J. K. Lasser's SUCCESSFUL TAX PLANNING FOR REAL ESTATE describes the effect of federal income taxes on real estate investments. It is not intended to provide the key that unlocks the secret of making profits. It offers no "get rich quick" schemes. Profits on real estate are made through successful investments. This book assumes you already know the real estate field. If you do not, all tax knowledge gained by reading this book, or indeed any similar book, will not help you become a successful real estate investor. What then is the purpose of this book? It tells you how to anticipate your tax cost in certain operations, and how you may reduce that cost within the structure of the law. We have attempted to define the tax consequences of various real estate operations and to outline the steps to meet, reduce or, where possible, avoid these tax consequences. Whenever possible, the discussion is simplified to avoid introducing technical and legal details. We hope we have succeeded, although technical details is at times unavoidable. In some ares, we have sketched the overall pattern of a problem in order to give the essentials of the subject. In doing this, we have sacrificed certain fine distinctions which, in our opinion, have their place only in a technical tax book for experienced practitioners.
