipline in four periods: the initial period of innovation, innovation-intensive period, improvement and diffusion period, and a new cycle of development.
Chapter Three examines the overall trends in the development of disciplines and the current development stages of nineteen disciplines. It is believed that major breakthroughs in basic disciplines will drive major changes in the system of disciplines.
Chapter Four explains the relationship between emerging strategic industries and the development of disciplines from a historical view. It shows that the process is shortening from a major scientific breakthrough to a significant technological innovation to the rise of emerging strategic industries. Thus, it suggests a three part plan: first, give priority to disciplines related to emerging strategic industries that are determined by the national 12th Five-Year Plan ; second, focus on those relevant disciplines that may give birth to the emerging strategic industries in the next ten years or so; third, promote in advance those fundamental and leading disciplines related to the fulfillment of China s modernization.
In Chapter Five, it is estimated that in today s world, science and technology are at the eve of revolutionary change . In order to seize this opportunity we must fully prepare the foundation of disciplines by balancing and coordinating development among disciplines; improving creativity and strategic thinking; encouraging the use of new concepts, new methods and new instruments; and vigorously carrying forward the spirit of science and transmitting scientific culture in our society.
In Chapter Six, it is realized that in China's current situation there are several serious problems existing in the development of disciplines. The development of disciplines in China has to obey the guiding principle of solid foundation, coordinated development, prospective layout and key breakthrough . The chapter puts forward several political suggestions to accelerate the development of disciplines.
Part II is extended reading. It is made up of 32 relevant items that enrich the knowledge base and further explain the content of Part I.
