He represented his town at cross-country, athletics and football, his school at bridge and chess, also getting prizes for his writing. He first encountered orienteering whilst at university, where he was also chess champion once. He emigrated to Germany in 1975 and was spellbound by the forests, making a dozen maps and helping the famous Uslar club to numerous national orienteering titles as coach and competitor. He coached the German national team for 4 years, successfully controlled 3 international events and began writing sports articles, short stories and books on orienteering. He holds coaching qualifications for soccer, middle-distance running and orienteering.
