When I first offered HIS 301-302: ANCIENT NEAR EAST at VCU, I found If having to use a great deal of valuable classtime writing every new word on the board and explaining even the simplest of meanings. With this publication, my students should be able to follow me with greater ease and even to anticipate what I am going to say. It should also help those who come to class and feel ill-at-ease because their former education had not included a study of this early period in history. It is not very difficult to relate to the Middle Ages, to English history, to modern European and American history, because a previous education has provided background. But what student has heard the names and studied the accomplishments of Layard and Rawlinson, of Breasted and Petrie, of Asshurbanipal and Nabonidus? It is because so many of my students come to this class completely unprepared for any "real history" prior to the Greek period, that I have prepared this guide. I want them to learn those things which are necessary for a better understanding of the events and experiences following the period of the Greeks.
Most books which deal with the ancient Near East today are, either out-of-date in their choice of words, or, take too much for granted on the background of the reader. I find the latter to be true even for the excellent Cambridge Ancient History. My students have found it very difficult to understand what an author is driving at when they are not even aware that a historical problem exists. Explain the problem to them and its background, and the sources become alive.
There is no question but that the specialists who are adept in the handling of the cuneiform and hieroglyphic scripts must continue their deciphering and translation work. Someone needs to collect and correlate their findings in a work that meets the needs of the undergraduate. This work is meant to be a step in that direction.
