Reviews: Lynn Herron (United Kingdom) (2011/05/15):
Chronologically this is one of the earlier murder stories featuring Hannah Swenson owner of The Cookie Jar cafe and amateur detective. Like the other books featuring Hannah Swenson it contains several recipes with detailed instructions for cookies and desserts and the cookery theme is constantly interwoven with the story especially as the action in this book centres around Hannah being head judge in the Hartland Dessert Bake-Off.

I've enjoyed all the books I've read in this series though I find them quite variable in standard. This to me was one of the really good ones with plenty of action and enough twists in the plot that it isn't obvious 'who done it' until near the end. I find these books a great read for when you're tired and want something to enjoy with your feet up! They are also, despite the dead bodies that Hannah has the unfortunate habit of coming across, very positive in tone. Joanne Fluke's books are full of interesting characters who may have quirks but who are basically nice helpful folk with just the odd murderer thrown in by way of variety. Fluke is a clever enough writer to get you to suspend disbelief and accept that Lake Eden is pretty much crime and vandalism free, it just tends purely by chance to have a remarkable number of murders!
