Reviews: Cathleen (USA: PA) (2007/01/03):
This is a fabulous "coloring book" of considerable sophistication. There are 60 line-drawing replicas of painting masterpieces by Audubon, Blake, Hieronymos Bosch, Botticelli, Bruegel, Cassatt, Cezanne, Chagall, Chardin, Charpentier, Daumier, David, Da Vinci, Degas, Delacroix, Della Francesca, Duchamp, Durer, El Greco, Gainsborough, Gauguin, Goya, Hals, Hogarth, Holbein, Ingres, Manet, Monet, Modigliani, Morisot, Munch, Raphael, Rembrandt, Renoir, Rossetti, Henri Rousseau, Rubens, Seurat, Gilbert Stuart, Titian, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Eyck, Van Gogh, Van Rijn, Velasquez, Vermeer, and Whistler. On the facing page of each is a brief biography of the artist as well as a short discussion of the qualities of the painting on which the line-drawing is based.

This book will attract and interest children who are almost too old for conventional coloring books as well as young teens with an interest in art. One of the suggested uses is to vary the colors from those of the artist's in order to develop a sense of why the artist had made the color choices he or she had, and to be able to get an idea of how varying shades would have a significant impact on the work even if the overall line composition remained the same. In any case, many children simply enjoy "improving" on the originals!
