Pam A. (USA: IL) (2010/02/01): I liked this book, but it wasn't until about half way through reading it that I realized it. If you have no previous experience with invented alien cultures, this book is difficult to grasp at first. Vinge immediately dives into the story of the 'tines', but doesn't explain their existence until mid-book or so. Then, if you read as I do, you have to go back to the beginning of the book and try to decode a lot of the first few chapters. Peregrine, Flenser, Scriber... these are dog-like animals. They live in packs, but one pack constitutes an entire being. They think as one and, if separated, do not function as intelligent beings. They communicate telepathically, and ultrasonically, and refer to themselves as people. With this info in hand, I hope you have a better time with this novel than I did at first.
