Description: Product Description
A gripping personal account of the Spanish Civil War, this memoir is also the story of a man rediscovering his roots. The author's parents were separated in the confusion of the war and his mother was eventually executed by the fascist authorities in her hometown of Zamora when the author was just a small child. Sender Barayon was reared by foster parents in the United States and was not to return to Spain for another four decades.

The death of his mother, Amparo, was cloaked in mystery, deepened by his father's refusal to disclose any information about her. In a quest for self-affirmation, Sender Barayon, at the age of 46, defied his father and traveled to Spain to retrace the events leading to his mother's death. In so doing, he finally made his peace with the past.

'A Death in Zamora' has the drama and tension of a good mystery...and it is all the more engrossing because the events it recounts are so shameful and so true. In addition to the personal tragedy of Sender Barayon's family, we learn firsthand of the dreadful suffering of other Spanish civilians at the hands of the fascists and gain a picture of the war more poignant and real than that provided by more conventional histories.
