Description: Product Description
Volume 1 (pp. 1-534) includes nine papers under the heading "Archeology' five under "Migration and Nomadism," and twelve under "Linguistics' of which the contributions by Eric P. Hamp ("Who Were the Tocharians? Linguistic Subgrouping and Diagnostic Idiosyncrasy," pp. 307-46), Werner Winter ("Lexical Archaisms in the Tocharian Languages," pp. 347-57), Georges-Jean Pinault ("Tokharian Languages and Pre-Buddhist Culture," pp. 358-71), Douglas Q. Adams ("On the History and Significance of Some Tocharian B Agricultural Terms," pp. 372-78), Alexander Lubotsky ("Tocharian Loan Words in Old Chinese: Chariots, Chariot Gear, and Town Building," pp. 379-909), and Lin Meicun ("Qilian and Kunlun: The Earliest Tokharian Loan-words in Ancient Chinese," pp. 476-82), all in the latter section, were of most interest to this reviewer. Volume 2 (pp. 535-899) is more topically various, containing three papers under the heading "Genetics and Physical Anthropology," four under "Metallurgy," two under "Textiles," two under "Geograp hy and Climatology," two under "History," and three under "Mythology and Ethnology." Of these the contributions by Emma C. Bunker ("Cultural Diversity in the Tarim Basin Vicinity and Its Impact on Ancient Chinese Culture," pp. 604-18), Denis Sinor ("The Myth of Languages and the Language of Myth' pp. 729-45), Chen Chien-wen ("Further Studies on the Racial, Cultural, and Ethnic Affinities of the Yuezhi," pp. 767-84), and Dolkun Kamberi ("Discovery of the Taklimakanian Civilizations during a Century of Tarim Archeological Exploration [ca. 1866- 1996]," pp. 785-8 11) are of particular note. A useful appendix of "Place, People, and Site Names of the Uyghur Region, Pertinent to the Archeology of the Bronze Age and Iron Age" (pp. 857-64), organized according to Pinyin romanization, plus a helpful and very thorough index to both volumes (pp. 867-99) rounds things out.
