The Palace of Eternal Youth Tang Dynasty Emperor Li Longji is besotted with his imperial concubine, the beautiful Yang Yuhuan. Though the emperor has over 3,000 beauties installed in his court in Chang'an, his eyes are only on Yuhuan, and he spends all his days and nights with her. Yuhuan, on the other hand, does her utmost to please the emperor with her graceful dances and enchanting songs. As the emperor becomes more and more captivated with Yuhuan, he starts to neglect the affairs of the state. He makes a grave error by promoting the evil and ambitious general An Lushan, who then plots to overthrow the emperor. When An's rebels finally seize the capital, Li Longji and Yuhuan have no choice but to flee. On the road to exile, tragedy strikes again when the mutinous soldiers demand the death of Yuhuan, accusing her of being a traitor. Can the royal lovers keep their pledge of love to one another or will she be sacrificed to save the kingdom? The Peony Pavilion During the Song Dynasty, an exquisite beauty named Du Liniang yearns to escape the confines of her wealthy, but restricted life. Not even allowed to step outside her house, Du Liniang fills her time studying the classics and daydreaming. One day, Du Liniang decides to explore the forbidden area of the fragrant garden behind her house with her maid, Chunxiang. There, under the intoxicating scent of the plum blossoms, she falls asleep and begins to dream. In her dream, a handsome young scholar, Liu Mengmei, comes to her, and declares his love for her. They immediately consummate their love in blissful ecstasy. However, Du Liniang wakes up to find that it had only been a dream and that she cannot find Liu Mengmei or a trace of him anywhere. Heart-broken, Du Liniang falls ill and dies before the winter. Three years later, a poor scholar named Liu Mengmei passes by the very same garden and finds himself magically drawn to the place. Will he discover the beauty from his dream again? Will Heaven let Du Liniang return to life to reunite with her lover? The Peach Blossom Fan Set against the backdrop of the downfall of the Chongzhen Emperor, Zhu Yousong of the Ming Dynasty, this celebrated tale tells the story of Hou Chaozong, a poor, but righteous scholar living in Nanjing, who protests against the corruption of the court. Chaozong falls prey to the scheme of a corrupt official who tries to buy his loyalty by introducing him to beautiful courtesan, Li Xiangjun. Enamored of her beauty and her mastery of the operatic repertoire, Chaozong agrees to marry her, only to find himself indebted to the official for the price of her dowry. Xiangjun, however, is indignant when she discovers the scheme, and demonstrates her loyalty to Chaozong by rejecting the dowry and pledging her devotion to him despite his poverty. The two lovers then must fight to keep their love alive in the face of hardship and chaos as the Manchus take over Beijing, and march onward to Nanjing.
