In Michaels’ new Sisterhood novel, the ladies are, once again, sequestered at their Spanish retreat, and dissension is the rule of the day. The women are realizing just how limited they are in their movements and what it truly means to be in exile as they begin to turn on each other. In the meantime, the second string of their ever-expanding group has got a case to work on. Pearl Barnes, a Supreme Court justice, is being blackmailed by her former son-in-law, who threatens to expose her involvement in an underground railroad for abused women if she doesn’t hand over a large amount of cash and rule a certain way in an upcoming Supreme Court decision. The ladies in Spain are needed, and, thanks to their mentor Charles Martin and his connections, their return to the U.S. is handled most creatively: the ladies are to pose as a rock group, the G-String Girls.
