Sometimes this book lacks the narrative power I hoped for in the first half, but it really draws you in at certain parts. I guess this may also be where I am personally in my process. Some things were a surprise to see mirrored back, such as "When are you going to hate me?" I think for a survivor that expectation in an intimate relationship might sound odd, but it is natural after having pain and love fused together from one's primary caregivers, whether through abuse, neglect, or abuse and the other parent failing to protect one. It is not really a book for outsiders in terms of explaining the subject to them as much as some other books (i.e. "Allies in Healing" and so forth), it is really more for survivors and written from the survivor perspective. If you are a survivor OR well educated on abuse (or both) and want a personal narrative, this is a good book for that reason. Again, not the most powerful narrative I've read at times (and there were a few noted typos in the manuscript, just as a side-bar on the editing process), maybe due to lackluster editing on the publisher's end in terms of helping the author shape the book, but definitely worth a read. Especially if you are still struggling with particular issues, such as not being able to say "no" (I'm over that one!) and feeling a lot of shame/guilt when you do, food issues, etc.
