This book has arisen from a course of lectures delivered in 1963 under a lectureship established at Balliol College by the will of Sir Francis Fremantle. The lecturers were required to discuss the relation of science to Christianity and the Christian life in essence or in its various applications, with particular reference to education or to the sympathetic explanation of differences between disciplines and different religious communities.
