Description: Product Description
Eddie starts stealing cars long before he's old enough to get a license, driven by a force so compelling that he never questions, just obeys. After a series of false starts, interrupted by stays in juvenile institutions and a state prison term, Eddie's skills and loyalty attract the attention of J.C., a near-legendary hijacker. When he gets out, Eddie becomes the driver for J.C.'s ultra-professional crew. J.C., the master planner, is finally ready to pull off that one huge job every con dreams of ... the Retirement Score. But some roads have twists even a professional getaway man couldn't foresee ...

Andrew Vachss, a writer widely acclaimed for breathing new life and death into the crime genre, here presents a classic noir tale, relentlessly displaying and dissecting not guilt, but innocence.
Reviews: Hope (United Kingdom) (2007/11/25):
This book is just right; the only reason I am putting it up on BookMooch is that I'm not sure a second reading would compare very well with a first reading.

Everything about this book feels right - the tone, the language, the length of the story, the spare prose, the typeface, the cover design, the characters. The story is super, and we're told it from Eddie's point of view, so we don't find out more than he knows or can find out. Eddie has an innocence about him, and so he tells us only so much, and is quite a likeable character. It's nice to read a book where there is plenty left for the imagination of the reader to fill in if he/she choses; where the book contains enough material (not too little, or too much). The plot has plenty of twists and turns. This book rewards patience and does not deserve to be rushed, even though it is quite short. There are times of action, and times of waiting and preparing for action, and the writing seems to reflect that. Eddie loves driving first, and cars second, and adores his 1955 Thunderbird. He is really dedicated. This permeates the whole book. This book/story is really well written, and I shall have to make a note to look out for other books by this author.
