Description: Product Description
In this historical account the author describes her research and investigation of the 1937 -1938 extermination, torture, and rape of the Chinese people of Nanking China by the Japanese army. Devoting 2 years of study and preparation for writing the book she traveled to Nanking (Nanjing) to conduct interviews and to search for and examine documents and photos of the atrocities. In her travels she found 2 diaries providing details and observations of the massacre. Chang's book contains many photos and descriptions of these events, the tortures inflicted, mutilations and rapes of Chinese women and men. Estimates of 200,000 - 430,000 deaths have appeared in various publications. The Rape of Nanking received many accolades as a compelling book bringing to light these atrocities. It rose to the New York Times' Best Seller list, remaining there for 10 weeks. Iris Chang became a nationally known speaker educating her audiences and was named the National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese Americans. The horrific nature of the content she had researched and the rigors of re-living these events, these images in the photos led to ever increasing levels of depression for Chang. Her compassion and empathy for those killed and those tortured took hold of Chang's daily life as she maintained the devotion to telling the truths she had discovered. In Nov. 2004, her sadness and depression could no longer be borne. Iris Chang took her own life.
