In 1978, the discovery of an unexpectedly blonde mummy in storage at a research facility in the University of California at Berkeley sets off a series of events that draw in Lily West, a young woman archaeologist. West has recently returned to Berkeley from Afghanistan, where she had been researching the routes of Alexander the Great. While she was still in Afghanistan, Lily had been attacked after receiving the diary of another young woman anthropologist who had since disappeared. In Berkeley, the attacks continue as she assists Harry Evans, a homicide detective with the Berkeley Police Department, try to identify the mummy. At the same time, she begins a romance with Tony Clarke, a handsome professor with a penchant for dressing like a cowboy, who also happens to be her thesis advisor. When two more murders occur, Lily realizes it is only a matter of time before she is next, unless she and Harry can catch the killer first.
